Ionization-type smoke detectors that contain Americium are now not recommended, newer photoelectric smoke alarms are now preferred. Not because the ionization type are radioactive, but because they are slow to detect smoke from a smouldering fire, but quick to detect burnt toast. Photoelectric smoke alarms are better, but connected, mains-wired with built-in battery backup are the best option.

Over here in Scotland they changed the law so every house needs an interlinked heat, smoke and co2 alarm. If one goes off, they all go off! It's a fkin' nightmare!😂

Sounds EXPENSIVE. I guess they like it that way. Make it more expensive so more people find it harder to comply with the law. Genius. Leave it to the EU/UK.

@@TheGuitologist Yep, I bought and installed them myself, and it cost around £100/$130, which wasn't too bad. But I only own a small two-bed property. I can only imagine the number of house-rich, cash-poor elderly folks and single women who got fleeced by unscrupulous tradesmen installing this BS. I'm no conspiracy theorist, but I reckon the change in law-requiring an interlinked system-was a form of disguised regulatory overreach, designed specifically under the guise of safety to stop people from smoking cigarettes or weed in rental properties. I wouldn't put it past them, as a bunch of MSPs and MPs are landlords. Outside their government day jobs, most of these people earn all their money from dodgy property portfolios.

The IC is a high gain elevtrometer with a few other functions. If you use an ion chamber instead of the comparison gigohm resistor, and put the resistor across the sense elements you could turn the detector into a high range radiation detector. ❤

electrometer? A JFET-input opamp or a CMOS input digital are also very high resistance but you'd need a special geiger-muller tube and high voltage supply to make a rad counter, I'm not aware of any simpler methods
@christopherleubner66332 ай бұрын
Amercium is made into the oxide that is mixed with gold as a binder. This is then made into foil that is bonded to pure silver or nickel foil. It is then pressed to make a thin layer of americium and gold over the foil and dots are punched from the strip and pressed into stainless steel source holders like the one inside your detector. The older pyratronics ones heve the source rather poorly mounted inside that are physically and radoiologically stronger. These also have a very sensitive thyratron tube inside that triggers at nanoampres.😮

The switch had a plastic retainer that enables the alarm when removed. Used to prevent the batteries from being used while in the box.❤

It's not waste if there's a use for it! If you look up cloud chamber videos you'll see that these sealed sources are directional and alpha particles are stopped by a few inches of air. So there's no health risk unless you start collecting hundreds of them and emptying the contents.

The alarms detect particulates in the that are indicative of smoke from a fire. Dust settling on the interior can trigger an alarm. My alarms did this in my new house as the drywall crew left a lot of dust around any openings. Important to note that they will detect condensation and temperature changes as well. Leaving a window or door open in winter near a detector can cause a false alarm.

I put a new battery in one from 2010 and it made a puff of smoke so I took it apart, mine uses a led to sense smoke. The reason for the puff of smoke was the battery tab on the board broke and shorted out. After re soldering it works and I keep setting it off with flux when cleaning my iron. 🤣

Lithium primary cells are not rechargeable. The two terminals on the piezo are for either self oscillation feedback, so the oscillator always resonates at its highest volume resonant frequency (like a quartz crystal) or maybe for a low and high volume option.

Let me just say this. Find a mechanical heat detector. They are avail. Portable , and 100 times more reliable. They work with a temp sensitive solder that works just like a fire sprinkler head. It has a wind up spring that’s held under tension with the solder . When the solder melts it releases the spring which moves clappers that hit the outer casing ringing it like a bell at 90db. 90% of the time they actually survive the fire. And people have recovered them , reset them with a new solder lock and wind the spring back like a clock. Simple genius design. Why heat , and not smoke ? Because it’s been found that about 30-45% of smoke detectors fail due to poor maintenance , dirty ion detector. Or excessively thick smoke that covers the ion particles 10:1 making it impossible for the detector to sense the ions in the smoke. Especially with foam in modern furniture. Which produces a cyanide gas .. that’s why they no longer tell you to crawl as close to the ground as possible. But instead to keep your head around doorknob level. Cyanide gas stays about a foot off the floor. Sorry for such a long comment Brad. But you and your family are worth it !!! ✌️brother.
