Book Of Demons nearly ended up like this, but then they ended just releasing a second game instead, as the scope creep was extremely strong, even though the main game felt fairly bare bones, compared to what it could have been.

Conceptually, this is probably one of the better ways to expand in chess. It's still close enough to the fundamentals of chess and you could theoretically just stick to one faction and master that. There's no modern game-isms like exp and skill trees, no rng, no deckbuilding or any other gacha lootbox bs that people just accept because at least you're not spending real money to have a chance to get the shiny ultramega queen.
