“Just because I can doesn’t mean I have to.” That is SOOO good! Very proud of you, Maya! I stepped out of the classroom at the end of last school after only two years. It was so hard because of how quickly my identity got wrapped up into my title as “teacher,” but I don’t regret the decision at all. It’s given me so much margin to pursue other passions and really love and support others in a way that wasn’t possible for me while in the classroom. So excited for you and praying for you as you continue this next chapter!

I made the same decision about a year ago. I quit my teaching job after 10 years. Just like you, when I started teaching I thought I was going to be a teacher until it was time to retire. It was a hard and scary decision, but now, a year later, I can say it was totally worth it. Teaching is a really physically and mentally tiring job. I'm sure you'll do great in this new stage of your life! 💜 Get that rest you deserve and keep on rocking!

Unfortunately, the direction of the education system has caused a lot of great teachers to seek other options. I majored in education but changed majors with a year left when I saw the direction things were going and my heart told me it wasn’t right for me. Love kids and have been blessed to work with them in other areas, but I get it. I’m happy for you Maya! Follow your heart and God’s direction for you! Looking forward to where it leads you! 😃

Hi Maya! I’m a first year teacher and the amount of overwhelm-liness I’ve felt because of the all the info needed to be learned besides classroom management, curriculum, connecting with students and parents, etcetera is a lot! I’m also a mom of 4 and 1 year old and have been dealing with guiñt and anxiety every morning that I leave to work and then coming home to unfinished work for the day. It makes me wonder if teaching is something that I still want to do. I entered teaching because I loved it and now I’m just a mix of emotions. Anyway, Sunday scaries are real! Thank you for this video, God bless!

When I started watching your channel years ago, it was for teaching inspiration and ideas. As the channel and community evolved away from teaching content, it never felt as though there was anything missing. You ARE teaching all of us that decisions like this are not easy and will take time, but ultimately we all need to do what is right for us, and I thank you for being an authentic example of that. Thank you for the cheers to us teachers as well (going into year 15 next week!), congratulations on your big decision and best wishes to you going forward! We're all excited to see what lies ahead for you! 🙂

I've been teaching for 15 years. The last 3-4 years have been challenging. It took such an emotional/mental toll. The stress began to manifest in physical illnesses. At one point I was crying everyday because I felt so hopeless. Midway of the last school year, I requested a leave of absence for the 2022-23 school year. Luckily it was granted. I need the rest! Unfortunately, all of my benefits and income are cut off at then end of August. I just hope that I can pay my bills for the next 12 months, but it is worth the mental/emotional rest I will have. Best of luck to you!!

My mom is a teacher. She is the mother of three and also has chronic migraines and fibromyalgia. I went to the same school she taught at for years and saw first hand of difficult her job is. Teachers absolutely have a ridiculously hard job, for which they are compensated very little, and given little recognition. Teachers shape our lives and change the course of our lives in so many ways. But it is so difficult for them. Maya your masters degree was not "for nothing". You have touched and altered the paths of so many young lives. Even if that's all the students you ever teach, it is still such an incredible impact. Trust in God's plan. Thank you for being such an inspiration

Maya, thank you so much for sharing. I left the classroom this January during my very first year as a full-time first year teacher, and like you, it was so scary because I had been dreaming about that job since I was a little girl. I went back to the classroom to teach summer school this summer and it was great, but I’m so unsure of what to do. Even thinking of returning to the teacher lifestyle fills me with fear, anxiety, and exhaustion.. but I also know there’s so much I love about the job. I felt you so much when you said it just felt like you were never doing enough… 🥺 Truly believe there is so much courage needed to both stay and leave the classroom, and I am so so proud of you. Proud of you for choosing rest and for choosing yourself 💛

Maya!!! thank u for articulating this so well. it made me teary-eyed. I've found comfort in your videos because we have so much in common. Working out, being a teacher, sharing similar faith and beliefs etc. I've been teaching for almost 4years now and just hearing a fellow teacher talk about the exhaustion and how we always want to give our students the best is so relatable. there were so many times i felt like my students didn't deserve me and they deserved a much better teacher and i'm still in the process of figuring this out i guess. but i love them so much its crazy. Teaching really humbles me and teaches me so much about myself too. I am currently in college to become a teacher and i have often thought about if teaching is right for me because i'm not an extrovert like many people and public speaking isn't my strong suit. However, i really want to become a teacher and have wanted this since i was a kid. Just hearing you say to do things I want instead of what is right for me really eased some stress i have. This job might not be perfect, but ive already come so far and most importantly, i want to do it. You've been a source of inspiration to me for a few years and although you are no longer a teacher, you will still be someone to look up to. I started watching your channel because of your teaching videos but stayed for your routine videos. I also quit teaching this year so that I could spend more time being with my toddler because I would think about him all the time while at school. It has only been 8 months but I feel like a different person where I am more balance, content and well rested. You made the best decision for yourself and I wish you the best, Maya!!!!

i’m glad i watched your video. i’m 22 and i work with infants right now and i will be going to school to get my units for the infant room even though it’s not really what i want to do. i either want to be a kindergarten teacher or aa early childhood special education teacher. i haven’t decided and it makes me nervous but i’ll trust God more. i’m so happy for you and this new chapter, God bless you ♡

Hi Maya, I can relate 100% to this video. I also left teaching after 6 years. I loved being in the classroom but the amount of hours after school and on weekends I would put was overwhelming and I was constantly exhausted. I hesitated leaving the profession for a while because I felt like I wasted time doing my education degree but it was a good decision. It's scary for sure but it will be amazing :). I am now a dietitian which is crazy when you mentioned it in the video. Keep going with the amazing videos. xox

Really proud of your decision👏 I quit my permanent day job for taking care of my family, and i know how it feels to quit a job. But definitely it is worth to put your time on something that gives you peace.

Oh Maya 🥺 thank you so much for sharing. I feel you and understand. As a teacher I’ve had the same thoughts and I too decided to leave teaching next year. I loved my students but you took the words out of my mouth. Rest. It’s time to rest. A new transition is taking place and I’m just so excited for where God is taking you and will continue to take you going forward. Much love your sister in Christ, Sarai 💛
