Thank you for the information. I live in Florida. I am also from Barbados and recently bought a cherry tree. When I bought the plant it had 3 cherries on it. Hopefully I will get some more fruit soon. How often would you wet the plant? Is every 3 daya too much?

So, when is the best time to take it out of a large container and put it into the ground? I live in Florida 9B. And it’s not like we have a horrible winter here but it does drop down in the freezing and then 85 to 90 ° at noon the next day.

My acerola is in full sun, at least 2 years old. Have mulched frequently, watered with compost tree as needed. Looks great but has never fruited. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I honestly think I’m going to pull mine. I only get 3-4 hours of sun… should I just get rid of it for something more shade tolerant? Any suggestions? I just want fruit on my patio and didn’t think it would be this hard..

Man, I finally got a cherry off of my tree that was tasty and less sour and more sweet. And yes, it tastes like Hawaiian Punch. Until this, I was very worried I had some other variety. However, I was told it was Florida Sweet, and now I believe it is! I had to plant mine in the direct sunlight for this to happen or it was something to do age? I'm not sure, both things were changed at the same time, so 50/50 I guess. I have one the same age growing next to my home and it's in the shade probably 80% of the day, and it's not flowering, so, obviously, no fruit. So I'm going with it needing the SUN at least 80% of the day in my Zone 10a/9b border near the River, so it keeps the frost at bay most every year, even last Winter (when everyone lost a lot of tropical trees near me away from the water). Anyway, I'm 100% onboard with Alan, it needs the sun, and a goodly amount of it! And try to drown it in well draining soil during the heat of summer. You can't, but it will love the water in the summer and fruit mightily for you!

Great video! I am planning on planting a Barbados cherry in a tight backyard space as well, so could you please advise whether I cran keep a Barbados cherry to a 5' x 5' maximum height and width indefinitely as it will be near a fence as well by puning it or this plant cannot tolerate hard pruning and may develop dead branches or not fruit well? Also do you know if this plant can be coppiced like mulberries in case I want to reduce its height drastically? Best regards

I bought two at the beginning of this year, It sounds like our climate’s temperature are similar, though I expect where I am at is way more humid. I was glad to hear yours came back from 19 degree temperatures. The reason is, that is the coldest night I have seen where I live and that has only happened once. Usually we get a night here and there that will dip to 25 degrees. That might be a total of 10 nights starting anywhere from mid December to early March. The 19 degrees happened on Christmas a couple years ago so that makes it east to remember. We were in the 70’s a few days later. Got to love Florida weather. Funny thing is, my two plants haven’t grown much at all, planted them in March but one of them has put out a couple flowers which I thought was a bit odd. Keep in mind these are young, the tops barely come up to my knees but what concerned me was, on the plant that is producing those flowers some of the leaves are fading to white on the edges. Normally when I see leaves fade, that is some sort of deficiency in the soil. I can rule out a Nitrogen deficiency because I already fertilized for that a few weeks after planting. So either it is just transplant shop or it is needing something else. Ohh and watch out, I hear there is a killer tortoise on the loose in your area 🍺

Hi, excellent video. I purchased a barbados cherry in a 6 inch pot. The problem is, it looks like about 3 plants in the pot. They are about 18 inches tall. I would consider them rootbound. I haven't removed the pot yet, as I'm letting them settle in to their new location. Question is, is it safe to do an emergency repot to separate them? The leaves on the bottom of one seems to be wilting a little. Please advise. Thanks

It sounds like you got seedlings growing. Yes you can separate them no problem as they're not root sensitive. Do it as soon as possible, growing season is ending. Don't bring them indoors, they need heat.

GOOD info...I grow many subtropicals but a few I've failed on including Barbados several times. Climate (9a farther N. Cali, low inland) not all that different from Phoenix, just subtract 5 or 10F off the your highs and add about the same to your lows. Maybe our nights are too cool, IDK, but mine died in fall. We can have high 90's and still 60's before sunup.

@@qctropicals Thank you! I was dreaming of something simple like acidic soil that has been so crucial to my blueberries and fledgling "most rare" (here) Jabotacoba tiny trees. Those thankfully are doing well if slow in small pots so far. For background: totally failed at mangos, none this far N, but avos are mostly thriving, 14 and counting in the ground. Grew Orinoco Bananas for few yrs, "cold hardy" type, made fingers of fruit but didn't mature and required too much water. Citrus a no brainer here with exception of cold sensitive types--thrive on neglect. Sugarcane beginning to thrive w minimal inputs, passion fruit works...examples on subtropical front. (have tons of nut and stone fruit trees, grapes, etc., but off topic) Really want those darn Barbados tho. :D

Barbados cherry trees grow mainly when it's hot at night. Growing season is almost over in the fall. Your tree will just sit there until warmer night temps next year. In the mean time, you will need to protect it in the winter or it will die and not come back.
