That's quite odd. Yes, you were getting sound, but those notes were all wrong! Edit: not ALL wrong, but definitely some of them. Does graphics data and tune data share the same bus?
@kiphakesАй бұрын
Yeah.. it does sound weird, doesn’t it?! The chip I suspect does also do some sound stuff.. so it could well be at fault.

It was playing all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order. -- Eric Morecambe

I was about to say that, I think I remember Kip saying he’d not played Alex Kidd in the last MS video, but for me the intro is built into my own brain BIOS, the notes were like it was changing key!

I’m only halfway through but man I choked on my cornflakes when you said “LETS DO SOME SUCKING” The S of ‘sucking’ sounded very much like an F 😂 if I ever steal an audio sample off you for one of my own videos, I’m coming back to that hahaha. Now back to the video, very much enjoying it, top class as always mate. Happy New Year! 🎉

Hahah.. feel free to steal!

Good first attempt. Not sure if you have a scope, if so, you could do a basic compare of the signals on the micro with your working one. No egg-sucking tutelage intended, but try and use anti-static precautions, some of these older IC's are sensitive.

Really intresting but gutted for you no fix on this one hope someone knows i have never worked on one myself

Around 6:27 the VDP IC pin 18 looks not ok, the trace besides it looks in bad shape. Several other places looks not very good.
@chrismifsud7154Ай бұрын
@23:15 Those numbers at the bottom of the chip are date codes. The original ones from the system are 1991. The replacements are from 1988.
@kiphakesАй бұрын
You are a star! Thank you! That makes sense! 🙌🏻🫶🏼
@chrismifsud7154Ай бұрын
@@kiphakes I may be completely wrong :) But that sound is completely off. Last I checked (a few years back) Z80 cpu's are still produced and sold and pretty cheap

A couple of the tiles are correct but its showing a totally wrong area, I've got an sms thats not as bad but still unplayable. I saw another video where they replaced some caps and cleaned up some traces that were able to get one working, its on a channel called jays vintage junk.
@DracoMcGuyverАй бұрын
Kip, Have you tried opening the shield on the video converter to check it out? Those questionable numbers on the chips are like serial numbers that include date of manufacture.
@kiphakesАй бұрын
I have not! And that makes sense about the serial numbers!

Hey Kip, Not sure if it's your lighting but some of the pins at the bottom of the video display processor look slightly blue, not the bottom row, the one above, maybe a spot of corrosion? I removed 2 of these weird chips a year ago and swapped them round on two machines. They ended uo were both being fine but trying to solder them back in gave me unimaginable pain. The legs were so soft and bendy when removed from the board. Anyway hope you suss it and get it working again.

I find it unlikely it’s the VDP, because it is outputting video… it’s just crap. Much more likely to be the bios chip. Oh, flood the cart slot with some contact cleaner!
@sarreqteryxАй бұрын
o0 I didn't think anyone was still making QIPs in 1990.
@lilmisssandiАй бұрын
its the chip with the double legs seen vid on utube that had same problems they replaced that and it worked
Hey Kip, do you wiggly your desoldering gun around the pins as you are activating the vacuum? I find it pulls out more solder that way. Also, I don't think it's the VDP or the VRAM as it can't recgnize if a cart is inserted so goes straight to Alex Kidd. It could be the bios, not sure tho
@kiphakesАй бұрын
Great tip! On all counts!
@chrismifsud7154Ай бұрын
I'm guessing either CPU or system ram. Re the cartridge, probably a dirty and/or damaged cartridge connector.
@KmanSwedenАй бұрын
@ 4:20 are the traces good between the cartridge slot and your index finger? Looks blackened. Annoyingly you don’t show it with the microscope.
@kiphakesАй бұрын
I think they are okay 👌🏼
@carlosjuniorfoxАй бұрын
Looks like be a bios issue. Do you have an original cartridge? Far as I know, you can place a cartridge ROM on the place of the BIOS for testing purpose
@kiphakesАй бұрын
I don’t.. however I have another broken MS2 I might grab the BIOS out of
@bugman293371Ай бұрын
Was Alex Kidd the last game you played on the other console? Would the cartridge remember the last game?
@kiphakesАй бұрын
Nope - never played it on that cartridge!

@chrismifsud7154Ай бұрын
The sound is all screwed up. I'm guessing its a fcuked cpu or system ram. I do NOT think its the video chip.
