This dog is what everyone told me would be my biggest mistake .. and it very well could have been if I didn't do my research. #MiniAussies are definitely not a forgving breed when it comes to the proper training and making sure you know what you are getting is key.
Frankie has been a blessing of a puppy and he has been an even better dog. If you were to ask me if I would get another #australianshepherd without a doubt I would say yes.

I'm 77. Last fall/winter I was feeling especially fatigued but continued searching for a puppy, since our previous dog had passed nearly 2 years ago. I found the perfect dog, unfortunately around Christmas, and brought her home early January, right at the start of the worst rains in about 50 years. So picture this: tired 77 yr lady and a bouncy black lab puppy - managing "100" potty walks a day, free-runs that include zoomies (on mountain property and dirt roads), and endless paw-wiping. 😁 She owned my schedule fot a few months and now my heart forever. I'm healthier and she more settled, accepting being in her crate or the yard if I have to leave her, and riding along with me in the truck at times. As the weather is clearing, she is getting leash-trained on longer walks and we will soon be doing 4 mile jogs every other day. She is "a lot", but I wouldn't have it any other way. ❤️

I unfortunately started out with puppy pee pads, because of the ice and snow here. It was a mistake now I'm trying to train her to go potty outside... We will get there😁

@@margies5906 not to worry - we had pee pads everywhere for a while, and her "aim" was not good 😁. Bcz hubby is also a senior and still works in construction, I did NOT crate puppy overnight: we put portable fence around the crate on linoleum, plus water bowl and pee pads, so we had no crying. At about 4 mo she just stopped doing anything overnight. Because she peed so many times on the carpet (just off the edge of the pad, of course) I watch her carefully now (5 months) as sometimes she walks to the door, sometimes sits at my feet and stares at me (that means 1) potty, 2) nap, or 3) play 🤣). I also try to let her out after a nap or a playtime. It all works out...enjoy this time as puppyhood passes quickly. ❤️

I feel your pain. My Aussie-mix best friend passed (17 yo, 12 years with us) a couple of weeks before covid turned everything up-side down. It was devastating. Memories are bittersweet, but comforting at the same time. Just remember that their love was real, and don't shut your heart down. Eventually it will ease. It took time, (then was 3 times harder due to covid restritions) but there are now 2 Aussie-mixes sharing our home, loving & owning us and keeping us busy. Best wishes to you.

The pain of losing a trusted companion is almost unbearable at times, you are not alone. They are with us for so short a time. As the owner of 2 border collies, very high energy also. People often see me running my dogs and getting the energy on hold, and they say " What kind of dog is that, I would love one". I always tell them "if you can't get them out 3 times a day for exercise, get a Golden". Golden retrievers are the best all around, even tempered, low maintenance dog for a family pet.

Joey great video and I got a full Aussie because of you and Frankie, and yes they do have a lot of energy. Yes dogs do have a short life and enjoy every minute you can. I have had many dogs in my life and I miss everyone of them that have passed, but I have dogs with now and I enjoy them all the time. I have not been on a vacation in over 10 years. I really do not need one as I have a farm and that really is all I need and my dogs.

The transition of not a dog parent to dog parent feels like the first time transition to human baby parents. It took me a while to get accustomed, but I am so happy to live with three dogs and three children.... but life is so completely different from before. We have one Border Collie/ Aussie Mix and two Amstaffs, they love each other and are so different. They need a lot of company and care from us humans, but also take such good care of us.

Each dog, even within a breed will have its own personality. Our lab, once she hit 2, was the biggest couch potato and only a duck could make her run. I had a border collie, shepherd mix. She could run circles for an hour, rest for 10 mins, and be ready to go again but she was the sweetest, most elegant, most obedient dog. She’d even herd the others and tattle when they escaped. Even though I met my husband within a month of getting her, she was mine until the day she passed. Not a night goes by that I don’t miss getting woken up with her staring at me to give me her nightly patrol “report” every hour on the hour, followed by the most ungraceful, thunderous flop a 40 pound body could possibly manage. She would sashay when she walked, crossed her legs on every lie down, but would walk up to you burp and blow it in your face and find the foulest thing she could and roll in it.

