Ed, Edd n Eddy, for how mean spirited the show may be, did in fact have it's own Christmas Special, Ed, Edd n Eddy's Jingle Jingle Jangle. So today let's take a look at how a show that I truly hold dear to me, handles the holidays!

Let's face it: Eddy learning his lesson and having a genuinely good ending would feel rather unnatural. That was definitely best saved for BIg Picture Show because in a series where 99% of episodes end with either bittersweet or bad endings, the one good and best ending should be saved for the finale.

There are some episodes where the Eds get a standard ending and survived. One is the prom episode where the Kankers and the Kids got stuck in their own trap while the Eds goes for the exit. So yeah, the Eds are definitely the villain protagonists.

i always hated that though, because it tends to write off the whole purpose of the lessons, not to mention how it punishes the other eds for seemingly no reason. the later seasons of the show have their moments, but it got incredibly mean-spirited with less reasons to back it up. not to mention all of the excessive reliance on pain for "humor"

Eddy as a character really doesn’t deserve happy endings. However, it also sucks when you think about the fact that the episode starts off with him being left home alone the night before Christmas. I always empathized with that detail because it makes you aware of how truly alone eddy is. But the fact he can’t go to his best friends house and just kick it with them holiday-style really says a lot about how he views his “friendship” with the other Ed’s. He chose to try to leave them for the bigger, better deal only to be cast out by all of them when the Ed’s just wanted him to enjoy the holiday spirit.

It also helps kids to appreciate how others may celebrate differently or just not at all and to respect that, be they religious, materialistic or just not even celebrating the same holiday. Also though it's only relevant to me. Coming from a religious family having an episode that acknowledges the Christian side of the holiday was very refreshing for me at least as a kid it always bothered me when a show would bring up the religious side of a holiday as a joke, only to immediately retort with something along the line of "You're wrong / you're weird" if that makes sense. -shrug- It's not super in depth but it made me really look forward to it every year around the holidays.

You’re totally right about the show being Mean-Spirited, and especially here with Eddy being a goblin and not learning his lesson- even after he tortures himself doing so. The show is designed to be that way. It’s part of the brand and the gag of these characters- and perhaps a cautionary tale, if not only to simply be slapstick and outrageous. My Uncle was one of the head writers on the show. He’s mentioned to me that the script writers had a couple strict rules/principals to follow while writing each episode. 1. The Ed’s Never Win 2. The Ed’s Never Learn something The results to me- A cartoon that’s raucous, crude, tragic, cringey, goofey, pitiful. But all in a slapstick lighthearted hilarious way. I love it man

This episode has some really good writing. It reminds me of a Charley Brown Christmas. The creator hated Christmas specials so, when he was told he had to create one he made one that was in his opinion Anti-Christmas. but by focusing on the the things the Creator saw as important and less about the commercial aspect he went on to create, what is now considered a Christmas classic.

Why I love this episode is because it feels like it earns its moment of Eddy learning his lesson, it does a great job of telling a Grinchesque story about how it's not about what you get but what you give. And it's such a wholesome moment when Santa drops the presents for ALL the kids...and the GENIUS is that Eddy realizes in that moment, Christmas is fleeting, but presents are forever, so he takes them AND gets punished for his actions afterwards. It's a fantastic last minute subversion to what would be a wholesome Christmas episode and fitting given that while I may not like The Big Picture Show, Eddy's development had me genuinely convinced that he'd turn over a new leaf by the end. In this case tho his insecurities were too great to simply be the better man and let everyone have their presents haha. That's just my take honestly, just because, this is everything I could've hoped for in a Christmas special based on the BEST Cartoon Cartoon.

As much as this special goes against the traditional Christmas cheer you'd see in other Christmas episodes, I still want to make some time to appreciate how wholesome everyone's kindhearted simpleton, Ed, can be. Maybe I'm just a dumb old softy, but seeing his nearly reverent attitude towards Santa warms my heart. All while Eddy continues to try and disappoint me instead.

Nazz always reminds me of being that age and the one female neighbour everyone had a crush on. Even down to being the age that boys are first becoming interested in her and being overly flirty and nice to all the boys just to experiment. She's not a bad character though and one of the few who seems genuinely a nice person that is polite and kind to everyone besides Edd who also seems to get along with everyone and is the most liked out of the Eds. The funniest thing about her is when you get into her character she's not all that attractive, it's just she is the only girl their own age that is nearby. She's actually quite dumb, has bad manners and has shown to be fairly unremarkable several times. She's very much that first girl you had a crush on that, looking back, wasn't so great.

I love EEnE and I genuinely love this Christmas special. It’s mean spirited sure but it kept the roots of what made the series a classic. I love that each character had their own way of celebrating Christmas and the fake out is definitely something that EEnE could do and pull it off hilariously. Plus after rewatching Big Picture Show, it made this special even more genuine because the Eds got the ending they deserve for the series finale.

