By definition it's not often we come across once in a generation guitarists. Shawn Lane and Allan Holdsworth were probably the most notable. Now there is Matteo Mancuso. Leaving pro players agast with his incredible playing style, more versatile than a swiss army knife and with phrasing that would melt a stone cold heart.
In this video we look at some reactions to Matteo's playing as well as some of his best clips. The guy is frighteningly good. His new album "Moonlight" is out with his band DriftLab, check it out below:

Man, inane doesn't begin to touch what you've crapped out, here! I'm going to just leave this, now. I fear that any further time spent in the orbit of your "comment" will only lead to potential brain decay on my part, and I can't afford that! You were "kidding," right? I mean, please tell me that was simple, clued-in "troll-ery.". A waste of time, still, but at least I won't worry quite as much about the future of our race, if so. Jesus. "One note at a time." First off, not exactly true (double stops, fingerplucked clusters, etc.). But if you come up with a way to play multiple single notes at the same time in linear solo lines, please share, will ya?

@@robertdefex3439 I have to strongly disagree with your statement. Even his technic is very personal (he's not playing in the flamenco or classical style as I could read it, inspired from it but it's something else and it's not just a trick, it gives him this phrasing so peculiar, extremely clear, that he's got). He already has his own style (even if he's also capable to interpret others' music with feeling) and I'm really looking forward what he's going to create in the next years. But as impressive his technical skills are, it's everything but shredding, it's always dedicated to the music and phrasing, I followed him for a couple of year now and I will probably be amazed for decades by his feeling and phrasing,

As an aficionado of good guitar playing and student of music theory and composition at university, I am astonished by this amazing young and bright talent. I was totally floored back in 1971 when I discovered British guitar phenom John McLaughlin (after being initially introduced to Page, Beck, Clapton and Hendrix), but after hearing this highlight reel of Matteo I’m back on the floor again and struggling to get back up to catch my breath! This young artist has nowhere to go but up, and there are few out there now who come close to his mastery over theory, fretboard knowledge, various styles, phrasing, acute sense of the music around him (pocket sense?) and most important, musicality. I hesitate to compare MM to anyone alive or passed, but I’m looking for some gravity and center here in trying understanding his unique approach to the instrument and idea execution: I start with Larry Carlton, probably one of the greatest masters of clean, melodic phrasing ever, and add Guthrie Govan for shear effortlessness, virtuosity and imagination. Surely with the Flamenco training MM has had he has now expanded the instrument to a full two-handed standard that few will be able to emulate. My question: has MM begun to explore world music and other theories of music as McLaughlin has? I hope he will as I see music as a universal language for him to access and utilize with theories from this wider universe. It would almost be too much to ask for!

Mateo's right hand is flamenco-style, and on electric, he also mutes unwanted strings or string noise by muting them with his other fingers while playing with the picking fingers!! His note choices and horn-like intervals while improvising is something else, also!! The tone from his picking hand resembles the attack of a pick, while retaining the warmth of fingerstyle. Truly a one-of-a-kind, unique player in this day and age!!

This isn't flamenco style. It feels more like he comes from a nylon classical background, kept on going with the fingerstyle stuff when he expanded his music and adapted it. But i don't see flamenco techniques here, appart from rest strokes if it's what you meant, which is not exclusive to flamenco

The guitar community needed new talent to *really* take the instrument into this millennium - not just Vai, Satriani, Malmsteen etc etc. All these famous names are without a doubt still very valid, impressive and musically relevant, but still it is based on what they developed last century. I'm stunned by the skills of young people like Mateo, but even more so by their dedication to their instrument!! Who said young people can't invent anything anymore?? 😀 The new generation will come up with sounds and techniques us old guys (I'm 57) never could even dream of. And that's as it should be 😎👍🙏

He's probably not as strong (yet) as either of those players, nor at the level of Al Dimeola in his prime, nor close to Paco who was also of course fingerstyle. But he is fantastic, and beyond the technical ability aspect, one of the most musical players out there now. I'd put him at almost the level of Guthrie (Govan). He is something special no doubt.

99? I would say 100% of guitar players who aren't him can't do what he does. Sure, I would never go so far as to say so-and-so is better than this other guy since it's all just about personal preference, but I think he stands clearly on his own just in terms of incredible technical ability and speed combined with amazing feel, and being able to play across seemingly infinite genres and I don't think it's possible to confuse him with another person. His finger picking while sweeping totally blows my mind though. Edit: Sorry, guess I didn't really clarify this point, when I say nobody else can do what he does, I mean that everyone has their own unique way they play. In that regard, nobody else does what he does.

Has he EVER played in A BAND ?? Completely different thing. Basically a quasi Holdsworth, but ALLWAYS sitting down KZbinR. I Admire that he uses all the "Picks" gifted to him. ( &, anyone who does ) I play with my fingers & occasionally a pick. But, Espically after the Covid thing, Not playing with An UNREAL Band, is freaking me out. There's a "Magic that is possible" That can pull incredible things out of you, That you normally wouldn't even think to do. I hope he explores this. Sometimes you have to go through many people to find "IT" This would take him to yet another leval.
