All my childhood on PC. This game is literally the reason on how i got introduced to endurance racing and how i got introduced to the BMW M3 E46 for the first time. Yeah when you ask me about BM the first one i've got in mind is this one not even the Rockport Most Wanted Icon. Not to mention my other discoveries such as the Lister Storm, Panoz Esperante, BMW V12 LMR, Bentley Speed 8, Sintura,..... Only the real ones know this game is a f*cking GEM ;)

Just from a nostalgia viewpoint this is one of my favourite games of all time. Thank you so much for giving me more insight on the cars that made my childhood! The Audi R8 is my favourite out of the bunch, it is just so powerful on the straights and just tricky enough in the corners to give the most satisfying driving experience. On another note: I can‘t believe I made it into the video. :D

Other than Freelancer, I like to believe that TIR gave me my fondest experiences in gaming, back when it was all relatively new to us and everything seemed to have mattered a whole lot more. My best friend is also a devout TIR fanatic and we occasionally clash in the seemingly ancient artifact of gaming called.. hot seat lmao, why was this abandoned in newer games? Anyway, it was usually him in Quaife and me in BMW, him in Sintura and me in Panoz and him in Bentley and me in the Audi R8. We are extremely close in terms of skill, but I'd have to give him the edge because on one hand, he has been driving for 12 years now, and on the other, he plays without abs or traction control and my busted hand (I'm a chef for.. too long) is simply not responsive enough to deal with the extra inputs necessary to keep the ride on track. Anyway, during 2004-2005 when I finally convinced him to play, we spent sooo much time centering our activities around it. Lunch at me, then going for a walk talking, TIR at him, then meeting friends, trying to apply peer pressure and indoctrination to get them hooked on this game, some more TIR, even more TIR, sleep, wake up already behind the wheel on the track.. we cruised through the challenge series but as teens who never really had any prior experience with games, it seemed, well, to put it bluntly, challenging. Our first hurdle was the 10 laps around silvertone in the German Cup, Audi vs BMW. Took a few tries, but that challenge alone made us despise hockenheim, simply because of how simple it was.. then I unlocked the BMW, and then he unlocked the Sintura which, to this day, is probably his absolute most favourite car in existence. A lil side note, we had an inside joke because we are hungarians, and we pronounce sintura as "szintura" which is a play on the "szint ura" which in hungarian roughly means the "lord of the level". Essentially, because of how great the handling was, we could steamroll the rest of the challenges with it, and earned its rightful place as the lord of this level.. so much so, that sometimes we could catch the lone BMW LMR with it on amateur difficulty lol This continued until the dreaded 25 laps around minato city.. if you know, you know that the game doesn't allow you to play this track up until this point in the challenge, so on one hand it was a pleasant surprise that it had more tracks for us, but it was also a dreadful feeling because.. man, 25 laps on a track that almost takes 2 minutes to complete against cars we just learned to drive against mclaren enemies that seemed almost impossible to beat.. yeah, the biggest challenge was the mclaren series for a while, they just accelerated faster, had higher top speed and cornered like hell while we were sliding around like we were ice skating. Took a couple of tries, failed miserably with every car excpet the sintura.. We didn't want to take it because we at that point felt like the game built the cars up slowly to make it necessary to beat the next challenge, and as we went down the rank of mclaren, listen, vemac.. it just seemed to reaffirm our suspcisions, until I took the Panoz for a drive. It became instantly clear that handling and acceleration was kind on every track other than hock, so my attempt was the closest we could get to winning, but still only placed second, after gruelling 50 minutes.. fed up, wanted to quit and do something else, but he was adamant that he can do it in a sintura because he analyzed the track and my gameplay during the meantime. We had this dynamic that one of us drove, and the other tried to keep focus on unnecessary info that could still help, like who is behind us, time gap, sector times, how faster/slower we were, etc. Long story short, he did bit it, and to make it even sweeter, it happened on the final lap on the final chicane because he took a risk by breaking early, and had a flawless sense of when he needed to accelerate to beat the mclaren on literally the last meter with a time difference of 8 milliseconds.. Words can not describe the joy we felt in that moment, felt like a second birthday (when those still mattered) or new years eve when everyone was celebrating for some reason. Unlocking the pro class was something else man, I was eyeing that V12 LMR for months up to this point and finally being able to drive it and so much faster than what we were used to felt sublime! Pro series went relatively easily, screwed up a few times, lost by a few points, but it never took the steam out of us to keep pushing and pushing until it was time for the Audi R8 competition.. man, those opponents were merciless, we could keep the pace with them in even the bmw in normal settings, but couldnt beat them in an equal car? Audi felt faster, more responsive and quicker than anything else, but for some reason we just couldnt beat them.. At that time I was already modding freelancer so I had some grasp on how games worked, and my idea of the game simply increasing the AI driver's skill was spot on, they just simply had stats that the normal car couldn't achieve with default setups and... the auto brake enabled LMAO We played that game for so, so long that we took auto brake as a genre staple because.. why bother concentrating on the breaking instead of accelerating and turning? We had a completely different sense of the genre as a whole simply because it was the default option.. turned it off and took a looong time and too many attempts learning how to break manually while also focusing on everything else. I know I'm talking (yapping) about a game all this time, but I just started my driver's license at almost 28 and lemme tell you, while intuitive, sitting behind a wheel and actually doing things does seem intimidating for a first timer, especially in tandem with so many other things as well.. so it wasn't far from the truth, but it still hurts lmao Anyway, days/weeks passed by, and one day I received an SMS.. that he managed to not only beat the audi challenge, but there WAS A NEW CAR WE NEVER ENCOUNTERED BEFORE? This was during the time when calls and sms were expensive and almost last resort emergency options for us at least, so an SMS itself had some weight to it.. I was baffled, I didn't believe him because the Audi opponents were that much stronger, but really, disabling the auto break gave him that much of an advantage? It made sense, but I thought that the developers carefully adjusted the auto break so you can corner properl- aaand no, it was well within the safe zones, and we could take half the break distance on average that resulted in much better average times across the board. Another long story short, we celebrated once again and immediately started working on getting the Pilbeam.. which went relatively smoothly in less than 10 attempts, it was hard because they seemed to have retained that Audi AI bs that made them that much faster than us, but we had early breaking and sliding to our advantage.. then came the Lister Storm LMP. Marvelous car, simply beautiful.. even worse hell to unlock it because the AI was rubberbanding that much harder.

