Unfortunately I was severely bullied like Gary, though at least I was only beaten up once. But I was harassed every day in junior high, had things stolen from me, been pushed around, and honestly felt too scared and downtrodden to even speak. Being autistic (and undiagnosed) sure didn't help. All this to say, these experiences really do fuck you up. I'm 27 now and waaaay past it, but the "why am I like this" sentiment during crucial developmental years are shown to lead to chronic anxiety and depression into adulthood. While the book is obviously fiction, children can and DO act cruely toward classmates just for the hell of it. And while I do have a good family, families like the one in the book do exist as well.

Why I’m Afraid Of Bees is actually one of my favorite books in the series! I remember seeing the cover of it on a 6th grader’s desk when I was in kindergarten, wondering what kind of tale it possibly held. It was one of my earliest memories of Goosebumps.

As legitimately gutwrenching as the plot is, I can't help but question why the idea of just going on Dirks body presumably isn't brought up. It takes me out of it a bit that that isn't brought up since it feels like bad writing for the sake of drama.

Oh man, I was super into Goosebumps as a kid. They were the first chapter books I really got into, and I probably owned about 20 of them -- including this book. Since they were really short, that made them not only easy to read but also easy to re-read, which means they've stuck in my memory a lot more than other books I read as a kid. I wouldn't say Why I'm Afraid of Bees was one of my favorites, but there are a lot of scenes that stuck with me. (Plus, this was how I learned that bees die when they lose their stingers.) One thing that stood out for me was when Dirk-as-Gary asked Gary's mom if he could have some taco chips, and I thought those sounded so good as a kid. Turns out, he was probably just referring to plain tortilla chips (although it could have been Doritos. Who knows? When was the last time you heard someone use the phrase "taco chips"?) Also, this may be controversial, but I don't think you're missing much by not having peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I like peanut butter and I even like grape-flavored stuff, but the combination of the two is a bit messy and not very filling. I prefer sliced tomatoes and olive oil on toast.

Honestly subbed during the late diagnosis autism segment, incredibly relatable. I meant to sub earlier by the way, I've watched your content for a minute now but I'm very bad at actually clicking the sub button! Apologies! Anyway, I feel very similarly. Always knew I was alien somehow, I was very severely bullied in elementary but just seemed to exude a discomforting aura from then on, people just seemed to not like me, and often admitted as such. My dad often referred to me as lazy for most of my life, my teachers all called me scatterbrain and spastic, I really felt like I *knew* I was the problem. And I didn't even find out about autism until I was maybe... 22? Like 2 years ago. I had an ADHD diagnosis (along with severe depression and severe anxiety) but it was from when most doctors thought the two conditions could not co-exist. Since I had received the ADHD diagnosis so early, I was also never recommended for an autism assessment. I still have not been able to receive the assessment, but rest assured I *know* I'm autistic, after these 2 years of exploration and research and trying really hard to understand exactly what autism *is*, I am absolutely assured of that. And I also wrote a 320 page document detailing my symptoms and experiences, just in case haha. It became a special interest of mine to say the least. I'm still trying to forgive myself and realign myself with who I should be, to take my mask down and everything, but it's so deeply ingrained in me (via abuse of various kinds and of varying severity) that it's extremely difficult to do. Anyway, hope you are doing well. Love the bee outfit btw ngl

I was such a scary cat when I saw goosebumps every where as a kid and try to avoid them all elementary school years because the book covers look so scary and unsettling. I did at least read one when I was in middle school and it was a warewolf mask and it fit the Halloween feel and it was a bit scary even though reading it at 13 years old wasn't a big deal. But it showed the writers to some older audience can feel the terror so well

I passed up the one about the shark and the worm one for the same reason.

The ending, so is it if one of the beings participating in "Person To Person" expires then all involved in the swap go back to their own body. If either Gary's or Dirk's body had expired, the Bee and the survivor return to their own bodies? So in a way, when the neighbour almost removed him, the ordeal could have been over. Or was it to do with stinging Gary in particular? If it was to do with, one body expires, if it wasn't a kids book, Dirk's body being controlled by a bee couldn't be safe. Even eating flowers could be dangerous. I'd imagine that something harmless to a bee might not be so for a human, but how could a bee know that. So that way Gary would go back to normal as would the bee?

I liked this little summary, a lot actually, so, do you mind doing one, and giving your opinion, about one of my favorites? It is one i read as a small child on my tiny elementary library, so i cannot remember it's title, but it is about some kids entering an old lady's garden for (some) reason, and she cursing them all for doing so, making them all suffer with a trump card mark on their bodies as a warning of their next victim.
