This DR30 Nissan Skyline is the Red Panda

“We always want what we can’t have,” says Jay Kho. “The Supra, back in the day, you could go to a dealership and purchase one. You could never purchase a Nissan Skyline…it’s like a treasure you never want to let go.”
Born in the Philippines, Jay Kho grew up with a car trading, street racing father who would race his Japanese car, “at Midnight,” he says. Once he emigrated to the U.S., however, Kho became quickly immersed in American and European cars, which were totally foreign to him at the time. After owning a few interesting ones, including a ’66 Ford Mustang, a chance encounter with an imported-but-hidden 1983 DR30 Nissan Skyline became an obsession.
“I grew up in the ’80s, I’m an ’80s kid. Look at this car, and right away, you know it’s ’80s. It’s made in the ’80s. It’s so boxy, just the angular shape to it,” Kho says. After changing the engine to an SR20 and freshening the car as needed so he’s able to enjoy it, Kho’s R30 Skyline is road legal and his pride and joy. Despite its ‘Godzilla’ nickname, he’s modest about its performance, saying the SR20, “…has decent power, enough for me to enjoy it”.
Now that he has his dream car, will Kho sell it? Not a chance-he’s still surprised he has the keys to a DR30!
“It’s something that we could only dream of and aspire to,” he says. “Knowing that you have it in your garage…I’m like, ‘Wow, it’s there…”

I was initially surprised how good it looks in Las Vegas... but then I thought, well, it was designed in Japan, and Tokyo at night is _at least_ as bright and colourful as that, so actually it makes sense. Race livery tribute works pretty well too.

You see those classic round taillights and you know its a skyline. They look so good especially since the shape of this car is square-ish and angular and it makes the round lights pop out. i've never seen this skyline before, but just like the other models it looks good.

you can get rb30 turbo engines in Australia as they were installed in our GM Holden Commodore built cars from 1985 to 1988 in turbo or fuel injected. GM Australia did a deal with Nissan to supply the factory with a good engine which is now a cult classic.

+Liam Bennett if you have problems to get parts then you have the coice of change it or wait for "maybe" working parts to get on the used market. have a friend that got his hand on an old Ferrari 400i with blown engine and shot gearbox for 9000 € estimated repairing the engine would costed at least 40k and would take months since they newer knew when there would be avaible parts. so he tok it out and exchanged the 4.8l V12 with an Alfa Romeo 75 3.0 V6 that had been turbocharged up to 255bhp. and swaped the gearbox for the one from the 75... ofc, it dont do 240km\h more, but 215 are not that bad ether, and it has now tripled its km stand with zero problems... and the old Ferrari engine\gearbox? sold it in parts for more than he payed for the Ferrari in the first place and the crashed Alfa 75

+Liam Bennett well. he's words that the FJ20 was hard to get parts for not mine :P i dont know about getting em in US as i'm from Europe but guess in Japan they would be quite OK to get hold of.... just need to know Japanese. if no other model that have the same engine and parts it might get annoyingly to get hold of parts "locally". hell, even getting parts for cars that was for sale here is some times pain in the ass... believe me, got an 92' Mitsubishi Galant D4 (Non-turbo VR4) and parts for the steering etc is a nightmare to get trough official channels. in my case it was "faster" and "cheaper" to order them directly from Ralliart in Japan (its not fast at all, but faster than not getting anything and shipping is expensive as hell)

Very very nice R30, the Watanabes look absolutely perfect on these, it's not a wheel I like too much but it's like they were made for the 30. I also like my cars more modified, but again, this one is so tastefully done in the period livery with the right amount of low that you can't help but love it.

he knows very well. today's GTR can be traced back to this particular model of Skyline. It was absolutely epic. yes it has different configuration of the engine, it has not the name "GTR" on, but everything of today's Nissan sports car began from this particular car.

Great car apart from the SR20 tractor engine! I see R30 and R31s every day in Australia, but they're always the super boring versions, which was what the majority of Skylines were. Back when they were just normal cars they happened to make performance versions of, not like now where your choice is either expensive luxury Infiniti thing or completely unrelated supercar.

r30 yes love it.. there's a guy her in AZ with a four door I get to drool over it when he passes by. I was a few dollars from getting a Maxima 810 to fill my r30 void but figured my 280zx was enough of a hassle for me as it is and from what my friends tell me is about the same car.
