Thanks for the vid. Larrin Thomas says factory edges are for the masses, you should thin it down to where it works for you. If the edge is too thin; regrind it to a higher angle and use it.

I started buying CS knives in the 1980's and the Master Hunter was one of the most useful of all their models for me. Fortunately, I bought two of them when they were still making them in Carbon V steel.

Ooof... That tip to the concrete hurt to watch! I've been checking out your videos on this newer CS Master Hunter in 3V. I appreciate you doing all these vids since it helped me with my purchasing decision. I got a great deal on one off of eBay due to a damaged box. It was under $70 before shipping! I 100% will reprofile the edge on my diamond plates to create my own convex grind, as you did. Thank you for the great content!

I failed to mention in my previous comment that I purchased the CS Master Hunter 3V, largely based on your videos! I'm a life long big game hunter and always looking for a "better" edge holding knife, even though what I have now will get the job of handling deer and black bear just fine.. These newer powdered steels have caught my attention and I look forward to giving them a try! I usually don't buy an elk tag because I hunt alone and everything I do is based on big white tails or big black bear, which is plenty enough for one man to part out then pack out. But, my adult son who is also a hunter, wants me to start buying an elk tag and will come and help me if he's not actually able to come camping with me like he did when he was younger. If I get an elk down, it will be interesting to see how far into an elk this knife will get before it needs to be touched up! I'm going to be 69 this year and enjoy your no non-sense videos! Keep em coming and the entertainment we get from the "keyboard experts" is always worth a good laugh! :)

If you bought the knife as a collection example, you just made it used nothing more. Adding a Convex cutting edge, you could say definitely is an edge that is stronger than other grind types. Knife makers don’t care what you do with it after you buy it. To me; you are the one that is important with how you like the cutting edge and no one else. 👍
@peterbiltknifeguy8 ай бұрын
Thank you. I agree.
@LXT438 ай бұрын
Some knife makers do care what you do with their knife. Let's just say that if you alter the edge from V to convex like he did and if the edge suffered huge break outs because of bad heat treatment then Cold Steel could refuse to warranty it. Now, you could say that this is 3v steel therefore huge chips in the edge are not possible but I've seen it many times with other steels like 1080 from Ka-bar, etc.

This is exactly the kind of thing that drives me nuts. Take for example Joe-x i love that he destroys knives its entertaining and does give a little bit of info. But it also does a huge dis service to people who dont understand geometry and behind the edge thickness. Take for example one his latest tests. Was a busse steel heart 2. Which had the edge significantly thinned down to be a better chopper/slicer. And of course it failed. And then take the wtg ares which didnt fail but its behind the edge thickness was crazy wide and the geometry look like it was designed for be destructive tested. But he doesnt seem to understand that and calls the busse crap because it failed. 😅 also when he says something has great edge retention, when he actually means edge stability..and even then its mostly just geometry not actual edge stability of the steel itself.
@D00MTR338 ай бұрын
15-16 degrees is plenty tough for a steel like 3v. A lot 9f people don't know how tough steel actually is. Most moras have a 14-15 degree edge on them but its just really broad. Yet no one says that's a weak edge. I have an old Spyderco manix 2 regrind to 0.007" bte in cpm m4 and i did a 9-10 dps edge on it and it held up fine for edc tasks.

Alot of people don't understand blade geometry or blade steel. You can most certainly get away with steeper grinds depending on thickness behind the edge and certainly with 3v since it's very very tough. It's not going to chip. It'll roll or dent before it ever chips. Now a harder steel with high edge retention you may not want to go that steep if it's a thin geometry. It all depends. Lots of variables. I'd say the knife there can take a 15 degree edge all day long. 99% of my knives are all between 15 and 20 degrees. Never more then 20. They are knives. They are meant to cut. They're not splitting mauls for christ sake lol
@BigDaddySwingingMeat3 ай бұрын
13 is the lowest I'd ever go with the sharpening angle on a knife and apparently Buck agrees, all Buck knives are sharpened at 13 to 16 dps. Most of my camping blades are kept at 20 dps. I keep my self defense blades and food prep blades at 13-15 dps depending on the blade.

I have a wakizashi from swamprat/busse thats 3v and some of the test videos are pretty darn impressive. The hrc is 61-63 and the edge is 18 degrees. Yet it can go through cinder blocks, 3/8 nail, chop wood and bone and most crazy in my opinion. Bend 90 degrees without taking a set. And then 180 degrees and although it does bend and stay bent im honestly shocked it didnt just explode 😂
