Combustion Man is specially trained so that all of that energy he builds up from breath is focused through essentially a pin point. He doesn't have a hole in his head, because Firebenders don't have holes in their hands, do they? So imagine taking all of the force of an explosion, crush it down into a bullet, then fire it from a sniper rifle. That's basically what you're seeing.

It brings me great joy to meet someone who obsesses over the combustion-bending sound effect as much as I do! It is such a trivial detail, but it's so impactful, and perfect, and it's like ASMR for me. It's right up there with the sonic charges from the Star Wars prequels. It's that massive pocket of silence just prior to the sound that brings it out with contrast, giving the sound design the entire stage. Just brilliant stuff.

Sokka's Hawk never returns after this, though the writers said it's most likely Toph's family took care of him after the letter was delivered. The Hawk was also a reference to the Avatar Pilot, as originally Zuko would have a Hawk that Momo would get into antics with.

Shame it doesn't return but I misread this first and thought you said Toph's parents cooked it 😂, nice to know that they're taking care of it instead, kind of paints them in a better light than what we've seen from them so far. Love that it's a call back to the pilot episode, that iteration definitely sounds sillier with the protagonist's and antagonist's pets getting into scraps.

Brain Cannon!😂😂😂😂 in all seriousness though, "Combustion bending" as it's been dubbed, is a fire-bending sub-type like lightning, it is done by having the bender focus their chi though a singular point, typically the forehead, as marked by the "eye" tattoo, and blasting it outward as a concussive blast. Training for this technique is extremely grueling, w/ failure often admitting fatal results; there have been six people in all of Atla capable of using it, Combustion Man (shown here), Yingsu, Xiaoyun, Thapa, and Raitei (#6 is spoilers, sorry)... Yingsu, Xiaoyun, Thapa, and Raitei were among many others to be selected for a secret, privately-funded experiment called "The Unanimity project", whose purpose was essentially to create Fire-bender Super-Solders. Yingsu, Xiaoyun, and Thapa were apprehended by Avatar Yangchen, (the Air-Nomad blowing down the forest that was revealed in the S2 E1 Avatar State explanation) and imprisoned in the Northern Air temple (where we met Teo w/ the wheelchair glider and the hot air-balloon in S1), they were later broken out by their masters, however it was presumed that during the breakout Thapa killed Yingsu and Xiaoyun to increase his own position; it was later shown Yingsu escaped w/ the aid of Yanchen on the promise she would never do harm w/ her bending again. Raitei was a child brought into the project, and though he did survive the initial training, he failed to produce adequate results and was ultimately left behind on the island housing the training grounds, he would later encounter Yangchen and her team in their investigation of Unanimity, sadly due to a misunderstanding he would make a unsuccessful attack against them; this would result in the death of both him and Yangchen’s Bison, Nujian…

All of this is so cool!! Love that this ties into the previous Air Nation Avatar as I think she's the least we've gotten info in in the show so far, Roku and Kyoshi got loads of focus, the Water tribe Avatar had the whole Koh thing and now this one has gone against a group of super explosive fire benders!?! The idea of being able to focus the fire on specific points is so interesting and I'd love it if the location of that point changed for each character like maybe one could point to create the explosion rather than have it on their forehead.

Oh absolutely 😂 Toph especially was not great and the Avatar going along with it certainly isn't the best message to send to the world.

@@benspiller At first you'd think Katara was the only reasonable one, and yes, she was, but she was only against it because of the attention it brought to them, and even came up with a scam of her own.

@@benspiller I think the greyscale morality is one of the most mature aspects of this show. Any other kiddie show is "kids! Don't lie! Don't steal! And don't kill but surely we won't go there, right?" But here it is... Stealing is wrong, except when it's from pirates. And scammers. And blackmailing some rich dude, maybe? Is it okay to steal food when you are hungry? From a pregnant couple?...It's the whole spectrum of morality. Same for lying, everyone does it...Aang solves a tribal war with a white lie. Aang lies a lot! And then there is Azula, who lies in the most manipulative malignant way. The writers of this show trusted its young audience enough to tell stories with complex morality; they know when Toph goes too far just like adults do. Our main characters do not share the exact same moral beliefs. This tension in this episode comes from different opinions about what is morally acceptable; but in the end, Toph and Katara decide to respect each other's diffences. Which is a mature thing to do.
