The thing that makes it revolutionary is that it turns on vintage and manual lenses and makes them usable for solo photographers and videographers. Millions of vintage lenses collecting dust and growing mold become useful again. Filmmaking gets lots more affordable and useful. I've been doing film/videography professionally for about four years now. About six months ago, I finally decided to get a few manual-focus-only lenses and try to learn the art of manually focusing. It was, and still is, revelatory. It's the most fun I have ever had in this business. I don't see myself going back. I use a DJI RS2 with the DJI follow focus motor when I shoot on a gimbal, and it's honestly not nearly as difficult as I expected. It takes a couple weeks to get the hang of it, but once you really "get it," it really does become second nature. I haven't shot with an autofocus lens since June of this year. I have now purchased a number of manual lenses, many of them vintage, and it just opens up an amazing new world of cinematography. Everyone should give it an honest try.

Do you ever film solo in a situation where you don't have control? If I'd shoot a documentary solo I think I'd have to think about too many things at the same time to do manual focus, but when I can direct and things are more predictable, I could see mastering manual focus being very valuable. What is it about vintage lenses that makes them look better? I haven't used them and I haven't seen anything that convinced me I couldn't just do it in grading, haha.

I really hope we see LiDAR being embraced in more cameras in the future. I also hope we see this "add-on" tech being more widely accepted and built up more robustly. A difficulty long term with focus pulling systems and the more affordable cine-lenses is that the focus rotor apparatus squeezes the lens and the mount of the lens bends/breaks over time (sometimes it takes years). I do honestly believe that for low-light and close-throw distances, we'll likely see LiDAR appear on future cameras. It makes sense to do a combination of phase-detect + LiDAR in hybrid approaches similar to how we currently do dual-pixel, phase-detect, and contrast-detect in cameras all working together to cover all the trade-offs and conditions to get the best focus balance. Having LiDAR affordably thrown into the ring is a big win, and it's great to see innovation pushing forward. Also as this matures, I can see this being used more and more in professional cinema scenarios to allow cinematography to focus more on other higher level topics when they don't have to worry as much about sharp focus in shot. The automation for this switching focus smoothly is also going to be a big win in repeat-ability of shots between takes in big-cinema.

Just so I get this right, if you are starting from scratch, (not counting the camera or lenses), its like $650 for the lidar, focus motor is around $150, another $280 for the gimbal, then your going to need some kind of rail for the motor to mount to so another $100(ish). I have the predecessor of this gimbal with the previous lidar AF - it works perfectly. Only challenge is that when subjects get out of the lidar range (10-12m) the system automatically focuses at infinity, assuming that this is and the mechanical end of the focus throw of the lens (that was mechanically detected during the lens calibration). Unfortunately, nowadays most lenses can throw the barrel slightly beyond optical infinity for whatever so stupid reasons such as ‚headroom for temperature driven or mount tolerances (I believe they just want to save money during final quality control). Fur use with the lidar AF this means that you will end up with blurry backgrounds at infinity. Only ways to solve this is either limit the barrel throw mechanically at optical infinity during calibration (e.g. with the hard stops of a manual follow focus) or to calibrate the lens‘ infinity with shimming rings. I did the latter with my Sirui 50mm and getting unbelievable results. Having your lens shimmed correctly to meet end of barrel throw with optical infinity is also ver helpful when focusing manually - if you want infinity, throw the barrel to the end, and you nail it. Having an autonomous system (i.e. w/o) the gimbal would be a game changer for us amateurs who can‘t afford those 50 grands AF systems.

Sometimes you need manual because you want to time the focus movement and not let the machine decide how, even though the machine can have how fast or slow you want to rack, but, in your hands, you decide. So just like manual exposure, manual focus is great for filming and likewise, autofocus is ideal for certain situations like sports, vlogging, handheld jerky as fuck shoot or when you're a fkg loner.