@@wholeshebang1 she absolutely was. I was teaching when I got her and she was my first dog. I wanted an older dog because everyone wants puppies and I wouldn’t have as much training time. I went to the pound because adopt don’t shop. It was a 2 hour drive but I went on 3 separate trips because I wanted it to stick. The third time, one of the volunteers said she had the perfect dog, and the rest is history. You never know what treasures you’ll find, even though it really was hard leaving other little hearts behind.

Whoa! A poodle is a full-on retriever/sporting dog despite its size. They are incredibly smart and high energy. The poodle love balls, water, and if you don't exercise them enough, they will eat your furniture. I had a miniature that ate two chairs and a couch, before I realized I had a full-on sporting dog that needed to be worked. My poodles might not be herders, but they can be excellent bird dogs and give any Labrador a run for its money out hunting. They were bred in Germany to hunt birds, and the funny haircut is designed to keep important organs and joints warm when out hunting, and not to make it look like a fancy dog. A poodle can learn pretty much any trick you want to teach in within one session. Show it what you want it to do, and it will do it. Aussies are known for being extremely trainable and smart, but there is a reason poodles have been used in showbusiness for years. Poodles are every bit as smart as your Ausie. They are probably equally the smartest breeds on the planet. But you have to keep them both busy and they need their brains worked daily, or they can have some severe problems. You should look into what a poodle is all about. The stupid part about all these puppy mills breeding these poodle mixes is they are ruining their non shedding coat, and the poodle is already a perfect dog. Why mix a Labrador /bird dog with a poodle bird dog and call it better than before. If anything, you are simply dumbing down the poodle. Those mixes have so many other health issues and other issues and they are no longer hypoallergenic.

Not to mention their freaken strength its like they have zero fat and all muscles beneath their hair! Yes hair not fur so no shedding

Everything you’ve said in this video is completely true. We’ve got an Aussie and we always find a way to fit exercise into her daily routine. She goes to doggy daycare Tuesday through Friday for about 6 hours while the wife and I are both working so she gets constant socialization and exercise with the other dogs. Very thankful for the outside backyard they have at the daycare. Saturday thru Monday we take her everywhere we go. She’s our best friend. She doesn’t like bikes, scooters, skateboards. Anything with wheels but she’s gotten used to them now that she’s about a year and a half. Thanks for your content. I love to watch it.

Have had nothing but Aussies since 1970’s. Yes they can be challenging sometimes but they are love bugs. Always hurts so much when they get old and pass, but life feels so empty without them and we quickly get a new one. I know owners of other dogs feel the same. Taking my girl out for a run now!

Amen to "life changing decision". We got a Border Collie Lab mix 2 years ago, and my life hasn't been anywhere the same since. I plan my work life around him, spending at least 6 hours a day (plus the entire night) close to him. We (I) walk him at least 3 times a day and make sure that on at least one of these trip he gets to run unleashed and with other dogs. We jog/run with him 2-3 times a week, and we constantly work with his brains as well. A few months ago we got him "Fluent pet" push buttons, and he caught on to "drive the car" very quicky. For a while i had to drive him around 4-5 times a day when he pushed that button. I used to travel extensively before we got him and now we either do road trips in Europe with him or stay at home. But boy, has he made me happy!

I just got an Australian Blue Heeler puppy. I am 73 years old. My husband passed. I wanted a companion. People warned me. But I have grown up with dogs. My grandmother raised them. My husband and I had a Schnauzer, 2 mutts, and 4 Dobermans. Not at one time but all thru our married life. But was I in for a surprise. Several friends warned me. But , of course, I thought I had raised 5 puppies. Never a dull moment with Rascal. He is an intelligent dog with an exceptional personality. Very loyal. They are very sensitive to our reactions. But he is an 8 month old puppy with an overabundance of energy. I happened to get a people lover dog. Hope he eventually learns about the good, the bad, and the ugly. If you are looking for a layed back lap dog, this is not your breed. I love him, and we are adjusting to each other.

We have an Aussie. His name is Axel and I agree, he's so compassionate and smart! My first time walking him nearly ended in disaster. I didn't put his collar on correctly and he had the chance to run into the road but he didn't. As a stranger helped me make a makeshift colar (tying his leash around his neck), he waited patiently while I held him (I was being a complete mess, crying and gasping for air like i usually do). Bringing him home was pretty hard for me, since i couldn't really see much due to my tears. Axel, however, walked ME home and even tried to jump on me a few times to try comforting me. He basically dragged me home (we weren't far) while i was crying and hyperventilating. Overall, he's a really good dog, and I'm glad that he's my best friend.

