I swear to God endeavor, has probably some of the best character development in any anime. The idea of giving an abuser a redemption arc seems so wrong in concepts, through the execution, nuance of the situation and realistic reactions and perspective of everyone involved in the situation, turns it into a real, compelling, and emotionally powerful set of circumstances. Phenomenal job.

I think the problem is Endeavor actually recognizes what he did wrong and is trying change. Everyone around him sees that and wants him to make that transformation, but he’s detaching himself because he sees that as the only way to give them peace, but nothing will give HIM peace or his FAMILY peace until he can finally face them all. I think a lot of people, including myself, have had/have similar issues to this show’s family messages and issues. And unfortunately a lot of people don’t ever recognize themselves as the problem and convince themselves of any other possibility before they themselves make the change…I really envy Todoroki, it takes a lot to have someone make a complete 180 and it rarely ever happens. And in the end you still love the family member or the IDEA of who they are (their best self deep down) but they never change, and never apologize admitting to their own faults, because that’s all most people want. A recognition and effort to change.

The author has said that he has changed how the series was going from when he first started. There are a lot of examples. The first two hero movies are plots he thought for the ending of the whole series. Endeavor's fight with the nomu may have given us a hint of what he thought when he first made the character. Endeavor makes a comment about how the nomu reminds him of himself and how it could have been him from a different timeline But making his story of atonement is so much better but so scary, I can imagine to make that decision

Y’know, bad nights and trauma aside, it was really cool seeing how much Shoto and his friends have improved. They quite literally passed Endeavor. On the subject of Endeavor though, credit where it’s due, it’s nice that he’s accepted that he’ll probably never truly live everything down. That being said, his promise of atoning is kinda weird to me since there’s really not much he can really do beyond buying the house so the family could heal without him. It’s weird, while I genuinely believe that Endeavor feels bad, it’s also kinda... hard for me to care? It’s all just too little too late for me, and it’ll probably take a lifetime’s worth of atonement before he proves anything, let alone before I really start look at him any differently.
@grantharriman284 Жыл бұрын
I'd say the part that really matters is what the decision to get them a house and NOT move there himself says about how Endeavor thinks and feels. It shows that he understands what he has done to them and that he understands what he represents in their lives, the intense and extremely negative emotions they each have connected to him. That and the fact the he apparently did this of his own initiative reveals how deeply this has affected his own thought process that he is thinking about this unprompted.

@@grantharriman284 I mean, that makes sense, but I can’t exactly give him credit for feeling that way. It's hilarious to me how many people talk about Endeavor being "unforgivable" when the super hero genre is full of characters who have been redeemed after lives of true villainy. Maybe people struggle to be objective because everything has been framed through the viewpoint of Shoto and Natsuo but Endeavor really isn't all that different from pageant parents or the parents of an Olympic hopeful athlete. Which is not meant to excuse the way he treated his family but he's not some inhuman monster. He's a profoundly heroic man who is deeply flawed.

I just want to talk about how hilariously Endeavor handled this. He doesn’t save his son, immediately hugs him (knowing he doesn’t even like being in the same room as Endeavor), and then immediately makes a speech about his trauma while in the middle of the road, not even a minute after he got kidnapped and almost died. Themes and narratives are something else entirely, but realistically, my god did he handle this badly! 😂
@TheJeSTeR7530 Жыл бұрын
The entire scene happened in just a moment of real time, so Endeavor only really hesitated for a couple of seconds at most, and by then the situation was already resolved. That entire aspect was not to show how badly Endeavor handled it (although for a hero he did hesitate too much), but to show that just through a moment of hesitation, the three students had learned what Endeavor had taught them and were able to surpass him in that moment... I also think that it is very understandable that Endeavor hesitated for a second there, he saw his son not just be in danger, but in the hands of a villain willing to kill him if Endeavor didn't comply... in that moment of hesitation he wasn't really Endeavor, he was Enji Todoroki, a father who was frozen in fear for the life of his son. Yes, he hesitated too much and handled it badly, but i think its also very understandable why he would hesitate, and just that little hesitation is what let Deku, Shoto and Bakugo surpass the number 1 hero. What came afterwards is different issue, talking with Natsuo right there in the middle of the street may have been a bit weird, but then again... the story gotta keep moving, we can't linger on this one plot hook for forever, so i think thats fine to suspend your disbelief for a bit longer.
@CallMeSpinner Жыл бұрын
@@TheJeSTeR7530 Last part, yeah totally. I get it’s meant to be dramatic, but looking at it realistically makes Endeavor look pretty bad. And for the first bit, I know why he froze up, but the implication is that if the students weren’t there then Natsuo probably would’ve died. So it’s not just an issue with him as a hero who saves people for a living, it’s also an issue with him as a father who can’t physically bring himself to help his son. I would probably be more understanding if he was simply just scared/frozen in fear, but there’s also the moment after where he tries to explain why he hesitated, which to be fair, isn’t as dwelled on in the sub.

Deku in my opinion just became the most powerful student as of this juncture. The only thing I’ve seen more complex than his manual Blackwhip catch of 4 cars that weren’t even all in sight the whole time, all in the time it took him to jump ONCE, is Inasa Yoarashi’s 360 perfect shot whirlwind over a city block. And he’s the only person with arguably more skill than people like Shoto and the other student front runners. I’d say Deku is on equal skill level to Inasa if not greater by now considering what he’s moderating in that moment effortlessly. We’re reaching the juncture where Deku’s sheer OFA development is going to be REALLY hard for any one person in the SERIES to keep up with. (I don’t really count the Big 3, because those 3 are just pros by this point.)

@@In-The-Zone well I deliberately said I didn’t count the Big 3 who I consider pretty high tier pro heroes as is. Aizawa said Mirio was the closest to achieving number 1 including pros. He may be out of commission here, but he still matched Overhaul with NO quirk for 5 minutes, and that’s A. 2 minutes longer than a boxing round, and B. His opponent could molecularly deconstruct and reconstruct whatever he touches in a flash. And he SURVIVED. As for Inasa, the reason I say Deku is likely around his control level is because Inasa might be making hundreds of wind currents at once, but if he makes a general shape for it all it’s easier to process, and he had several minutes to think about his big moves in that arc. Deku was processing his stockpile moderation at several levels, switching uses, changing quirks, and again, MANUALLY wrapping up cars AND stabilizing them upright that weren’t even in his field of vision in the time he takes to jump. There was zero time to make a plan which can’t be said about Inasa. We haven’t seen Inasa forced to improvise outside his team up with Todoroki.
