Oh honey… 300 is on the low end. People have paid that for switches or keycaps alone, mainly hard to find switches like Brown Alps. Neon Green Alps sell for about 10 dollars a switch, if you can even find one.

The space bar sounds kinda hollow and tinny. Maybe adding some kind of sound deadening material stuck to the inside of the key may improve that. Rest of the keys sound good.

@@MrMichaeldwatson You don't want to lube boxes in the first place, really. Considering they let dust pass in and out and lubricating doesn't provide much of a benefit for the BOX line specifically. Even then asking anyone to lube switches on their first try isn't exactly advisable since it can take up to four minutes per switch to lube, assuming you didn't ruin any switches' keyfeel. I'd say for even 99% of mech enthusiasts, asking them to lube their own switches is asking too much for the marginal benefit it provides.

You missing the point completly. The whole RGB thing is something wich attracts younger people - thats why he said ''I am not 12''. Has nothing to do with caring about how something looks in general. Its just like some stuff looks childish due to mostly childs are attracted to it and therefore use it. Coiling a cable is some kind of looks that attracts usually a more mature audience - there for its not childish. However, ofc there are children wich dont like RGB and matures which do. But if you call something childish its all about statics. And statisicly hes totaly corret. Sidenote: RGB will decrease performance of hardware by 10% and without irony is a waste of energy even though not much.

Dynamic Dissonance coiling cables isn’t sophisticated and grown up. Get over yourself. Solid color underglows can really make a retro build like Miami or pulse and also look great on accented sets. There’s a degree of enthusiasm for expensive pre-builts, as well. I’m not talking about the “epic gamer” keyboards, either. I’ve fallen in love with my Keyboardio Model 01. Split design; ergonomic; Fully user-programmable firmware. It has a wooden case. It lights up (I asked, they said at this price point, tacking on $5 of LEDs is a sort of may-as-well, and I’ve been using it as a practical mode indicator). I could have gotten a quiet version, but I like loud keyboards, so I got the clicky version.

Manufacturing, business, and economics have evolved greatly within the 70 years of your grandmother's fridge. The context has evolved greatly. The best invocations of the survivorship bias tend to be when evaluating situations within a limited scope ( the aeroplane armor example from the 'you are not so smart' podcast, or Michael Shermer's Steve Job's example ) . I've been diving down the mechanical keyboard rabbit hole for a few years now and while I still like Cherry MX blue switches, honestly Razer's goofy "opto-mechanical" switches on the Huntsman and Huntsman Elite keyboards have stolen my heart. They're everything I like about Cherry MX blues (tactile, clicky) but lighter actuation force, and their actuation/reset point is both the same and higher up than Cherry switches so you don't have to press the keys down as far to type. As a touch-typist this has made a world of difference in speed and accuracy, as well as eliminating the fatigue that sometimes happens after long typing sessions on my MX blue keyboards. That all being said - the one membrane keyboard thing I miss is the shape and layout of the Microsoft Ergo 4000. It is perfect with the front plastic riser thingy, but I found the comfort of mechanical switches outweighed the superior wrist positioning for me. If someone would make literally that exact keyboard but with these Razer laser switches, they could have all my moneys. All of them.

I guess I could add a modifier and use the right : shift, win, cntrl, menu - which I guess is what u do? - but then I would need to add another keypress to get my shortcuts to work. - most important would be "block-move" where I jump between blocks of code with alt-directional. I guess cntrl-shift + directional might work, but sounds like a hassle. How did u solve this?

Right now your keys with stabs are very rattly of you just grab some dielectric grease and slap some on, it'll fix that. You could also lube the switches but even I havnt tried that cause taking apart every switch to add lube then reassembling them all sounds like a nightmare.

SA isn't good for gaming but it's nice for typing and SA keysets always look gorgeous. If you build another one, I highly suggest clipping the stabilizers and lubricating them. It'll get rid of the rattle sound and feel of the stabilizers, making them feel buttery smooth.