We have a Tri-Red Aussie(just like Indy) she is a wonderful dog. She has been with us since she was 10 weeks and now is 4 years old. You gave great advice. And made us laugh. But yes they need you… they need to play … and they learn easily. So get them on a schedule that works for you …. Life is great with an Aussie as long as you understand they need a lot of love and bonding moments… and I return they will be a loving companion!!!

We have an almost 1-year-old border collie AND a toddler, and I have to say YES! Puberty hits hard right now (with the dog, not the toddler :D), and there are days when I ask myself "Why again are you doing this? You did everything completely wrong. Look at other dogs his age who are better trained." But then he cuddles right beside us at night, the times he knows how to play with our son (no, they are never unsupervised) and when his improvements are very obvious like the time we could bring him to the barn and he wasn't scared of the horses anymore. i know he will be the best dog in the world eventually, but right now he drives me nuts sometimes :D

My favorite dog is my blue Merle Sheltie. She gets mistaken for an Ausie. I've been told the difference is Shelties don't have an off button. My Sheltie is so empathetic she lost weight and alot of her coat when I was injured in an accident and spent two weeks having surgery in hospital. I came home smelling different, and she treated me like a ghost for a while

Same with Corgi. I watched these videos from the beginning, when Frankie was pup. 100% agree. Mine knows she is going to get bath after the muddy dog park. She goes upstairs to the bath, and waits to be lifted in....I have bells on the front door, and she hits them when she wants to go out. Lately, I've been getting my 10K steps + a day and we go to the dog park almost every day. They need physcial and mental stimulation. I had a red merle live here and then, a red merle pup arrived - he was NOT food motivated and stealing socks was his favorite game. He left and then via petfinder, my Corgi arrived.

I know what you mean. I fell in love with a dog where I kept my horse and asked if she ever has puppies I’d love one. When she did I found out she was a border collie and I didn’t know anything about them. I learned quick how much exercise they needed. Lucky I was home almost all the time or I could take him with me. I never knew a dog could be so smart. I’m too old now to have one and I miss them so much. Very good video, I have had white german shepherds for the last 25 years. My wife and I have had to changed our life style to the dogs needs, and we are better for having them in our lives-- having them out ways all the bad, but it is priority. It breaks my heart every time I have to say good bye to my best friends because their entire lives are spent with me and my wife. I will never forget them and they are always in my heart, I wished dogs lived longer, but all my dogs are family and lived played and loved their whole lives with us. I miss all my dogs that I have had to say good bye too. It is never easy to let them go, but I know we loved them hard when they were in this world. My current 2 are 6 years old and I cherish everyday with them. Your video is great and you touch on being a good fur parent. I loved it.

I have a toy Aussie. She’s 17 lbs. We have to take at least 2 walks a day. She also needs to get her zoomies out right before bed so we throw the toy monkey for about 15 minutes until she’s done. She hates to be separated from me but since I’m retired it very seldom. But going to the store is hard because of the sad eyes that watch me close the door. I am completely in love with my Aussie! They have the best most loving personalities!

My husband and I got a high energy lab/husky/German shepherd mix after we had an empty nest. He loves "working" with my husband, car rides, walks, and lying on the glider on our porch or the couch indoors. He gets very excited when our young grandchildren come to visit, or anyone, for that matter!

What fabulous advice. This is so sincere and well meant. My son and I have had many conversations about what dogs mean to us and how they are family needing and giving love so easily. Over the past few years I have seen the opposite of this … the dog owner who thinks a dog is just a dog, not even a pet. I couldn’t live without dog cuddles but at the same time I realize their needs and wants. Each sentence of this video is so important I wish humane societies everywhere would use it as a teaching tool for potential dog owners.🎉🎉❤

I don’t appreciate your comment about poodle mixes. I was really enjoying your video because so much of it is what I also do…for my poodle mix. It is just about understanding your dog and your breed. My routine with her is much like yours. And I separation trained her and I keep up on that training. I love how attuned you are to your dog’s daily needs. I wish every dog owner was this thoughtful. This is my 3rd Aussie, and yes... they are intense, the training has to be consistent and enjoyed by both owner and dog on a daily basis. The need for exercise is real -these aren't lap dogs. The experience of a young pup can be exhausting, but the payoffs really are apparent once they turn 1.5 years, and their puppy brain because more mature. While empathic, they can grow to a point where they project their own opinions on things as well, which is pretty funny to experience. The payoffs are big --these are empathic, enthusiastic, and loyal dogs, who want nothing more than to be with you!

