I thoroughly enjoy these in-depth real time diagnosis videos. They help me tremendously is my own diagnostic process at work, great content as always! Would love to see more engine performance diagnosis as well in the future using O2's and fuel trims!

Great video Sherwood and crew! I learn something new every time! Hopefully the customer installs some good quality injectors, have had so many lately come in with issues with new cheap injectors! Had one a few months ago with extremely negative fuel trims and the customer just installed a 80 dollar set of Amazon injectors, new ones cured the problem. I always try to use OE if available. Bought a set of Standard Motor Products a while back and they were re-boxed Chrysler injectors..

Yeah, we've seen how the "do it yourself" repairs go ....just had an 07 Navigator. Cust replaced all the coils and plugs themselves and attempted to wire in two new coil and 1 injector pigtails. All the heat shrink work looked good, but the crimps weren't worth a crap and they broke the locking tabs on two other coils and injectors so they wouldn't stay plugged in. I wound up having to replace two more coil and injector pigtails and resolder everything they tried to crimp.

i have one of the older scanners that did the test by each cylinder where you could see fuel pressure drop on each cylinder i like that test better because you can show customer injector 1 only dropped 20 psi injector 5 only 2 psi clearly 2 is stopped up makes it easier for customer to understand. i also have a buzz box but not worth much when injectors are covered up like on the 3.6 dodge and some of the fords

@ minute 7:30. You said, 'If you take off idle and it corrects itself, then we know it is a vacuum leak.' I'm 100% sure. Also, if you have a bad injector or injectors and take off idle, it will correct itself too. This just happened to me with my 2002 Toyota RAV4 three days ago.

I think you are on the right path of injector problems. Once you have the intake out of the way you can do more testing on the injectors to verify. Thank you for this video,it was very informative to me. And yes Chevy has a nice injector flow test you can do with a manual fuel pressure tester. I believe the test you did in the injectors compares how much flow drops fuel pressure in a given amount of time.
@KStewart-th4skАй бұрын
Apparently, you missed it somehow or didn't watch the video through to the end. He isn't taking the intake out of the way because the customer wants to change injectors himself.

I struggled to diagnose an entire bank misfiring on my 07 Dodge Ram 1500 for months. It had strong spark in all coils, good compression, good fuel pressure, all new spark plugs. Eventually, just for shits and giggles I put my finger on the cylinder 2 fuel injector and couldn't feel a definitive pulse. I did the same with other injectors and felt an obvious tick. The #2 injector had been replaced while I was trying to figure out a no start condition. Good thing I kept the old injector, because I put it back in, and the lean condition and entire bank misfiring went away. The new injector was no good, and it was starving the other cylinders of fuel. She purrs like a kitten now.
@ihavethedocuments2580Ай бұрын
New injectors can be defective right out of the box depending on where you get it. I see techs complain about this too.
@Jethu262Ай бұрын
@@ihavethedocuments2580 yep, I learned a LOT trying to figure out the issue...first and foremost....new doesn't always mean good...second, it isn't always the obvious solution. I was looking at a lean condition, but didn't think it would be due to an injector that was stuck open.

Good read on the failing injector, and with age of vehicle, best advice would be to replace set. One question though: Assuming this is a port fuel injected V-6 ( and mileage/age) , how much possible impact would any fuel deposits on intake port/valves have to with cylinder to cylinder/overall performance in this case?

Would have been a great one to show the tailpipe misfire analyzer on the escope (iea). The other thing is if fuel trims are being corrected it shouldn't actually be running lean since the trims are not maxed out. Might have been able to see it under a snap throttle better.
@rodvan-zeller6360Ай бұрын
I look at tail pipe lambda reading, if lambda is 1 +or- 2% there is no fuel control issue.

Wouldnt it been easier to do a cylinder power balance test see the weak cylinder? Maybe amp clamp the injectors and look at the pintle bump and see if one sticks out from the rest?
@jeremyalbert2069Ай бұрын
Look at the basics , first , compression , good , contribution, misfiring all over the place , check fuel pressure, is air filter restricted , skewing maf ? Is it low on oil/ oil very dirty ? Changes variable valve timing ! Make it run rough . Is the egr sticking open at low speeds ? Might see a lean condition if that's happening ? Is intake leaking ? Smoke it . Ohm out injectors , common for them to fail on that engine , pull plugs and look at them, . Start with basics first , then move on

forgot to say great job i always pick up some pointers from each video. I do have something i would like to run by you have customer with jeep ac leak the only place i can get buzzer to go off is transmission dipstick hole. that being said top portion of condensor is transmission cooler bottom is condensor it it possible to have a pinhole where letting freon pass. the only way we found it was this jeep doesn't have stick you have to use test stick and scanner to check temp while checking a/c customer said while we are checking would like to get me to check trans fluid the other tech was still checking for leakes when i screwed out the plug on the trans filler tube the leak dector was fairly close to it was checking fittings to firewall tester went wild closed tube and leake dector stopped but the two systems are tied together in the condensor never heard of this before. we checked another jeep at shop it didn't do it i will video if i get the job

Sherwood I think you could have saved some time identifying the cylinder in question faster by throwing a pulse sensor in the exhaust (like the first look sensor but I’ve had plenty of success with my cheap Rotkee pulse sensor) and then scoping a sync ignition on whatever COP is easy to get to. I’ve had tremendous success with this method. You’ll notice on the pulse sensor that the cylinder in question that is misfiring will cause a steep drop in the pulse sensor waveform. You can do it with the WPS500 one its sensitive setting too but I know you’re not a pico guy and the WPS is overkill when a $20 pulse sensor works fine. Let me know if I can explain it better. This is effectively the dollar bill test but with actual data. Also if you need a download for a piston overlay software to line up the cylinder strokes with the ignition sync, I have an app I wrote that’s on my channel. It’s free and I wrote it for myself to use and shared on the AutoNerdz forum. I’m just a DIY guy with old cars who hates when stuff is diagnosed wrong so I’m in too deep now. Love your channel. Also if you want me to send you a picture with notes on it to show you what I mean, I have a case study of this exact diagnosis on a 2003 Honda pilot with bad injector flow on cylinder 5. Somehow fuel trim didn’t show the misfire because of both banks having only 1 upstream o2. Had to get fancy haha. I can send the waveforms and all. Just let me know

Sherwood quick question for ya only because I’m a rookie at the scope so because cyl 5 waveform was showing lean but not crazy lean tell you that the injector was firing just not delivering enough fuel? I have a habit of overthinking and going down rabbit holes and would have checked for injector pulse
