Hi I'm in South Georgia near Savannah and I have grown garlic for a couple seasons. I'm still pretty new to gardening but I've never put my garlic in the fridge. I grow a soft neck variety and so far have had 100% germination rate and a decent harvest. I've seen where some people have done some side by side of refrigerated vs unrefrigerated and gotten better results not putting it in the refrigerator. Happy harvesting.

This was my first year vernalizing my garlic. I planted everything brassicas, onions, mustards, turnips, carrots, beets, kale, sugar snap peas, and some other stuff all be seed on Nov. 7th down here in west central Fl. I am saving for a seeder/weeder combo kit and plan on switching from drip tube above ground to buried drip tape like you use. Keep the videos coming!👏🏻

I live in Alabama (plant my veggies using an Auburn bucket 😁) and I plant my hardneck garlic in a raised bed in November. I have never put mine in the fridge before planting. I usually get a good yield.

Howdy Travis, I just recently planted 2 varieties of softneck and one elephant. I had them in the frig for 2 months, called vernalization btw, and they are now sprouting. However, I also planted about 6 softneck cloves of the same variety that I did not refrigerate, and about a week later planting. They are also now sprouting, so that's my experiment and we'll see. Btw, I'm in Zone 8b/9a in S Texas.

I never refrigerant my garlic, and always have a good stratified crop. I've always used the 15 mil drip tape, but I switched it 6 inch spacing a few years ago. I also went with smaller emitters so I could water more of my garden at one time.
@reneebaranoski957610 ай бұрын
The fridge prep is necessary in so cal where i live, i already did that experiment. You probably get colder there then here but i think refrigeratoring before planting is the sure fire way to go. More emmiters is going to be beneficial for your soil microbes. They need moisture to do their thing so a more even watering will help.

Travis, my daughter wanted to plant garlic last year and didn’t really know how so she planted the whole garlic and they all sprouted and then I helped her separate them and plant into a row. She grew good garlic with no refrigeration or dividing .

I’m Zone 8 in Texas and I’ve been planting garlic for 20 yrs and I never put in the fridge until this year after watching your garlic planting video. I plant my garlic in October and I don’t think the Fridge makes a difference but I plant a old Texas variety.

I’m in Michigan and last year I tried planting some garlic in the Spring. We normally plant late Fall. It did great, harvested shortly after the garlic I planted in the Fall. A couple of the heads hadn’t stratified yet, but, still was tasty garlic.

I did then I got days and nights in the 40's and 50's down to 28 one night in cali lol so my garlic has been naturally getting vernalized i got a cold snap and leaves turned yellow the funny thing is im a warm climate and my hardneck always grows and softneck struggles never really got good softneck. Which is the opposite of conventional wisdom.

Hi Travis. Throughly enjoy your content. I have questions on drip irrigation. 1. How do you determine length of time to run the drip line? 2. What is your system to fertilize through the drip lines? 3. How do you determine the amount of fertilizer to use when using drip lines. I look forward to any videos on these questions and if you have already made videos on this please point me in the right direction. Thanks.

I'm glad I don't need drip irrigation. I rarely water more than a couple times per year, other than transplants. The exception is watermelons but I don't usually plant but a few hills. I put down some form of irrigation under the black plastic, usually a shortened piece of sprinkler hose. Watermelons get watered about once per week if we don't get rain. I can also inject fertilizer into the irrigation water. Ya'll go ahead though. I know you need drip irrigation. I don't know anywhere else but the low country than can have 10 inches of rain one day and it's gone the next. That would be a major flood up here, even washing out bridges, and have people water skiing on Main St., etc.

I might have missed the info, but what is the gph of the emitter holes?

The gph values for drip tape is per 100' -- not per emitter. For this tape, it is 0.45 gph.

Hey Travis, I planted my onions on each side of my drip tape......should I put my fertilizer down the middle of the row (which would be on top of my tape) or put it down each side of the rows? I can't wait to see how my onions turn out. Thanks, Mike C.

I purchased my soft neck garlic from Baker Creek seed company, I hope they did the refrigerating process before selling it to me if it was needed. It's about 8" to 10" tall now. Do you fertilize your garlic between now and harvest time? Here in Florida zone 9b I've been using Agro thrive 3-3-5 and Epsoma garden tone along with muriate of potash. If you do fertilize how often? This is only the second time I've grown garlic. The first time was a failure. Thanks for your help.😊😊😊😊

It's tough to overfertilize garlic. Keep feeding it and it should reward you.

i'm still on my first roll of the 8mm drip tape, and i find it pretty difficult to secure onto the valve takeoff. so thin and fiddly. maybe one day i'll switch to the thicker type trip tape. is there any tricks to unclogging emitters? usually the first one after takeoff seem to clog. mainline tubing is much easier to get onto fittings if you dip it in hot water.
@LazyDogFarm8 ай бұрын
Haven't had any issues with emitters clogging. My filter will clog sometimes.

I was about to ask, how do you store all that stuff for the winter, when I realized that you don’t have to! I love it, but it’s a mess to store. You may ask, why store it at all? If I leave it out, critters like to chew up the header tubing. They don’t touch the drip lines, but the header tubing will be full of holes chewed right through in the spring. Also, on the couplings, critters (skunks primarily) love to chew up the green plastic. I don’t know why, must be something that they smell. Well, I’ll continue to live vicariously through you until I can get out there in March or April.

I heard some wire coating has peanut oil in the component. (A friend had mice chewing her car wires under the hood,. We live in the country) The drip line and parts may have something like that also.

I live in a very hot climate thanks and Merry Christmas.
