As professionals are already using lactate - finger prick style, very regularly, the difference will be negligible for them. Where I think you’re going to see the biggest gain is actually in the level of top level age groupers (particularly in the triathlon world, where they are data geeks)- actually. A wearable will be able to allow them to train at a professional level because they can monitor themselves equivalently. The gap between age group and professionals will shrink dramatically, but it’s not going to level up the professionals much more than they already are.

I think it will be a while yet. Most coaches just do a needles and sharps training course, write up risk assessment, invest in PPE and disposal get insurance. It’s pretty quick and cheap to set up to do lactate testing. Personally finding SmO2 nirs sensors a lot more useful.

I am pretty sure when I did a V02 test many years ago, pretty sure they used my ear to take the blood, throughout the test ( the test was done in a sports science lab at a university). A week later got a nice report by email which more or less along with V02 numbers, also gave the lactate threshold, plus heart rates zones etc. I have no idea if the information from this is applicable all these years later (15 years). But it seems to fit, above x heart rate the lactate is going to build up faster than your body can remove it.

I recently did my third test at Loughborough Uni which incorporates lactate testing, I’ve found both ftp and ramp tests to give me a higher FTP value than my lactate threshold, for example my best 1hr power this year was 299w, my Zwift ramp test said 333w and my lactate threshold was 280w. It’s worth mentioning that there are two lactate thresholds, LT1 is usually at the top end of Z2 and then LT2 is at the top end Z4 (6 zone model). Personally I’ve found it really helpful to know these metrics and base any training around them, I’m not sure I’d use a wearable device though as once you know the values HR and power are fine metrics to know where you are in relation to your thresholds at any time.

Ramp tests can overestimate if you are good in anaerobic performance 🙂 My ramp tests usually overestimate by around 15-20W. For example doing a ramp test I’ve got a result of 240, while doing a half monty I’ve got a result of 220. Which is a substantial difference and I am pretty sure I would have a hard time holding 240W for even 20 minutes. Afaik LT should usually be a bit above FTP, but I might be mistaken. Either way, a full hour FTP effort is what’s going to give you the most accurate real world numbers, regardless of what your meqsured LT is.

Lactate test results don't necessarily indicate performance. I did one when I did a race block in Europe with USAC and David Thompson got one of the lowest numbers.

they say in their product site that it gives the data after the workouts, so this is just not good enough... and smelling the lactate from sweat temperature and salt amounts is quite far fetched from blood or muscle lactate for my thought process

It’s the same thing that diabetics do very day. So there is no doctor nessesairy for testing lactose. You need the reader and the strips to check. Even better would be if it can be checked using like a Freestyle Libre tool. That’s measures your glucose values every 10 minutes. So the combination would be an great option

The trainers coaching marathon runners are now setting the initial pace based on lactic thresholds. Regardless of your personal fitness/anaerobic capacity the lactate build up derails your late game strength and stamina

Issue is that since UCI already banned CGM, I expect they will ban a CLM at least during a race.

Oops already banned. But may be useful for training.

I feel like LT being the same as FTP is a misconception. They are correlated and might indicate a change to your FTP in the short term, but in general I don’t think you can check someone’s LT and say what is their FTP? It would be boring if it was the case, no? 🤪

Lol, how close do those microphones need to be to their mouths?! I bet if they moved then a foot a way we'd still hear them just fine 🤷‍♂️

They probably having a really annoying hum in the background having the mic closer makes it easier to cancel out

Why don’t you plug it in to a pro boxer 🥊 during a fight and teach him no to go above his lactate threshold or avoid lactate pain despite being attacked by a stronger opponent. Enough of this cycling nonsense!

Interesting idea. I agree that it will probably be sold to wealthy consumers in a few years, probably as a re-purposed medical device with at $100/month subscription, similar to glucose monitors. Just one thing though, your introduction makes no sense and was factually wrong in all sorts of ways. I know that you are not doctors or sports physiologists, but please read the Wikipedia article on Lactate threshold: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactate_threshold