My ex husband was a special investigator with the BCSPCA. He saw so many beautiful animals with people who should never have the right to have animals. Pets are members of your family. They cry. They smile. They love. They hate. They are so very empathetic and they give our lives meaning. We started our kids with rodents. Why? Because rats are very smart, affectionate and require a fair bit of care if done right. Changing a rat cage isn't pleasant but it's quick and as the lifespan is short it teaches the child how to deal with grieve fairly quickly. My kids have always had dogs or cats as well as surprises that their dad brought home from work. Raccoons, squirrels, birds, snakes. They knew the joy and the heartache so now that they are adults my one daughter refused to get an animal until she owned her home. This was because she had heard too many times how someone had dropped off their pet because the landlord said no. She was determined when she finally brought in a pet that that animal was with her for its entire life. And she will love and care for that animal like it is her child. It is up to parents to teach their children the responsibilities of having animals in their family. It is up to society as a whole to enforce the moral rules for those who take on animals . Love your animal. Be it a small rodent to a large farm animal. They all deserve kindness and care.

Totally loved this video. I recognise a lot of what you said about how having a dog changes your schedule. I have a belgian malinois/labrador mix called Leia and she is also a very energetic dog that wants to work and play all the time. My life has improved tremendously since i got her and she takes care of me just as much as i take care of her. A lot of people dont understand how life changing having a great dog can be. It is very clear to see that you do!

Our Willow goes where we go. She has plenty of room to run on HER property. Yup hers. All Shepherds are protective of their turf. Also they can overheat in the summer months and need plenty of water and shade. Get them groomed in the summer. Winter let them shag out. Below 0° might be rough on you but it's balmy weather for a Aussie.

I wish I’d seen this before I got my dog. My husband and I got what we thought was an adult mix at the shelter, so there wasn’t any breed research we could do. But even though we both had dogs as kids, we still managed to underestimate how much work (and money) a dog is when you’re the responsible party. The first year would’ve been a lot easier if we’d had more realistic expectations. We love our fur baby, but we all would’ve been happier if we’d known up front what our dog needs. we asked for a medium adult dog that would laze around the apartment with us. Instead the shelter gave us a mostly-catahoula puppy. Our vet was like, “uh, this dog is not three years old. This dog isn’t even a year old. Also, the dog park is going to be a daily occurrence or your stuff will all be destroyed.”

We had 5 Aussies! They are wonderful dogs! They are so much fun! Now we have 2 Border Collies; 2 Catahoula Leopard dogs; a boxer; a Japanese Akita Inu and a beagle. There is a lot of energy in our home just with the dogs!/😊

Thank You ! Thank You ! for this very informative video. Too many people get a dog and don't know how to look after it and the animal really suffers. I wish there were more people like you in this world. I really hope the people listen to your advice and learn from it. I myself have 11 rescue dogs but in the past it's been up to 30 and I've loved everyone of them. The hart braking time is when they leave you through serious illness or old age. But Thank God most of them live until 16 or 17 years old even the large dogs. There all happy well fed and are my babies. 🐕🐶🐕‍🦺

Thank you! I live in a place that people seem to expect to bring their dog everywhere! Church, grocery store, clothing store etc, etc. I believe there are healthy places for dogs, and not so great, like crowded music venues and festivals. I feel bad for dogs that have to dodge drunk people's feet, strollers and screaming kids. Sometimes dogs would rather be home chilling.

A friend has three Border Collie/Queensland mixes or similar size and confirmation to your mini Aussie. They truly enhance her life and got her through three stages of cancer therapy. They're loving and empathetic, far beyond most people, and fun doesn't begin to explain them.

This is a lovely and realistic Video. Dogs sleep 18-20 hours a day but that leaves 4-6 hours, many people aren't prepared for that. I have a poodle and he is, not passionate but nonetheless a hunter, he is super intelligent and he so needs exercise. He is 8 kg full of Energy. I'm sure it's a fraction as much as a Border Collie or Australian Shepherd but they need a purpose and they want to learn and to cooperate.They're great company but you have to meet their needs.
