A personal look at one of history's SuperFights which exceeded expectations. Sad that almost nothing these days comes close.

Vintage commentary and analysis. I remember that fight very clearly. Wanted Pryor to win. But I think people missed the subtle point you made-about Panama Lewis asking for the bottle, i.e., the one containing the ‘concoction’ (my word), he had mixed. Not to take anything away from Pryor. But Fight fans should be aware, if I remember correctly (and I think I do)that Panama Lewis was ignominiously ousted from boxing after being convicted of tampering with his fighter’s gloves. Irish Billy Collins suffered a terrible beating against Luis Resto, whose gloves were determined to have been tampered with. Very unsavory character Panama Lewis-heartless, vicious-and in retrospect a thorough ascoundrel.

Also thanks for keeping it real with the Wilder Showtime stats. I personally don't guarantee either guy would win the fight my gut tells me there is more Hagler (Destruct and Destroy) in Wilder than in AJ. The other thing people don't understand is that the UK has far less sports entertainment options than we do in the US hence the reason 78K and 90K show up for a fight in the UK.

boxinginfo Exactly. On top of that Boxing is for more affordable to veiw in the UK on every platform from tickets to streaming services.

I think you'll agree with me Stork, we were spoiled in the 80s as fans. We had so much exposure to quality boxing then, on network tv, HBO, ESPN, USA channel, Tuesday night fights, both the NY post and Daily news covered it... GOOD times..

mike weaver I remember you could measure how really big a fight was by what coverage they got in the papers. Both of those papers as well as Newsday were set up like books unlike papers today like the NY Times. On Saturday August 22,1981 the back cover of one of those two papers you mentioned had the headline "Sanchez Batters Gomez" and a full page black and white picture of Gomez on the deck in the first round looking up at Sanchez. On the morning of I believe Wednesday September 17, 1981 the FRONT cover of some of those papers reported Leonard stops Hearns full front page news. Spoiled? Maybe, but you're right those were some good times.

Maybe my favourite fight ever. Arguello had one of the most aesthetically pleasing styles ever and Pryor was the ultimate brawler. Hagler-Hearns was also amazing, but it wasn't such an epic. (Golota-Bowe II is another very underrated fight, mainly because the ending was a disappointment.)

I really relate to a lot of your opinions, I think its because we both caught the boxing bug around the same time and were about the same age. I was already a fan of boxing, but one Saturday afternoon I was treated to chacon vs Boza Edwards. It was the one chacon won. I was pulling for Edwards..As the fight went into the later rounds they were like to race horses coming down the home stretch gutting it out. I was totally swept up by it and have been a boxing geek ever since. Good vid Stork... Peace..

abovebeneath I'm with you! I couldn't believe Chacon beat Limon in his previous bout and was fully expecting Boza Edwards to decapitate him like he had done 2 years earlier in a fight that wasn't all that close before it was stopped. Money and globalism has nearly killed this sport in terms of how these guys perform. I would love to interview Marvin Hagler and ask him what he thinks of these guys efforts present day.

One of the most underrated Fights of all times unbelievable fight your Completely hundred percent correct about the 15 round fights Change of momentum thing because I have watched 15 round Fights and it’s completely different now I was born after the change form 15 round to 12 But Watching them it’s completely different does fight have a different feeling to them but I guess that’s how things go things change sometimes for the better sometimes for the worse 12 round fights is for the worse probably a money grab by the TV networks that’s why you can’t compare Boxers from different generations that’s why people that say Floyd Mayweather is literally the best ever have no idea what they’re talking about they have no idea about the history of boxing number 1 Number two and more importantly the best is a opinion based question

boxingguru100 the real reason fights were changed from 15 to 12 rounds is because the 48 minutes it takes to complete a 12 round fight fits nice and neat into a 1 hour network telecast. NOW ask the brainiacs who came up with that idea what happens when network TV turns its back on boxing for the last 25+ years? The answer is we get the garbage we get now. Great 2 way fights are the exception now, they used to be the rule 30+ years ago.

boxinginfo It is sad when something great gets sacrificed in the name of money I’ve heard some people say about How 15 round fights are more dangerous to boxers but I don’t think that’s true because Most of the boxers that have passed away as a result of damage in the ring did so within the first 12 rounds

Love these retrospectives. Keep 'em coming. Thank goodness, though, that they don't do 15 rounds fights in this day and age, though. 15 rounds of Jacobs-Arias? No thanks.

@lane99 Hey bud long time! Was Jacobs-Arias for a title? This is my whole argument - everything is 12 rounds - should Jacobs-Arias be on the same level as GGG-Canelo? I don't think so, but maybe I'm wrong.

Glad to see you back. Oh, I assumed it was for a title. Everything's for some paper title or another these days. But quickly checking it seems it may not have been.

Great look back, man. I hear you about the behavior of the average fighter in boxing. Any excitement for potential match ups between Crawford, Spence and Thurman? I've been watching a lot of Hagler in his prime again and I'm a little disappointed he didn't seem to have anyone who could really push him in a hellish battle. Hearns came closest but Hagler was always in control. The Bennie Briscoe fight was interesting. There's probably very few middleweights in history that could have done that. UFC 217 was excellent. Glad Namajunaz won. Dissapointed in Garbrant but not super surprised. GSP looked like one of the GOAT's that he is who's lost a step.

Daniel Turin - I would feel more excited about Crawford/Thurman/Spence if Crawford would have earnestly tried to finish off Postal and same thing for Thurman against Garcia. Spence I have hope for. BUT I maintain that they are only hungry and willing to take risks up until they reach the PPV level then just winning is ok to them, Mayweather was never the same risk taker he was the night he beat Gatti after he reached the PPV level. I think the closest thing to somebody pushing Hagler (his prime for this fight is debatable) was John Mugabi. UFC 217 may have been the best card ever. I was shocked Garbrandt beat Dominick Cruz as easily as he did, had a hunch Dillashaw had too much game for him and beat him at his own game. GSP needed that rest I remember him looking gassed against Johnny Hendricks who can't buy a win anymore.

Now the only fact we know now days it's Pryor did took drugs According to Panama Luis. Many years later. The only reason we know about Pryor it's because he did fight Alexis Arquello after that he never did anything. Btw Alexis Arquello is the greatest super feather weight in history and many others records he never loss all their championships bells. And for your info he is in the 20 greatest fighters of All time.
