Very cool introduction for people who are starting on virtual pinball... One note for you, that may help you in the future. Dont put the dmd or backglass on TOP ot the playfield or to the LEFT... you'll have issues with future upgrades in other type of pinballs like visual pinball, future pinball, and if you use pinup player or popper... negative values are ok with pinball fx or even pinball arcade but you'll have problems with the rest.
@cooltoy3 жыл бұрын
Yea, I'm fully aware of that. But since the main focus was for just the main playfield and the dmd scoreboard in FX3 only for this video I wanted to make it super simple for people. I'll show the other method of having the monitors arranged side by side in other videos where I have the back glass monitor installed and am also running VPX and Future Pinball.

When preparing the stock monitor for the VSDISPLY do you simply remove that existing smaller metal box from the back of the monitor. Any more details around this step would be appreciated. I ordered a mix the parts form this step one video and the the step 2 video for the plunger, accelerometer and button controller. Has anyone documented this process further? Thanks for the great videos!
@cooltoy3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I removed the smaller metal box entirely since I am no longer using the stock PCB that that metal box was housing. The only major details you need to focus on is making sure you ground the applicable ground cable and make sure the LCD controller board isn't touching a conductive source of any kind before you power it on.

Sounds like this is going to be a really fun series of videos to watch! I need more space before buying pinball, but I like the idea of using a PC and changing the back area to a monitor to match the game as opposed to buying multiple VP cabs. I never really took a close look at the DMD before, but I dont understand why they can include something like that without issue on the pinball, yet be so hesitant to confirm inclusion on a Dragon's Lair cab. Hopefully they figure that screen solution out soon. I much rather pay extra for a proper second screen and not possibly using my own, versus getting some deluxe edition that includes another stool or something. Lol. Sidenote; I know you originally started looking at these products just because they were more cool toys (pun intended) for the community, and now you've sort of been given this extra pressure to *immediately* inform the Arcade1up community of any red flag or update you come across lol. I guess it comes with the territory. Hopefully you are still having fun with everything. I appreciate the videos and whatever you decide to present to us when you have the chance to do so.

Can you give me a more in depth tutorial on how to use the VSDisplay with the stock monitor and DMD hookup please? Thank you!

The stock DMD monitor has nothing do with the VSDisplay adapter. You simply need to give power to the DMD monitor and connect it to your pc via an hdmi cable. It’s hard for me to provide any more insight or info as I can’t see how you have things connected on your set up or what you are using
@CrownedOne20003 жыл бұрын
@@cooltoy I have the hdmi cable from my gpu going to the VSDisplay board. It’s detected and working. The hdmi cable from the dmd can’t go on the VSDisplay board as it’s taken. So I would have to run an hdmi cable from the DMD directly to my PC right? In my case, I’d have to use my integrated gpu hdmi since my dedicated gpu only has one hdmi connection. The DMD powers up and turns blue for about 20 seconds then goes black. Windows doesn’t recognize a second monitor. I guess I’m getting confused since you said you left everything stock the way it was plugged into the back going down to the VSDisplay board.

I did this mod yesterday. Your video was really helpful, some of the connections are a bit confusing. The DMD works in Windows, but haven't gotten it to work with the tables yet. I got Pinball FX and FX3. FX3 works really well, but I wanted to play Mandalorian, and that is through FX. I got a bundle of 2 games with FX. The flippers work with one, but not Mandalorian. Definitely still have some more work. I'm conflicted on what to do. Do I take this farther and get the better encoder and upgrade my PC? I would love to upgrade the screen, the stock display is not great. There are so many tutorials out there, the more I look at this stuff, the more I want to do. But...with the stock PCB, everything works. I loaded all 30 tables plus the Zen and Pinball Arcade mod. It's easy. I don't think I will go back to stock, but it's tempting. Just depends how much time, money and effort I want to spend. Edit: I got the flippers in Mandalorian to work. I had already setup Joytokey to work with FX3, and the keys are different in FX. I just went in and set the FX keys to match what I had set for Joytokey. Still don't know why the DMD is displaying my second Windows screen but not the game's DMD. I'll figure it out.

