My stepdad had a similar relationship with my dog, Roxy. My stepdad really didn't want a dog and said "you guys can get a dog, but don't expect me to love her like you all will" We found her at a very fifthly and terrible shelter and saved her from that awful place. My stepdad was bringing her home, and I think that is when they first bonded. We cleaned her up, and over the years, she and my stepdad bonded closer than she did with anyone else in the house. My mom was her mommy, who would take care of her. She was always following her around. My stepdad was her boyfriend though. When we first got her, we were going to let her sleep in a cage downstairs. That quickly turned into letting her sleep in a cage in my parents room. Eventually, that turned into letting her sleep with my parents snuggled up in bed. At night time before everyone was asleep, my stepdad and Roxy would just stare into each other's eyes, lying on a pillow. Whenever my stepdad came home from work, it was time for everyone in the house to yell "Pat's home" (my stepdad's name). She would go crazy, grabbing the nearest toy and greeting him with tons of love. Sadly, Roxy passed last September, and I still miss her and think about her every day. She was 12 years old. The joy and perspective that Roxy gave to our family is something that will stay with us. She changed my stepdad's entire perspective on animals. We will miss you Roxy, forever.
