'Shark Attack Deathmatch' for the Xbox 360 Arcade felt similar to this game, although it was more of you being hunted than being the hunter.

In one of the Spyro games I played as a kid there’s a section where you can get swallowed by a whale. Absolutely fucked me up for life. The water is kinda hazy and you can just see the whale swimming in the distance and it’s so much bigger than you are. Couldn’t ever get past that part of the game myself. Would always have my mom play it for me. Now I never get in the ocean!

Oh! And if you're interested, I know exactly where my fear came from too. I used to go swimming at a river when I was in my teens, with my friends and cousins. One day, they suggested we follow the river to the nearby dam and swim there. We got there and everyone ran ahead and got in the water. I started walking in and the water was cold, plus the floor was a bit slippery, so I decided to just go under for a sec to get used to the temperature. As soon as I did, I realized that I was standing less than a foot away from the edge of the floor, to where all you could see is a huge black void. I panicked so much, I got out and have never forgotten that sight since.

The DKC3 music is prefect in the opening, considering the water levels in that game are great for triggering thalassaphobia.

Hello Gambado, I got a pitch for another scary moments in videogames iceberg. Idk if you covered this, but in Lego Batman 1 there's this creepy laughing audio that can be heard at the Arkham Asylum villain campaign lobby. It's very unnerving due to the laughter being so faint behind the music while still being clear enough to sound like a human voice, this disturbed me as a kid because that was the era of Lego games where they used indecipherable mumbles over clear voice acting. You can find the laughter isolated from the music here on YT and it's even more disturbing because there's nothing to drain out the creepy laughs and other loud noises. Idk the story behind the noises if it was ever public
@_Alaya_4 ай бұрын
bro you just unlocked a memory for me, you're so right. I think Arkham's background noises were just super creepy in general. Also Lego Batman 1 gives me this kind of strange feeling although it's a pretty upbeat and goofy game.

As someone with similar fears I have no idea why I thought it would be a good idea to play monster hunter 3. I was already on edge because I had to hunt shark like monsters in the water (which took me a while to hype myself up to go into the water and do that). When the Lagiacrus appeared in an early mission I turned off the game and I returned it to the library.

I grew up on the Californian coast and never really had a problem with thalassophobia until I had gone under the water crossing a river in Skyrim of all games. It was quiet and completely empty and I could see crystal clear in the water but that didn't stop my small teenage brain from freaking out so bad I had to get away from the computer for a bit. Always felt off about water levels after that, but it never really was so bad irl for me, I was a bit more hesitant for a bit, but I found I still could enjoy the beach. All this to say, fear is rarely a logical or rational emotion, and that makes it even more infuriating cause you can know you are perfectly fine at home sitting in front of a screen, but still feel like puking cause the there was a scary water level in a game :)

I don't have a fear of the ocean, I love it, but, I do have a fear of swimming under water, mainly free diving, I can swim under the surface and maybe go max 2-3 feet down, but any deeper I start to blow out all of my air and rapidly swim to the top. When I was 5 I witnessed a neighbors daughter, who was 3, drown in a pool. And I almost drowned at one point. Even in pools swimming down to touch the bottom I was always afraid of running out of air. In the USMC we had to do the helo dunker, which was towards my last 4 months in the military so it wasn't important that I did it but they still tried forcing me. And I'm embarrassed to say but I lost my shit. They put us in these chairs they flipped us upside down in, which you feel pressure and possible water going in your nose and instinct kicked in and I frantically tried swimming out of it and ended up kicking an instructor. He made me sit to the side and was told never to come back which was embarrassing as hell. But man, I literally can't take being under water. But I can scuba dive pretty fine. As long as my nose is covered and I have air I'm chill with water. Also jelly fish are fucked, you can't see them until they're on you and you can die just because of this.

Those shipwrecks give me Endless Ocean Blue World vibes, although the textures remind me more of the ruins than the actual shipwrecks in those games. Also while I don’t have thalassophobia I do often panic a bit when sharks show up in that game, since while you don’t kill them you have to pacify them, doesn’t help that the shark warning almost always pops up before you actually see the shark which leads to frantic looking around to see where it is. Also while it doesn’t lean into the horror side of it there are a lot of cutscenes where noteworthy creatures just emerge out of the murky abyss.

Dude, I'm with you on all of this. I too have a mild case of this phobia. I do get really anxious when I play certain games that have me do stuff underwater. Far Cry 3, Pinnacle Rock in Majora's Mask, GTA V, etc. However, Dave the Diver does nothing for me and I can play it with no issues. Same with Maneater.
