You want some good thick clay to line the bottom of the pond with and if the pond can be bigger that would help to and does it have to be trout in there or could it be an assortment of different species like bass cat fish crappie pitch and if it were me I'd line it with stone to in different places to gif the fish more of a habitat beds like

I think if it was a compacted clay bottom it would stay cleaner and the water inlet if that was flowing better probably would help to

To keep a clean pond and also to cycle the water, you need to semi tarp the bottom of the pond. Put those rubber mats and poke holes into them or leave small parts open and major parts sealed with tarp. This way pond will not dirt up but also maintain the water table and interact with the earth's micronutrients

Chris I love the relationship advice!! 😂 I been with my wife 23 years going on 24 and I am only 41 . We got married in August 2001 so I been married to her for 21 years. Once your together past that 20 year mark nothing matters anymore because we are so used to one another that we think a like and if she disagrees about something I just give it back to her and eventually we both win. Now if you want some alone time with her she is always right and you gotta smooth it over and make the runway ready to land the plane .😂💯 To be honest I don't know to many people that can say they been with someone that long , yet alone married to them. I guess I got lucky and so did she. Great video bud and glad to see you still making videos.👍💪🙏 Happy holidays to you and your family Chris.

I dunno about your fish, but my backyard pond koi hibernate during winter. They look frozen since they don't move, but they are still alive. You're not supposed to feed them as it gets colder as it prevents them from hibernating and is more harmful to them.
@RustyGoose
@RustyGoose Жыл бұрын
Hey guy, I actually met you at Lyndon when you first came by a few years ago. Looks like you have a pretty major dissolved oxygen issue. A small pond like that with little to no water turnover is bad news for trout. Catfish would love that, they don’t need the same oxygen or water quality requirements that trout do. Alternatively you need a MUCH larger aerator. If the pond freezes over it’s likely not aerating enough for the trout in such a small pond. They won’t eat hardly at all at very cold temperatures, and feeding excessively in winter will do much more harm than good. If the oxygen is as poor as it sounds, they Will definitely not feed even if the water is warm. Also, if the fish is dead already, don’t risk eating it lol.

Brooke and cutthroat do better in ponds than rainbows, make a worm box outside, you have enough materials laying around. Fish will thaw out and swim away in the spring, the one you chopped out of the ice looks like it died because it was belly up.

Could add native pond plants, which would help with oxygenation, I don't keep pond fish but used to keep cold water fish in aquariums, but plants can help with oxygenation. It may be you already had them and they died back in the cold though, also a backup power source like wind, I know you can get small turbines, but not sure how much power you'd get. @avidhunter6169

I agree with you Russell, as long as they smell okay and are properly cooked to then they should be perfectly fine and safe to eat. I personally would also go by taste. If you are still not sure or if the taste seems a off, you can always dice it up finely, add a little cooked rice and feed it to your dog most dogs can eat road kill and be fine so as long as the fish is cooked to 145 °F for at least 3 minutes all of the bacteria will be dead and then it is just a matter of taste. If your dog likes the taste it'll be fine. At the worst grind it up and compost it for fertilizer. No need to waste it.

Whoa! First, you don't feed fish if the water temperature is 50 degrees or less. The fish cannot digest the food and it will rot in their gut and may kill them. Fish eat very little in the winter and they can find enough naturally occuring food in the pond. They stopped eating because they got cold. Second, if the pond is frozen over, do not crack the ice! It will concous the fish and may kill them. Draining the pond will give you the opportunity to expand it and add sand and rock or a liner to help with the silt issue. I would consider a filtration system, but I have a large backyard pond and not a natural pond as you have.
