Former Reserve Mining SD9 Nearly Hits Truck Running A Railroad Crossing Downtown!

I filmed this train across quite a few crossings Wednesday, including downtown Iron Mountain, MI where multipal vehicles blew through the railroad crossings in front of the train.. Many years ago the FRA outlawed no horn zones unless the crossings had four quadrant gates. The FRA allowed cities to apply for a waiver to this rule and the FRA granted Iron Mountain a waiver due to the low speed of the trains and the few in number. I chased Escanaba and Lake Superior Railroad ELS 1221 and ELS 502 north to Granite Bluff, MI where other railfans were waiting too.

TV stations would pay you for the footage of some fool getting slammed by the train and you would be the only one with film to document how it all went down.

1221 sure has turned out to be a crowd-pleaser, the Mars light on the front is on!, maybe not gyrating, but its on! Even without a front snowplow, the 1221 can still mangle a vehicle at a crossing! Great video!, THANKS JASON❗

@@BudmanPackfan yep!, the upper road headlight is out, i noticed that the first video that Jason posted of 1221. But, even if all the lights were on & working, there would still be Iron Mountain drivers trying to get creamed/cremated by the train.

Great video, Jason. Unfriendly railfans gives a bad name to watching trains. Also that pick-up truck and trailer, Driver lost his mind and almost his life. But the best part of the video, that 1955 engine 1221, powerful engine. One final touch to your video and one of my favorite parts are your birds, love that action. Here in our Town of Smithfield, NC we live next to the woods and feed birds and small critters, plus deer all the time. Best part is how the hummingbirds come right up to me, and so do some of the sparrows and feed squirrels right out of my hands, raw peanuts, Jason, Have a great weekend.

From satellite view on GE, just a single track double ended siding. Centerbeams in/out of plant on north end. Roundwood offloaded on the south end. There are also double ended sidings at Sagola and Randville where cars for LP are sometimes stored. maps.app.goo.gl/ebE6DSo6Cp9qXKoH7

Nice to see so many foamers foaming at the mouth taking pictures of the old trains their in Iron Mountain, MI. In my are we have just had the Old Colony railroad put back into service. Mass Coastal rail is running original passenger cars from the early 1930's and early diesel first generation Baldwins EM-2's pulling their original passenger cars on the weekends up from New York, NY.

To answer your question Yes I like it when all of the "other" things that are in and around of the Train are shown, abandoned routes, bridges and the towns that were built by and for the very Trains that we are watching today, great job!

Good morning, Jason. Once again, another great video. Did you ever find out why they brought ELS 1221 SD9 back into service? Not that it matters, but I am curious. I can't believe the crossings in Iron Mountain; those folks are crazy making illegal left turns and dashing out in front the train. Someone is going to get hurt doing this someday. What is up with all the rail fans? I don't think I have seen so many in a single video. I think it's great to see so many people take an interest in the old, but very active rail line. I can't believe you made it to the curve crossing to capture a video. I may have mentioned it before that the curve crossing is one of my favorite spots to record. It is exceptionally awesome when the train comes through the curve when the field is covered in a blanket of snow! It reminds me of home. To answer your question, yes, I like the ride and catching all scenery that is northern Michigan! Sorry to hear the other rail fans are not very friendly, but to each his own. Keep these great videos coming, I look forward to them every week!

And to have so many cars on it, where i usually only see like a hopper and an empty flat bed. Love it