My Marvel machine was a pre production unit sent to me for review purposes. I have no real way of knowing for sure if it was bad luck or a quality issue, since I do not know what may or may not have changed in the manufacturing process when the retail ready units were made.

@@cooltoy No big deal either way. There is an inherent failure rate of all electronics so let's just chalk it up to bad luck. Fortunately, as you proved it's really not that big a deal to upgrade/replace these parts for minimal cost. My guess is that after shipping costs are factored in, that A1up isn't making that much on these units, so it's still a great value overall as a vpin cab that can be modded.

Would you ever put a 32" monitor back in or is the 24" more than enough?
@cooltoy3 жыл бұрын
I’d still probably avoid the 32” monitor because it’s too big to be recessed into the cabinet body

@@cooltoyok gotcha, it was too tight.

Cool modding video! I don’t plan to mod my A1UP pinball but this was still a cool watch! The main reason I don’t plan to mod my A1UP pinball is, when I turn on the machine, I want a streamlined experience. I don’t want a window’s desktop UI, then having to launch Pinball FX with a Bluetooth controller, then exit and properly shutdown the PC through windows again, etc... does this mod or your future mod make it so that you never see a Windows interface or is that inevitable for a PC mod? How long was it before your stock haptics and switches gave out? And also, would A1UP have replaced them? I just got my A1UP about a week ago, and I’m loving it just the way it is, but if the haptics or switches crap out, I’d love to be able to fix them. Sorry for all the questions! Great video, very detailed, good visuals to match, and it’s cool seeing how far people push their mods!

So I just got the marvel 1up machine. The previous owner modded it so I have all the marvel boards, all the Star Wars boards and Williams boards. If I understand you correctly, I would need a pc and a different pcb in order to utilize the stock playfield at 1080 correct? In other words, what is the bare minimum I would need to get 1080 resolution from the stock board and not lose haptics or accelerometer?

cant you do a steamlink and 0 delay encoder so you dont need to buy a standalone pc?

Uh oh...problems less than a month ??? I am a little worried about my AFM pre order now. Did A1UP warranty the parts with replacement parts?
@cooltoy3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t ask for replacement parts because this was a pre production unit sent to me for review purposes. I could have easily asked for replacement parts and I’m sure they would have taken care of me. But I didn’t want to take parts away from customers who needed them more than I did, so I never asked.

What specific graphics card are you using in the optiplex? Can it be any GTX 970? It has to have at least 3 video outputs correct? Thanks for the vid...can't wait for the others.

3 if you want to do the additional back glass screen also, only 2 if you just want the scoring LCD and playfield. I'm using a Gigabyte GeForce GTX 1650 D6 OC Low Profile 4GB graphics card in this particular PC.

What about a Threadripper based unit with 24 core 48 threads or 48 cores 96 threads or 64 core 128 threads on a X399 TRX40 motherboard and 1TiB of Threadripper compatible 3600MHZ DDR4 RAM and some way of controlling the bumpers and what have you, Linux runs very well on the RYZEN Threadripper series of chips, You could go with Linux Mint 20.1+Wine64+Winetricks+Zip.dll to run the Windows software or install the STEAM client for Linux.

So strange that those monitor options aren't activated on the stock cabinet. Hopefully that's just because it isn't the production line and its something they offer in the actual product, or have it all turned on by default.

Nope, I have a retail Star Wars pinball cabinet also and none of those settings are available on it either.

Thanks so much for a great and informative video. You mentioned that you don't recommend getting one of these if your intent is just to mod them. Any other kits you'd recommend? I love the Star Wars theme and really would need that smaller scale of cabinet for my room, so modding this cabinet seems like a solid fit for me. I'm much more comfortable on the PC modding side than in building a cabinet from scratch, so some sort of kit appeals.
