2:50 I think he just slipped up a bit here, but there was never a welded hull version of the M4A1 for it to be have A1 in its designation it had to have a cast hull My guess is the welded hull Sherman he pointed to is either a large hatch M4A2 or M4A3 with the 75mm gun

It's more likely to be an M4, since the M4 and M4A1 share the same engine, but the engine deck or rear isn't shown, so I can't tell. It's not an M4A4 since no large hatch M4A4s exist
@moomoo77062 ай бұрын
@@Pte.Fletcher I looked it up on their website. The welded hull Sherman in the video is "SCHMUEL" an M4A3 (75)W from Fisher Body. Fisher made their M4 sprocket wheels solid (Ford's had holes in them). None of the producers of standard M4's made M4A3s (other than Chrysler but only for 105 and 76 versions) though their is a lot of overlap with companies that made M4A2s. I haven't seen any pictures of a large hatch standard M4 (75) so I'd assume they are very rare.

@@moomoo7706 Ah, fair enough. I couldn't get a good look at it since I was travelling while watching on my phone, and didn't have time to do that extra research. I just thought it was an M4 since I assumed they were getting confused because of the engine.

I filmed a short documentary for a college project with an M4 (105) which belongs to Armourgeddon Tank Museum that was used in Fury. In the background of the scene where the crew are talking to the new guy in the camp, you can only just see it. It served post-war, was used as a target on a molotov cocktail range and then was restored by Armourgeddon about 14 years ago. Their M8 was also on the Fury set, and I've seen it before, but it wasn't on display when I went to film (or I just couldn't find it)

1:54 I got a really good question on them securing the Sherman’s on flatbeds, why are they using a nylon rope to secure the barrel when there’s a gun travel lock that they are flat out wrapping the rope around. The only excuse I could accept is to avoid scratching the paint of the barrel.
@WW2Armor2 ай бұрын
Reasonable question! Yes, there is absolutely a functional travel lock on that tank. It still works, but it's about 80 years old, and we know full well how things can fail. WW2 Armor is a very risk-averse organization, and we strive to ensure we operate and maintain these beasts as safely as possible. We implement redundancies like this to make sure we don't cause any undue harm or mayhem!

the 105 could disable a Tiger with a well placed HE round (basically artillery) also the 105mm cannon had a HEAT round that was pretty good at going through armor so I'm sure that could do some damage too

Sherman can kill tiger and panther, unfortunately lot of people still mock and insult this tank, even if you debate in social media they will laugh to you 😢
@uraigroves78982 ай бұрын
Yes but they rarely did. The German tanks went thru the Sherman's like a knife thru butter. Stats prove this.
@frankpolly2 ай бұрын
@@uraigroves7898 stats also prove that Sherman crews didn't fight tigers as much as people think. Stats also prove other german tank models like the Pz4 and Stug3 were far more common to fight which the Sherman can defeat. Stats also prove the tigers had a lesser readiness ratio. Stats also prove the Sherman took a lot less time to maintain. Oh the tiger has an 88mm gun, how cool. Just add a bunch extra steel to the Sherman, create the Sherman Jumbo and the tiger and panther had trouble getting through it. meanwhile the Jumbo Sherman would still have all the benefits of crew comfort, the short stabelizer, the easy maintanance and ammo stored under the floor like all Shermans would have starting early '44. The Tiger gun argument also kind of falls short when you realise the only driving tiger today was disabled by a shot that barely penetrated but still knocked out the turret ring. There is a reason the US started killing Tigers with the 75mm by firing HE at it. Penetration of a tank gun is one of the least important factors, especially for the US who's doctrine is to use tank destroyers for tank on tank engagements and to use frontline tanks for infantry support.
@uraigroves78982 ай бұрын
@@frankpolly no one said tigers were common. The quote was Sherman's "kicked the German tanks asses"...I'm saying they didn't in any general sense. Sone Sherman's knocked out some German tanks but the kill ratios were always in the Germans favor except in a few battles in late 44 in lorainne and parts of the bulge. You mention drugs and those actually killed more tanks than any other,crap on Russia. Again, the Russians lost 100,000 tanks on the eastern front and those losers included Sherman's. The Sherman was a good all around tank but not close to being the best.

@frankpolly2 ай бұрын
Yeah because google still needs to update from the time when everyone was praising soviet tanks. The T-34 had a ton of issues, most of them from cheap and fast production during the war. The original design was amazing back in 1934-1935, but war time production meant that the T-34 was often rolled out of the factory with missing parts like missing seats, turret baskets, ammo storage bins, headlights, machine guns, sights etc. The wartime welding was also very poor as the welding was done by a lot of unskilled civilians meaning that even if the T-34 deflected an anti-tank round, the pressure of the round hitting the armor could break off entire armor plates. There is a ton of information out there about the T-34, however a lot of it comes from pre 1991 when sources on the T-34 during WW2 were unreliable as it came from the Soviet Union and was often very biased. The answer google gives you is really simple while the real answer is very nuanced.
