When I worked for Walmart as a teenager, a few women who worked at the customer service desk would meet their friends/family members in the receiving area behind the store, load up TV’s in their cars. Then return old ones for money. This was back when the big “boob tube” TV’s were still around. I opened a box one day and found cinder blocks in it. I wouldn’t return it, so the ladies at the customer service desk got mad. Long story short, two of them were arrested, and a few others quit before they were fired or arrested.

This happened with me and my mom at Walmart. Except I kept going up the chain of command not taking "no refund" as the answer. We got our money back after 30 minutes. The serial numbers were different on the tv and the box. Once I mentioned Walmart was basically committing fraud by selling these tv's like this, we got our money back. My mom was not going to be out her money because their employees or supplier is stealing tv's. They knew what was going on. I made them check another tv to see if this certain brand were all like that, and I was right.

I bought a coffee maker from Walgreen's Drugstore probably close to twenty years ago. My old one died and I NEED my coffee in the morning. I bought it off the shelf and brought it home and went to open it up and clean it up for use the next morning, and to my surprise ...... there was a used coffee filter and coffee grounds in it. The first thing I noticed while unpacking it, obviously, was that the white coffee maker wasn't all that "white" or clean, and then it was obvious that this was used and simply returned to the store and the people at the store literally just took the re taped up box and put it back on the shelf. I immediately brought it back and asked for a manager, and this younger guy walked up to me and I explained everything to him, and opened the box and he saw everything. He literally, and I'm not exaggerating one iota here, said nothing but his mouth was just hanging open. He just stared at it, and finally I said "Should I just go grab another one off the shelf"? because after fifteen seconds of this dude saying nothing and literally with his mouth gaping open, I figured ONE of us had to say something, and he just nodded. THIS, ladies and gentlemen, is how America's stores are being run and managed, and again, THIS was probably in 2002, and it "ain't" getting any better. This is 100% on the store and on their people who work in or run the returns department. I'm shocked that Walmart, after seeing the OBVIOUS scam here, wouldn't take the television back without a hassle. Just one reason out of probably 30 (the clientele being on the TOP of the list), that I have not stepped foot in a Walmart in decades and never, ever will again.

So, I know the process Walmart does for TVs. They are supposed to be testing every TV that comes back, even if it's not been opened. If the TV works, matches everything on the box, and has a remote and power cable, they'll resell it as an open box with a decent discount. If it won't turn on, or is missing the cable and/or remote, they'll send it back to the manufacturer. That is supposed to be what happens. Not sure who was too lazy to test the TV at that Walmart, but that is the official policy. Source: I have worked there.

Welcome to retail. I worked for years in it and there was always somebody trying to pull something on returns. We sold TVs too and there was a crime ring that was buying them and removing the TV and then they would put a log it the box that weighed the same and then very carefully retape the box to the point you couldn’t tell it had ever been opened. It worked well, you would have to flip the box upside down to tell anything was off, and no one does that. We generally found out we’d been hit when we got the angry call from a customer that bought one. We also had the same thing with bricks and the early $1000 camcorders.

This what happens when you have people clearly not doing their job with returns. How ridiculous is it that somebody could buy a brand new TV, go to a dumpster and find one that is the same size and put it in the box and keep the new tv and then get your money back? I needed a jump box to keep in my car so I got one from Walmart. 80 bucks or so. When I opened the shrink wrapped box, the jump box looked like it had spent the last ten years in a mechanic’s shop. It even had initials written in permanent marker on the body. Charging port was broken and cables were missing. They took it back and I grabbed another one off the shelf.

People do this a lot. I worked at Lowe's somes years back and saw it all the time. People would buy something and bring their old item back to the store in the new box and get a refund. The trick is that they bring it back during a busy time of day so that the clerks would be less likely to check inside the box, especially if it made to look like it had never been opened.

These are not uncommon occurrences, someone sees a 50" tv in a dumpster and immediately knows to go to wal mart and buy a 50" tv knowing they can box up the trash tv and return it, all they have to do is repackage it convincingly enough. all they really are doing is screwing another customer. things like youtube teach people how to act like this and exactly what to do. companies need to be more proactive and even charge these people with the crimes they are committing.

A lot of the problems with today's returns are that items are rarely inspected, and if they are- it's by unknowledgeable people. Items are then simply returned to the floor for resale- regardless if they have been inspected or not. Items returned used to be either sent back to manufacturer or discarded.

I recently ordered a laptop from Sam's Club (Walmart) and when I received it I could tell it the box was light and that it had been shipped from a different distribution center than my tracking info told me, so something was up. I opened the box and inside were mop heads. I first called Sam's Club for assistance and they said I had to file a theft report with police because it was over $1000. I thought that's BS and hung up, called back again, got a different rep and they immediately said they'd send a new one because they value their club members. I shouldn't have to file a theft report with the police and have my insurance cover it just because someone at their distribution center stole my item. But they made it right. One thing nobody here seems to know including the Reporter is Walmart allows 3rd party sellers similar to Ebay. That is why they didn't accept the return. It didn't come from their warehouse.
@kevin_mitchell6 ай бұрын
Good griefI One would assume if you're buying from a retailer, especially a large one such as Walmart, online or otherwise, you are buying directly from that retailer and therefore subject to consumer protection laws that can't implement a policy of no returns for defective or not-fit-for-use products. (This assumes the US has such laws) If Walmart or any retailer are allowing 3rd party sellers in-store or online, then it should be made very obvious to the customer whether they are buying directly from the retailer or from a third party seller. Their site overall should also clearly include the fact that they facilitate 3rd party sellers which aren't necessarily subject to consumer protection laws and therefore aren't guaranteed a return policy. no matter how unfit for purpose the product may be. If they aren't, then evidently consumer protection laws haven't kept pace and should be rectified.