Mechanical keyboards and the community around are pretty comparable to audiophiles. Good job on your first built, but I highly recommend you to lube the switches and especially the stabilizers. Also you should definitely clip the stabs to reduce the noise which will reduce the rattle and make your keyboard sound better. And putting some foam under the PCB can reduce some the the annoying reverb. O rings might be an option but some people don't like them as they make the keyboard a little less sharp feeling.

I ordered some Kailh Burnt Oranges but I had to cancel my order for them because of these issues: - Can develop a click after lube has worn off - Slightly rotates clockwise overtime - Can damage keycaps of certain plastics when putting the cap on. Are these still an issue?

Just take it apart once, put a piece of non-conductive foam below the PCB and you'll have a much more silent keyboard. If you want to go even further, then go for double shot PBT keycaps and again stick a piece of rubber mat below the chassis.

$300.. Nah, I'll stick with my $150 Ducky with sweet and smooth tactile bump MX Brown switches and mild LED backlighting. I'm not a child either, but I like having backlighting. That's a really, really refined looking 60%, though. Those key caps are gorgeous.

The keycaps sound a little loose unfortunately. The spacebar sounds like it works the corner. Everything else sounds good, but this makes me wonder if the actuation point is the same on each switch or if the looseness affects that. All in all, I am impressed. I've recently discovered the Wooting keyboard and have been trying to find something to beat it.

You should look into tuning and lubing your stabilizers. You have some really loud rattle from them. Just applying a good bit of dielectric grease to the stabilizer wires where they go into the plastic part of the stabilizer will almost entirely remove it

My Mac is plugged into my TV so sitting on the couch, I'm essentially limited to using a wireless keyboard with a built in trackpad. The Logitec K400 is pretty much the only decent option out there and that's crazy that it's the case. I would gladly pay a few hundred bucks if there was a quality tactile product.

Hey, just a tip. KBDFans provides cheap stabilizers, unless you order genuine cherry stabilizers (they sell them, so does a local vendor called Novelkeys here in the US). If the rattle ever starts getting on your nerves, I suggest buying some genuine cherry stabs, and lubing them with some dielectric grease. This will improve the sound substantially, and in my opinion, makes the typing experience overall more enjoyable.

All the money goes to the GMK set. DZ60 boards are actually pretty cheap. You can get a set of TAIHAO OEM caps for 50 bucks and a KBDfans aluminum case for 80. I'd get the hot swap dz60 which is another 55 bucks, cos switching out switches without having to desolder is well worth the extra 20 bucks. Then you get your burnt orange switches for 25 dollars with a few extra just in case. Of course, get some good stabs and lube them, which costs another 20 dollars. This ends up around 225 dollars, and you get an arguably better experience than the one you built. Also, if you don't need hot swappable pcb, just get the regular DZ60 with the burnt orange set on KBDfans for 52.5. That's a steal. It'll bump the cost down to sub $200.

Coming from someone who does not currently own a custom keyboard, but is looking into building one, i don't think $300 is too bad for a nice keyboard. More expensive prebuilt gaming keyboard are already getting dangerously close to that price point, and they aren't really anything special. Some dedicated media keys, a whole lot of RGB and maybe some extra macro keys, but otherwise just bog standard mx-cheapo switches, cheap keycaps and plastic cases. $300 for a keyboard that is built to my preference and with more premium components is pretty reasonable, especially since it's upgradable and user serviceable.

I cannot imagine how any keyboard, no matter the price, can be much better than my forty year old Model M Compact buckling spring keyboard, which I found new in its sealed box in the dumpster at my place of work. These keyboards were originally supplied only with IBM servers. I have four of them. I also have several Model M standard keyboards, also superb. I'm glad motherboard manufacturers still put PS2 connectors on new motherboards for gamers. How many other pieces of technology from 40 years ago are still among the best available? None.

A tip for new solderers: If you want your soldering job to look very clean and professional get yourself a brush and use some alcohol to clean the flux from the board after you make the solder joint... Or just use 63/37 solder with no flux.

Hey! FYI, baking the cable into the coil is just 1/2 of the coiling process. After it’s cooled off, you invert the coiling, which gives the coil its “snap”.
