EV West isn't like other electric car builders. They aren't trying to save the planet from gasoline emissions, they are trying to build race cars using electric technology for events that can best use that technology. The Pikes Peak International Hillclimb, with a total driving distance of under 20 miles at very high elevation, is one of those events. We take their Pike's Peak M3 to the dyno to find out what 400 Kilowatts means in Horsepower, then to see how it drives.

I don't understand that guy's complaint about the engine noise with regards to racing. Going to a race track to watch cars do laps is technically a mind-numbing experience, I don't care what noises the engines make. Yes, and for most people who LIKE cars a HUGE part of the fun is listening to an engine scream at high rpm's, the feel the mechanical marvel of pistons and connecting rods reciprocating like a sewing machine 100 times per second. It gives you goose bumps. Hearing the exhaust note sing. Gliding around a track in a silent car hearing the tires squealing is not exactly the same thrill...and like he said, "it's a lot faster than it feels!"...the thrill is FEELING like you're going fast, not actually going fast. Also, "409's" were only used in a very few certain large Chevy cars for a few years in the early 60's. The few remaining cars are collectors items now and don't see much track time. I don't think listening to "dat 409" is an issue for 99.99% of people.

The idea behind developing electrics for performance is that battery weight, while currently significantly higher than an ICE setup, will inevitably go much lower if there is consumer demand for the research thereof. We have had over a century developing ICE motors; this is relatively new mass produced tech. Give it just a decade. You'll be amazed.

As far as motors go, electrics generally win performance-wise over ICE in almost every way. Right now the problem with electric is the power storage. Current battery technology _sucks_ compared to the amount of energy in fossil fuel. I get the dislike for lack of engine noise, etc but the fact is, if energy storage improves enough (light weight, more power) then I believe we will reach a point to where if you want to win races you will need to be electric. Younger generations will probably even grow to love whatever sounds those cars make better than the old ICE powered vehicles.
@_droid
@_droid 9 жыл бұрын
***** Which is what I said. Read my comment again carefully. As I said, power storage is the limiting factor with electric motors and why they can't match the energy (ie. performance) in fossil fuels. Current batteries are too heavy and hold too little power. This isn't a limitation of electric motor themselves though.
@_droid
@_droid 9 жыл бұрын
***** fuel: alcohol, fossil, batteries is all the same. They are an energy storage mechanism. How that energy is applied is what matters and all combustion engines are _way_ less efficient than an electrical motor (more moving parts, combustion losses, etc). Consider typical combustion engines can't even break 40% efficiency at their very best and are generally _much_ worse whereas electric motors can go over 90% using current technology and are lighter. All electric needs is a superior energy storage mechanism and combustion will be dead (whether or not that will ever happen, I don't know).

There is a difference between sports cars, and race cars. Race cars, it doesn't matter what the driver likes, it matters what makes him faster, to you and me, in a sports car, the fun is a very big factor. A standard manual will always be more fun and engaging. But that doesn't mean faster. Driving enthusiast will NOT like losing that. Note, some of the fastest street cars, are not the most fun street cars.
@joedockstader1347
@joedockstader1347 7 жыл бұрын
"The added weight limits breaking and corning ability, period." What you fail to understand is that electric cars do not necessarily have to be heavier than their gas equivalents. The main cause for the misconception of "inevitable weight addition" has generally come from the fact that batteries have had a much lower energy density than gasoline. However, that fails to take into account the fact that your average gas engine has 20% thermal efficiency, maxing out around 30%. Electric motors are much more efficient, significantly reducing the amount of total stored energy you need to carry, not to mention the weight reduction in the drive-train that electric power allows. (or the fact that modern electric motors have better power/weight ratios than any gasoline engine could ever achieve). In fact, even with current-gen technology using Li-ion batteries that have lower energy density than gasoline, if you have two full drive systems (gas tank/battery all the way to wheels) with the same power and range, you see two things between the two: first, the electric system will have roughly twice the torque of the otherwise equivalent gas system. Second, the electric system (remember, we're talking battery all the way to wheels) will actually weigh slightly LESS than the equivalent gas system, and that's with current technology. There are many battery chemistries currently going into test production that actually have better power density than gasoline. I AGREE that added weight limits cornering and braking ability, but what you don't seem to understand is that electric cars do not have to necessarily, or even generally weigh more than their gas equivalents. Your argument would have made sense in 2003, but not anymore. Sorry.

