I actually do have some minor aerospace engineering experience, and to be honest... this seems like an actually fairly sensible design. There definitely could be something I'm missing, but it seems like it would be something that, with some computer automation, would actually be relatively easy to control. It's effectively a quadcopter during take-off, and then transitions to have some vertical lift which allows more efficient use of the thrust than staying in a quadcopter configuration. It seems pretty feasible to me. Still impractical though just on the fact that actually flying a plane is sort of the easy part of the things involved in flying a plane, so a somewhat easier to fly plane would not really make things a lot more regular consumer-accessible. They would still need a lot of training.

I remember reading that the ducts themselves provided most of the lift during forward flight. The wing was mostly for control and did not provide much of the lift during forward flight. It used elevons for control like a flying wing. You should have added small wing pieces to the ducts.
@codygaming1812 жыл бұрын
I was gonna say, in the irl video it shows that the intake are not 90 degrees when taking off, and at a part of the animation it shows that the rear of the duct is not horizontal, but slightly angled showing it still used the thrust to have lift.

4 combustion turbojet engines take metric tons of fuel, you really only need 1 or 2 and direct thrust downwards, even STOL is much more efficient.
@markjacobson42482 жыл бұрын
I actually suspect that, if it were completed, it could go a lot longer than that. It would certainly be less efficient than a regular light airplane, but it's pretty typical for a 4-seat general aviation plane to be able to fly for 3-5 hours with full cargo weight limit, and get a range of 300+ miles. Nicer ones can exceed 500 miles on a tank with about 500-600 pound total carrying capacity while fully fueled. Of course, these planes run a cool $250,000+ price tag. Back of the envelope type calculations, but I think it would be reasonable for this concept to get at least half that range with the same carrying capacity. Edit: Removed incorrect musings about engine type and all.
@markjacobson42482 жыл бұрын
@@daanoffline5716 the original design isn't for turbojets. They're just ducted propellers. This is actually a perfect choice for this type of system, as they're more efficient at lower speeds and lower altitude than turbojets or turbofans are. It's why still to this day brand new planes with only a few passenger capacity are propeller planes.

Plz can you make a The Welte-Mignon: "The master himself...his own fingers at your keyboard" The Welte-Mignon was a twist on the player pianos that existed in the early 1900s - pianos that played pre-recorded music using automated cylinders. While most player pianos emphasized the music, Welte-Mignons emphasized the actual performance. Famous pianists could sit down at a Welte-Mignon and play songs, and then the piano would "record" their performance on rolls. People could then take the rolls, put them in their home Welte-Mignon, and listen to the exact same performance.

Personal flying "cars" are extremely costly and inefficient for both manufacturer and buyer, because constantly fighting gravity whilst trying to stabilise the vehicle is an engineering pain in the 4ss. It's easy in the big planes with high speed and big wings and also more efficient because you can build it once and use it for 20 years, and one flight brings a lot of people.

Jupiter is primarily composed of hydrogen, but helium constitutes one-quarter of its mass and one-tenth of its volume. It likely has a rocky core of heavier elements,[16] but, like the other giant planets, Jupiter lacks a well-defined solid surface. The ongoing contraction of its interior generates heat greater than the amount received from the Sun. Because of its rapid rotation, the planet's shape is an oblate spheroid; it has a slight but noticeable bulge around the equator. The outer atmosphere is visibly segregated into several bands at different latitudes, with turbulence and storms along their interacting boundaries. A prominent result of this is the Great Red Spot, a giant storm known to have existed since at least the 17th century when telescopes first saw it. Surrounding Jupiter is a faint planetary ring system and a powerful magnetosphere. Jupiter's magnetic tail is nearly 800 million km (5.3 AU; 500 million mi) long, covering nearly the entire distance to Saturn's orbit. Jupiter has 80 known moons and possibly many more,[6] including the four large Galilean moons discovered by Galileo Galilei in 1610: Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. Io and Europa are about the size of Earth's Moon; Callisto is almost the size of the planet Mercury, and Ganymede is even larger. Pioneer 10 was the first spacecraft to visit Jupiter, making its closest approach to the planet in December 1973.[17] Jupiter has since been explored on several occasions by robotic spacecraft, beginning with the Pioneer and Voyager flyby missions from 1973 to 1979, and later by the Galileo orbiter, which arrived at Jupiter in 1995.[18] In 2007, the New Horizons visited Jupiter using its gravity to increase its speed, bending its trajectory en route to Pluto. The latest probe to visit the planet, Juno, entered orbit around Jupiter in July 2016.[19][20] Future targets for exploration in the Jupiter system include the probable ice-covered liquid ocean of Europa.[21].
