1up needs to hire you but seriously it's kinda common sense to put solenoids near hands during game play.
@cjcope86422 жыл бұрын
The only thing I would do differently is to mount the solenoids so that the strike plate is struck toward the buttons, not toward the middle of the machine. Otherwise, this is brilliant!
@sil-80nick2 жыл бұрын
While watching the video, I was thinking the same thing about having the solenoids closer to the buttons. But on second watch and going back to my machine, I remembered that the solenoids are actually simulating the flipper's mechanical impact, not the button's impact. So having the solenoids impact as close to the visual flipper as possible will gain the most realistic "feel" of pinball.

All my attention has been on my AGL and I totally missed this mod! I just completed 1 of my 3 1ups and it’s night and day! 1 tip I would give for anyone interested in doing this is use a drill bit to drill holes through plastic casing before screwing it down! I stripped 2 of the screws by not doing this! Thank you for sharing this game changer!!!

Just finished this mod on my AFM. Works perfectly and I noticed a huge improvement. I also took advantage of having the machine opened and cleaned the bezel and the plex inside and out. It really improved the appearance. There was a lot of dust inside the unit and the inside of the plex was dusty too. If you are doing this mod I would recommend a good cleaning...

Did you have any issues with removing that black wood piece? I've spend some serious energy trying to remove it two separate times now and for the life of me can't get that stupid thing out.
@tjwright3 жыл бұрын
Chiming in, I did this yesterday. Only problem I had was with the plugs on the solenoids - one didn't want to unplug and I pulled the socket out with the plug. I thought I had broken it, but once I got the solenoid out I saw that there were two pins still on the board and the plastic socket really doesn't need to be there at all. It does line the plug up for polarity. I was pretty sure I got the polarity screwed up so I experimented with flipping the polarity of both plugs and it didn't seem to make any difference at all, so rest easy knowing if the sockets come out it's no big deal. Good mod, easy enough, and makes a noticeable difference during gameplay.

did this mod just now after receiving my AFM this morning. Between this, the 30 table mod, and the Zen mod to add purchased tables, I am loving this machine. Makes me not regret selling my VPX/FP wide body cabinet. i might buy another to do a full PC VPX mod, but for now I am having a blast on this. Played my best ever game of Medieval Madness tonight. I might try doing something similar with the bumper solenoids, as they are far too soft now.

It appears that you would get even better results, I would say a 95% increase in effectiveness by removing the pieces from the housing all together and mounting them directly to the board. Additionally flipping it in the opposite direction where the head of the striker will be pointing towards the flipper buttons and thus striking the plate closer to where the flipper buttons rest. Additionally even keeping with your same idea here of flipping over the 2 items on the base of the cabinet as well to increase the force from those as well. Having said that removing them from the housing could be even more effective.

Okay so I just did the mod and first of all thank you for showing me this. Second of all here's my feedback.. the placing of the solenoids is critical if they are not placed in the exact correct spot they will bump into the flipper buttons underneath. Also my arcade 1up had a lot of glue when unplugging the solenoids so I had to use a razor blade to cut around to be able to pull it out without damaging it. Again it works great just had to pay a little bit of extra attention to not break anything. Keep up the good work

One other thing, I thought something had gone wrong because the first game I tested was Masters of the Force, and the right button was triggering both solenoids and the left button was only triggering left. I kept flipping the wires around on the solenoid sockets and there was no difference. So I tried a different game and left only did left and right only did right. @Restalgia3 жыл бұрын
Not really for the rear solenoids. Id leave them as is. I mean you could possibly move them farther back since they are meant to respond to the bumpers which are typically further back in the play field, but other than that, id say they are fine. You wouldn't really be able to do much to feel them and have the sounds come from the correct area of the device at the same time.

@Restalgia3 жыл бұрын
I was considering that, and my play a bit with location. The largest obstacle here is the length of the wire coming coming from the controller board limits where you can place them. You can always get an extender or swap the wires but the extra 2 inches of distance would have made more difficult to connect I think.