I love EEnE in general. It's my favorite cartoon of all time. It just had a real impact on me growing up. The relatability of the characters and situations they got into, the "free spirited" atmosphere and unique humour. My dad loved the show just as much as I did and would watch it with me and my brother all the time before he passed away. Idk....I'm 29 now and looking back EEnE really was a big part of my childhood and because of the fond memories associated with it has really stuck with me and reminds me of happier times.

I actively rooted against Eddy and remember being really happy when the neighborhood kids didn't fall for Eddy's tricks in this special. In my kid brain at the time, I decided that I would have definitely taken the Kevin approach to the matter and punched someone in the face if they tried to do that to me lmao. I think the good thing about this special is that we all know Eddy is the bad guy consistently throughout to the end. If there's any moral message, it's more of what not to do or the consequences of your actions could come back and bite you. Although it does give you a glimmer of hope with the bulb scene, it's sad when you realize even putting the bulb in the Christmas tree really denotes to meaning nothing. It's not like Eddy did it with the intent of the other kids enjoying the display, he just did it because he wanted to. Just because the action didn't directly benefit him does not mean it was a "good" action, which is where Double D makes the moral mistake. I would say what he did is more of a neutral action that anything else. Even as a kid, I wondered what the heck putting a bulb in a string of lights had to do with being a good person.

This show was one of my favorites growing up, mostly for how over the top it could get, like building an entire "big city" out of cardboard. The Eds obsession with jawbreakers always getting out of hand is hilarious and the cast of characters are very well put together and are mostly consistent. I always felt closest to Double D with some of the same troubles that surround being a bit smarter than other children your age. Double D is way smarter than a kid his age has any right being though and actually knows what morals are, which is unusual for kids, even though they still follow their moral compass. Their names are different in my country's dub though. I was amazed to find out that I share a name with one of the cast in the original which I didn't in the dub, this just made me love the show even more

I have been waiting for this one from you! Jingle Jingle Jangle is my one must-watch Christmas special every year. I’ve been watching it every year for at least 8 years now? Which makes it one of my most seen single episodes of all time (also in that category is the Thanksgiving episode of Don’t Trust the B- in Apartment 23). So yeah, definitely one of my favorites ❤️ I like the take on the traditional Christmas story, but also showing some other depictions of seasonal celebrations (and not even the more typical alternatives like Hanukkah or Kwanzaa). As far as the show in general, the art style was always weirdly distinct, but my mom didn’t like to let me watch the show because she thought it was either too stupid or too mean-spirited. But by far my favorite thing about the show is the wonderful sound design that really makes it stand out.

Ed Edd n Eddy was my favorite show growing up and still is today. I watched the show at the very start of the series when it first aired and right to the very end. I even watch the Christmas special very year.

I just noticed that you put the original cartoon network commercial intermission sequences just at the right moments for the youtube commercials. That's good editing, kudos.

As a kid this was my favorite of the specials because growing up in a christian household it was the first time I was able to see both versions of the holiday shown in a cartoon and sort of making fun of both sides. If you're not religious it's a run of the mill "The grass is greener on the other side" story. For me though it was one of the first times I saw a holiday special tackle the idea tht everyone celebrates differently and Eddy is just an excuse for us to see how everyone sees the holiday. DD seems to be the religious one, Rolf has an entirely different version form his homeland, Jimmy is the one of bakes goodies, while Kevin sees it as the one day a year he's willing to be nice, and Naz is well being real nice. I like the idea that this could for other kids be a way of helping understand other people's traditions I know it did for me at least. It reminds me of the MLP episode Hearthbreakers where AJ spends the holiday (that is like a hybrid of Thanksgiving and Christmas with other things in the mix) when she finds that her friend celebrates differently than she does she makes the mistake of trying to to imply that her traditions are superior without trying to understand them where pinkie makes the mistake of rushing so far head first that she's not explaining why these traditions have meaning that they do. It's a very similar moral to me. -shrug-

"All i want is a good christmas!" that line stung as a kid. I felt so bad for Eddy :( looking back behind all the scams and lust for money, all he ever wanted was love and acceptance.

Yeah I actually like this special because almost all Christmas specials depict the villain and hero genuinely act good to one another which to me feels not weird but just off somehow off.

I like this special not because it's funny or impactful but how relevant it feels overtime. In short Christmas was the greatest holiday when you're/I was a kid but as time goes by you start to see it differently. The selfishness in the end really stuck with me to not be so greedy however I definitely noticed the same behavior from my nieces and nephews over the years.

The more I think about it, I’m right there with you. I LOVE ed edd and eddy both back then and now. But, it’s not really a show I would go to for a holiday special. I absolutely go to it for Halloween but not Christmas even though it’s still a good ep.

I think this sounds great. I don't remember it very clearly but I don't think holiday specials ever work because they're always trying to change up the vibe, showing Eddy's the same guy on Christmas as the other 364 days of the year is actually brilliant.
