Just for those who haven't noticed. When Tadano introduced himself he said that he was good at "reading the room" and he can actually "read" the pop up dialogues and emotion cues that Komi "conveys" as speech bubbles and background SFX (kind of breaking the 4th wall). That's why he understood in the first chapter that Komi actually had problems speaking up instead of purposefully being a quiet perfect princess as everyone else think she is.

Yadano Makeru's name is a sort of scrambled version of "Makeru yada no" which means "I hate to lose." Yamai Ren's name is Japanese wordplay (kind of like a pun but not) on "Sick Love" - IE, Yandere Stalker. A great many of the names of the students' names are word-jokes. Heck, even Najimi's full name, Osana Najimi, is literally Osananajimi - "Childhood Friend"

ALL of the students names follow the same pattern of hidden/not-so-hidden/obvious pun in their names, after all the school is a school for "unique characters" in which Komi would really struggle to fit in, as explained at the end of Ep.1 "Unique characters" being most of them great representations of common tropes, cliché and other kind of stuff (like the "White Knight" character that Roshi keeps talking about, literally wearing an armor and having a "Knight" related name)

On Netflix Japan itself the anime got pretty good ratings as far as I know, but like any popular show it has people who dislike it. He also said in the review that he's not into show that are made up of positive, cheerful, and happy elements and he even said that komi is just like kaguya, takagi-san and horimiya and I cant get to like it which clearly shows that he's not into slice of life type anime. He even said that this show is just for young people so I assume that he's a lot order what we are and in the last paragraph he said that 以上、ひねくれ者の感想でした。 which translates into "thats all from a contrary person" thus, please just ignore it and I can guarantee you that people in Japan love this show regardless of ranking on automn animes and Japanese people are tend to be more toxic and aggressive on the internet anyway.

@@nemui384I liked Kaguya sama and horimiya, but to be honest, in Komisan's case, even I felt that Komi kinda has her absolute beauty and elegance going for her, so some way or the other people would be drawn closer to her. But what about average people who struggle to communicate? I know that this show is not focusing on that scenario, but I kinda relate to that sentiment. In my middle school years, i was kinda chubby and average looking, was extremely shy, and struggled to talk with people. I would get anxious thinking what if they don't want to talk to me, I don't want to insert myself into people's conversations. But there was a new transfer student who was pretty good looking but struggled to interact as well. But within 2-3 months he was already close with most people. People were just naturally drawn to him. I know it's my fault that I didn't try to talk more, but this show reminded me how beautiful or handsome people have such an advantage while settling into new environments.

Yamai is BY FAR the WORST character in the series. But that makes a certain event in the manga all the more satisfying. Manga Spoilers to Anime only fans: Recently in the manga Komi and Tadano started dating and when Yamai found out she approached Tadano saying she'll kill him and Komi steps in and tells her that she won't allow Yamai to hurt her boyfriend. My issue with Yamai is that she's very clearly an abuser with a superiority complex, not just criminally insane. If she did somehow get Komi to herself, all she would do is mentally and maybe even physically abuse her, because she doesn't want Komi to be happy. She wants herself to be happy, and deludes herself into thinking they're one in the same so she feels no guilt. If she somehow killed Tadano and took Komi for herself, she'd absolutely just manipulate and emotionally traumatize Komi to trick her into staying with her, and she wouldn't feel bad at all because she's delusional.

I don't know where you got the info from but Komi isn't hated in Japan as a whole like that. Just very vocal critics, but it's still popular via Manga and Anime. It definitely felt more fresh in the beginning, but the relationships with people does actually mature and progress much like Kaguya san. It does often stray off that main romance, but it never really was about it so it's fine even when it doesn't. But as far as me, half Japanese and lived in JP as a citizen, and all the people I've talked to (japanese forums, chats, and friends) enjoy it. So I don't know where the "Japan hates Komi" came from.

Oh jeez... one of the very few characters from ANY anime that I can't stand and see no redeeming qualities to.... The yandere is too strong with this one. That video about Japanese not liking this show, I think it's just a guy explaining what some ppl who don't like it say, and this show is still well-received in Japan. I think what that guy is talking about is just maybe some people in the more "mainstream" anime audience over there don't like some of the character designs (like Tadano's cowlick), and some people don't like how Komi is super beautiful and literally worshipped, while having a communication disorder in real life, it's not like that... I know, it's a show, so of course it's not going to be realistic, but I think those are the two major objections people have to this show. Finally, from now on, I will refer to him as Chad-ano, because he's a giga-Chad and doesn't even realize it (and the people around him typically don't see it either because they are so fixated on Komi). Chadano has put all of his effort and energy into being "average" (his full name is literally a play on this, translates to something like "just some person"). There are other easter eggs coming up that show how average he is that I won't spoil, but when you view him knowing that he's being that "average" on purpose, it's actually abnormal how average he is. In contrast, his ability to empathize with Komi and help her make friends... well, that is very clearly special and makes him unique... he's literally her first friend and was the person who looked past her beauty and silent nature to communicate with the person beneath all of that, so the guy is not average because nobody else had ever befriended her before. He's a freaking Chad. He's so Chad his name is Chadano, not Tadano. Chadano-kun if you want, but definitely never Tadano.

1:56 Episodes 1 and 4 are more of an exception, but if this shows has a defect, it's one (kind of a nitpick): the story structure will start geting too repetitive (I started noticing it and being kinda bothered by it by episode 10+). So, yea I know it has its flaws. Do I care? No. No, I don't. I feel great watching it, so still really want a continuation. However, I hope that in next part they start being more original with the way they show the story, because it keeps following the same pattern - I dunno how to explain it.

Personally i really like this style of story telling (it’s similar pace to reading the manga) but to each their own. as the story progresses there are more and more longer arcs so i’m sure there’ll be more episodes in future seasons that focus on one story rather than multiple short ones.

I mean more, like, the things that happen in an episode (more in other episodes, not this one) usually follow the same pattern. Like, Komi this, Komi that, emotional moment, cue the emotional music. I don't know how to put into words, I'd have to rewatch it more "critically" to be able to elaborate. But it's definitely something that's more noticeable when you binge it, and much more noticeable by the end of the season.

@@geekley oh yeah i actually saw that review. i kinda get where that criticism comes from. i think it’s just another case of either you like this method of storytelling or you don’t. personally i really like it so i didn’t mind how repetitive it is. season 2 will most likely end with tadano and komi becoming 2nd years. i can’t remember much from the manga about what happens around this time, but i do know in their 2nd year (which will probably be season 3) they introduce a lot of characters that are more improved from the somewhat repetitive characters we’ve seen so far.

Wait, so "the character designs are too unique" when we have Yugioh and Dragon Ball having hair that defy physics XD I understand that Komi is supposed to be more of a "slice of life" type series so it makes more sense for the characters to be more *generic* or less *unique* but then it becomes less fun, and it doesn't stand out as much as any other series. Just my thoughts on that. :0
