Really impressed by David Anton matching Magnus move for move in a difficult endgame where he was down a pawn and Magnus had two connected passed pawns with a bishop. I thought Magnus would grind it out but David definitely earned a lot of respect.

It’s classical chess, which has generous time controls (in this case, 100 minutes for 40 moves, 50 minutes for the next 20 moves, and 15 minutes after that with 30-second increments), so one game can go on for a long while.

Fun fact: According to the engine, Magnus had one single inaccuracy by missing that rook move Agadmator pointed out. This inaccuracy turned this from a winning endgame for Magnus in a draw. Crazy how one sinlge slight inaccuracy in a 69 move game can make the difference between a win and a draw.

@11:35 IMHO What if Magnus had given check with rook on H5. The only way for David to save his Rook would have been to put Knight in between. Magnus could have taken the Knight with the pawn. David would have the option to take either take Magnus' Bishop or lose another pawn. Ultimately, Magnus would have been up a pawn, with David only relying on his lone rook.

It will be theoretical draw. As black will have rook & pawn vs rook... at this level they would know how to draw it. So if you would try to win you have to save the bishop first and see if you can take advantage of the extra pawn.

There is an interesting line for black at 11:36. Instead of bishop moving away, give a check with black rook on h5. This threatens white rook, which is being in the same row of the king. So only way is to defend with the black knight on f5. Now black can defend its bishop by further attacking the knight, by placing it on d7. The best trade for white will be to safeguard its rook by attacking the black bishop on a7. This will further pin the black king.

Bishop if placed on a1, a8, h1, h8 Or anywhere on the long diagonals, then it can cover a max of 7 squares and it would be placed on the 8th one. Where as a centralized knight can cover 8 squares and it would be standing on the 9th one! Still many say that bishop is better than knight cuz it covers more squares. I feel that it's more abt knights ability to fork and bishop's ability to pin and hence bishop is better cuz a pin can be made to stay in a position for a longer time than a fork! Anyone else feels the same?

Gawd. Most of us amateurs worry about losing material, getting checkmated out of nowhere and missing such things and/or making mistakes when we try to calculate 3-4 moves ahead (at most). Realising how on championship level players also worry about positions that result in a draw, although at first prompted a young bull reaction out of me, like "someone has to win-this should be disallowed-change chess rules so that fewer draws can happen", thinking about it more, made me appreciate both the intricacies of the game, the players, and the game too, for a draw is very much a part of it. I would observe that it does make a difference on how its drawn, i.e. its different if a player reaches out a hand and the other accepts it, than for example when sometimes engines, trying to find the best move for each side, end up in 3-fold repeition of position(? definition of draw in chess iirc). Indeed it is the calling of the chess player to mind both space and the limitations and capabilities of the pieces, and avoid such draws, as this type of draws are not much different than checkmate either, which is also defined from the available space on the board and the limitations and capabilities of the pieces. Thank you Agadmator. Well done to the young gun and always a pleasure to watch Magnus play (to me at least - not that I could appreciate the depth of such a game but I believe not all was lost to me, as I am sure other players better than myself found and will find this game both educational and enjoyable)

After 42... Rh5+ instead of 42... Bd1 then 43. Nf5+ gxf5 44. Rxa4 fxe4+ and Black is two pawns up, because if 45. Kxe4 Rh4+ wins the Rook. Is Black winning after some move like 45. Kd4?

At 5:36 you made a mistake Agad - he cannot go to a3 or b4, because then Knight to f2 forks the two rooks and the pawn on e4. So white shouldn’t move his bishop out of the g1-h7 diagonal. I think what Guijaro played was the best move.

11:35 why not Rh5+ ? Seems to be a winning move. If the king moves take the rook. If the knight blocks with check, take with the pawn, lose the bishop, then take the e pawn, trade the rooks and go to the endgame up a pawn?

Anton pushes the a pawn to stop the two pawns from advancing (you can't take woth the bishop becaise of rook a1 with a skewer and you're lost), magnus takes the open file with his rook and Anton blocks it woth his knight to make that rook weaker

Hello chess friends. Please help me understand. At the 11:35 mark of the video, white captures the a5 pawn and seems to leave himself wide open for the rook h5 skewer from black to win the rook on a5. Astonishingly magnus doesn’t go for this. Why not? I know white can block with Ng5 with check, but the pawn can capture so it seems black is coming ahead a piece no matter what
@imanhaiqal23
@imanhaiqal23 3 жыл бұрын
If the pawn captures the knight then white’s rook captures bishop. And if then the two pawns in the cente get traded off than Magnus will be up the h pawn. Maybe he didn’t like his chances with that although it seems winning

Yeah, I saw that too! It seems that white has to play Nf5, then if PxN, RxB, PxP, KxP black has R and H pawn against R. Or after Nf5, B can escape to safer places and simply win the knight.

Please anyone, can you help me understand y after Magnus captured on E4 @2:38 that Anton didn't immediately capture the knight on C6 with his bishop. Based on looking at it magnus would have had his pawn structure ruined on the queens side with no consequence to Anton. If the bishop captured the knight then the king would have been in check. Magnus's bishop, the other knight or queen could not block because that would have led to a 2 for 1 trade, with white winning. Either nagnus's king had to move to F8 or the pawn on B7 had to capture the bishop. Afterwards the same series of move(queen captures queen) could have resulted. After all that Anton's knight on C3 could finally capture the pawn on E4 and be protected by his own pawn. Antons his pawn structure would have remained and it would have ruined the pawn structure on the queen's side for magnus. This would have been a much better position for white. Please tell me if any of my moves are off.