We hit a platue at this point, and couldn't for the life of us beat that challenge.. decided that we had enough of challenges and hot seat for a while, lets delve deeper into the Career mode.. it went smoothly, but we really got tired of amateur and professional difficulty at this point so we made an attempt of doing the entire Career series from beginning to end on the Legendary difficulty.. it was hard and took a lot of time, but if memory serves me right.. we actually unlocked the lister lmp after beating the final GTS career race and winning the championship??? Again, words can not properly express our shock and disbelief, we thought it was an accidental cheat we did (because also back then, there were gaming magazines that had a list of games and their cheats that would be cryptic, like the famous up up left down left down whatever or a bunch of random letters in a quick succesion.. we just thought we did one like that accidentally and tried a fair bit afterwards trying to see if we can do it but to no avail) Again, got the car, practiced, beat the challenge and... oh yeah forgot to mention the hilarious 50 lap races. 25 laps around minato was just the appetizer, 50 laps is the real deal. If memory serves me right, there were three, 50 laps of sebring, monza and silverstone.. almost 2 hours of grinding, we switched seats every 10-13 laps depending if we were in the 'zone' or not, just trying to grind it out and make time pass in a fun way. There really isnt a gaming experience like that nowadays, where two players work so hard on a single player only task that doesnt really have any real benefits, just the enjoyment of company and the thrill of overcoming obstacles. Another long story short, reached the rockingham champ car which completely blew every other car out of the water effortlessly, no need to mention how op that is, but then we eventually finished the legendary career after a long hiatus.. AND IT UNLOCKED A WHOLE OTHER DIFFICULTY MODE CALLED EXTREME AND WE NOTICED THAT CARS NOW IN THAT DIFFICULTY WILL HAVE A FUEL GAUGE AND YOU HAD TO GO TO THE PIT TO 'REPAIR AND REFUEL'??? HOOOOLY SHIT LMAO At that point we were probably having more than a decade of TIR experience but never having the patience to sit through the career if we "knew" it didn't have anything more for us.. we really just finished it just so we can get over with it and cross that our from our list, but then again, the game surprised us and kept us hooked.. its August of 2024 when I just restarted this whole journey on my own for who know how many times, breezed through the entire challenge series on first try, legendary career is already completed and I'm already on the extreme difficulty career pro stage with the BMW LMR.. oh yeah forgot to mention, but in extreme the minimal amount of laps needed to complete the race is 25 lmao, solid hour of fun grinding while fuel reserves go low, car gets lighter, you set a new lap record every once in a while because your car is faster and corners better.. man, I can't shut up about this game Which, to be fair, is no longer a game for me, but an entire journey and a collection of experiences. I have no doubt that I call my best friend a best friend because we had this common denominator called Total Immersion Racing.. I forgot the day when I got this CD in a cereal box, but I wish I could go back in time, cover it in amber wax and just display it in a museum. I don't think there was a single game that kept me or rather us this cultivated and motivated, threw seemingly impossible challenges at us, kept surprising us after every corner and made the experience that more enriched.. Not to mention because of my modding experience, I started to take a crack at TIR as a whole.. already found a way to disable collisions with other cars and walls (you can make some RIDICULOUS shortcuts.. my silverstone lap record is less than 40 seconds this way) enable a function that makes the game take a note of your tyre temperature that further influences the way your car handles and accelerates (for example, different terrain has different cooling degrees, going on grass for a while can cool your tyres back enough to make a dent in your performance) disable terrain slowing completely.. at this point, I'm trying to create a custom challenge and career series from scratch, but the game refuses to listen to the code I implement, so it will be some time before anything worth mentioning is done. But you can edit driver ability, and each AI has a sort of personality with properties like skill, concentration, constitution, patience, how likely are they to take 'revenge' on you (that diamond symbol above their car that you can enable called emotions has a correlations to this) and so, so much more.. a game that came in a cereal for most of us has so much depth and variety that it puts modern games to shame lol If anyone reads this, thank you, I needed to vent, this video and this game as a whole was wonderful, and just couldn't let my memories fade into the abyss.. hopefully someone who reads this, will remember it far longer than I can possibly do, thank you

This game pyshics were better than most racing games in the 2010s. Plus the A.I actively drafted behind you. Which ever lane on a straight you took, they'd follow. No game would pull that off until nascar inside line series. Not even gt5 did that