Countries that want to move forward from Oil dependence better move fast before there is no money to invest towards EV's. Electric vehicles should be subsidized by governments to make up for lagging technologies until systems progress. If we get trapped by peak oil the Middle class will disappear.

love the idea of electric cars not because I care about the environment, honestly I dont give a shit. But having a silent car with instant torque and no fuel bill is something awesome. But how would these electric motors work with transmissions? when you shift and let off the gas the rpm drops to 0 instantly which wouldnt end well when the clutch is released
@phillipzx3d
@phillipzx3d 10 жыл бұрын
You don't really need a transmission when you have 500+ lb. ft of torque from zero RPM. :-) The White Zombie (an electric Datsun 1200) does 0-60 mph in 1.8 seconds and the 1/4 mile in 10.2 (or.4...I forget) seconds...Anyhow, no transmission. You could always use an automatic. A small motor could drive the pump. :-) The Yasa-750 is a 60 pound motor that's about 13" in diameter, and about 4 " thick. This thing puts out 500 lb.ft. of torque....60 POUNDS in weight!

I believe they use 2 11 inch series wound dc warp11 motors with two evnetics controllers capable of 1000 amps each. They built it for pikes peak and won 50th overall. It is fast. The air cleaners blow cool clean air on the brushes and through the motor.

When did he "insult" it? HE compliments the excellent work and engineering. All he says is that he PERSONALLY "isn't sure" if he likes the idea of an electric race car, just because HE doesn't feel like it's fun. He doesn't say it's a bad idea, or that it's slow, or that the car isn't well designed....he is talking about electric cars in general, and as the host of a show for gearheads, about the best he dared say about about it is that "he'll have to think about how he feels about it", because a lot of his audience is very against electric cars. If you consider what he said "insulting", I'm glad I don't have to hang out with you.

Electric cars may become more "popular" with road going cars. But over all, gas cars will never become extent. 1. Fuel is a monopoly. 2. monopoly again
@str3tchr
@str3tchr 9 жыл бұрын
If you are talking about "gas" as gasoline from crude oil, yes they will eventually become extinct, which I think is what you meant. I am having trouble understanding your use of extent here. 1. Eventually it will run out. 2. When it runs out we will have no more. 3. Since we will have no more no more cars will be able to be powered by it 4. Gas powered cars will become extinct - at least to the extent that they are no longer a viable alternative to 99% of human transportation

Theoretically: Yes. Practically: Those are Brushless DC Motors. Usual DC motors commutate (change the internal winding Polarity to continue rotation) using coal "brushes" which makes contact to a slotted ring on the rotor. With every partial rotation, the polarity is changed. That's why 2 cables are enough. Brushless motors don't have brushes (duh), but 3 Terminals and also 3 windings. They can't commutate by themselves, thus you need a second piece of hardware for measurement and commutation.

Strange thing is, we in Europe uses kilowatts for measuring engine's power for decades now... 66kW/90hp, 74kW/100hp, 81kW/110hp, 96kW/130hp, 110kW/150hp, 150kW/200hp etc...

You're absolutely right! But the 400 kW is referring to pure electrical energy. But when you factor in the voltage drop thru the controller, the DC motor's 85% efficiency and what ever the drive train loss is… yeah, I can see about 350hp to the wheels.

Destruction of gearbox internals due to an electrics near instantaneous application of torque is more of an issue for DC motors unless you get creative with the controllers. Most OEM manufacturers are going with 3-phase AC motors which are inductively coupled (no brushes), and can allow for soft start. AC technology allows for altering the voltage-amperage phase relationships to mimic the slower torque onset of a gasoline engine. However, AC typically requires a much more complex controller.

Altitude does effect electric motors. Specifically brushed motors such as this one. But not nearly as much as it effects combustion engines. At higher altitudes, air becomes more conductive and therefore can cause problems. But Im sure this will only be noticeable at very high altitudes (relatively) such as 15,000 ft +
@Phrew
@Phrew 11 жыл бұрын
Well, to be entirely correct, the torque drops with rising temperature of the engine. This is why cooling is essential. Also you can't have infinite power as for physical/design limitations. You will have loss due to friction, your engine's RPM can't go infinite and stuff like that. So yes, you are right, the curve will start to drop at some point. What i meant is, that the curve doesn't start at a very low level like on combustion engines.

Reminds me of my first brushless rc car. It was fast as hell and had enough low end torque to make the car do backflips from a stop, but nothing beat the experience of the nitro engines ive come to love. This car is cool and all, but they added weight to a track car. Now when they go to the track, they can only run a few laps before having to call it a day to recharge their battery. (Unless the battery is removable, in which case they swap out their 10k$ batteries for another hour of fun)

Props to EV West for developing such a car. No doubt it's a great effort. Personally I just can't enjoy such a car though. The speed factor from all that torque is nice, but I'd be more happy with all the sounds that a gas motor and exhaust make despite it being less torque and possibly slower. It's the whole experience and sense of occasion that is lacking with this kind of car. Sorry, I guess i'm set on my old-school ways. Perhaps hardcore racers looking for ultimate speed will absolutely love a car like this.

Yes I do want to see electric race cars. Everything must evolve and adapt. As much as I love cars and engines, the next step for us will be alternative fuel sources. Electricity being one of them , I think it will be amazing to see what we can REALLY do with electric cars. Because as they said, the fastest way to improve a car is by racing. But perhaps I'm saying this because I'm an engineer.
