Colorado native here. I grew up fishing for Brookies and stocked Rainbow Trout in small streams below the Long's Peak massif between Allenspark and Estes Park. That was nearly seventy years ago. It warms this ol' man's heart to watch a newcomer land his first trout. Thank you for sharing!

Fishing is for me as it is for a lot of people. It serves as an escape from life's tensions and complications. Fishing is a wonderful way of putting your body and mind back into a better healthier place. It's so very important to never get hung up on the numbers you put in the net as it is the quality of time you allow yourself on the water. I enjoy watching your videos Jessie. Foremost, your open to sharing where it is your Fishing. Thats not a common thing in Maine videos. I am new to this beautiful state and it's waters. I am learning to fish all over again being here. Caught my fist few salmon in GLS late season this year. Like every new water there are basics and learning moments. Keep up the great work on your videos. Always consider yourself blessed for the time you get on the waters!

Great video. The only thing that beats your first fish on the fly is watching a friend land his/her first fish on the fly with your assistance. What your friend, Jeremy, stated at the recap is what it is all about - learning and being able to pass it along. Exposing our son to different fishing approaches and water types has been a priority of mine, though at 4 y/o he's too young to handle the rod on his own. After watching a few of your videos, I appreciate your inclusion of proper handling of fish (hands wet, keeping them in water when possible). At times the accounts with large follower counts either don't know how to handle fish or don't demonstrate how to handle them. Thank you for being a steward of the resource. Well done.

Thanks for the kind words! I try my best to handle them with care especially when filming. Takes some extra time to make sure everything is ready prior to catching the fish. it can get annoying at times but i owe at least that to the fish I catch.

This is actually a really amazing video. Not only is there instructions for fly fishing but there is no better way to explain fly fishing than having someone new describe the experience and he nailed down everything I experienced when I switched over. It’s immersive, you’re fully invested into the fish, what they’re eating, their life cycles, the bugs and hatches, you’re reading water. You’re solving this riddle to get the fish you’re after, not just hucking stuff out there and hoping to pull fish in. And of course, there is nothing better than dry fly fishing. Great stuff man!

Thanks! I put a lot of time into this one! It helped to have Jeremy's awesome footage to use. it was great to capture his first casts to actuality landing a fish! Great day on the water and he definitely understands what fly fishing is all about!

So nice to see someone starting fly fishing and getting the «picure» french word for the bite at it. Jeremy, now your tie like a flie on a hook for the rest of your life and will have to plan a budget for some equipment. Enjoy and the idea you share with Jessy for your kid is a great one dad. Memories to built and share later when they are grown man and women and you a old man.

Great video and it looked like you guys had a lot of fun. The tug is the drug! Feeling that take and fight of the fish on a fly rod is addictive. You're a really good teacher and would like to see more instructional videos.

Thanks we had a blast out there that trip. I'll definitely try to put up some more instructional content. I get asked a lot for it and thought this would be a great opportunity

That's cool. Dude got his 1st and in your video! Looks nice up there. Old navy buds and I just got back from couple week in Cherokee nation fishing/fly-fishing for trout. we caught couple hundred, rivers stocked big time Fish where everywhere, got browns and rainbows ! Caught a ton glueing live crickets to hook with UV glue! Float them out in front of the fish! haven't fly fish in fresh water in 40 years. Oh, and we all got Covid D from freaking train ride! HA

Jess Nice idea of teaching him, you could always do that for a charge also, to help support the channel, but great video man keep up the great work.

He would need a guides licence to charge for anything like that.

GREAT video! I was self-taught (poorly) on fly fishing and my wife recently expressed interest in learning and doing it together, which really got me back in to it. She had such a frustrating beginning learning the basics and it all went away after landing her first trout.

Have you targeted any striped bass on the fly this year? I heard Maine had a pretty excellent striper season.
@whitepineoutdoors23623 жыл бұрын
Tube fishing for striper has been killing it for the past couple years. I haven’t tried fly fishing but you probably could get some decent ones that way.
@FlyTyer19483 жыл бұрын
Congratulations to you both. For your next new fly fishers, maybe take them out to a beach or sport field to show basic casting & line handling? Credit here to you both for patience & persistence.

Thanks glad you enjoyed it! definitely a fun memorable day on the water! I do that occasionally, however, I dont want the new fly fisher to get board is what I've found with others. So i just take them to a spot like this where there is nothing in the backcast and no snags in the water. If they lose a few its alright, at least they got to get some hand on experience. often I bring them for an easier species like perch or chubs so they get more practice fighting a fish. Jeremy refused this idea and said head rather not catch one unless his first was a trout or salmon 😂
@FlyTyer19483 жыл бұрын
@@MainelyOutDoors I take your point. In some ways, it’s too bad he didn’t take you up on going for chubs, they are easier to hook & put up a remarkably good fight. Of course in McClain’s fishing encyclopedia, their edibility was described as being like eating “cotton stuffed with needles.” ;-)
@MainelyOutDoors3 жыл бұрын
@@FlyTyer1948 Well I had a friend in college that use to take them home after electro shocking. Sift them through a fine strainer to make fish cakes. I have to say it was alright, with some proper spicing anyway.

Are trout available for fly fishing in Maine in mid August? I was told it’s too warm that time of year.
@NikkiNife3 жыл бұрын
You can fish trout year round here on the fly. August is a great time in midcoast
@MainelyOutDoors3 жыл бұрын
most places will be too warm for trout and salmon. if you want to go just be mind full of the water temp if its above 68 its very hard on the trout. You can find spots where the water will be lower especially blue lining
