You can use the Shou Sugi Ban, a Japanese method of preserving wood. You char the wood with a torch. You can do just the part that gets buried or the whole thing. I’ve seen a lot of homesteaders using it. You might google it to see if that’s something you might like to use. I think Safety Sally may need therapy after y’all get finished.......if she lasts that long. LOL. Blessings, Love & Hugs from Vicki in Ft. Worth, Texas 🇨🇱🇺🇸👍❤️😁🙏🙏🙏🙏

Enjoyed the video. On the draw knife try turning it over. The shiny bevel up is for deep gouge cuts, bevel down is for skim cuts- debarking. I use a step ladder and tailgate or tractor bucket to hold the logs while debarking, easier on the back. Would also purchase bat houses!

About that fire safety, also clear the thatch around the burn pile down to bare dirt. You do not want your fire creeping out when you think it is out and cold. Be careful about the weather too, hot and dry conditions are what makes California burn so badly.

What you need to get is a Log Peeler 16. They are very inexpensive, equivalent to the cost of room & board. These Log Peeler 16s are well known around the world of settlers with families. I believe you have one nearby and don't realize it. They take all the work out of the project for you. Just dump some food in the pipe that is nicknamed the "Pie Hole" and they can run a long time. They are the main reason Settlers had large families. Everyone should have one! Cheap, easy to use and last for several years as long as you keep it will maintained. ;-) Art in Calif

You should of bought the draw knife as made in the USA! Pretty easy but takes a lot of work by end of day you will know just how hard it is. Your garden beds should be under the greenhouse. You should of checked out Tractor Supply, Harbour Fregiht for Draw knife first off. Make sure you got way to vent Greenhouse. Install Drip Water supply into the garden beds in 6" strips.

Using a chisel to cut through the bark and then pulling or raising it with other hand, I find this method easier than using draw knife method. Specially if the bark is thick like that of pine trees.

Take a reciprocating saw and cut your knots flush to the pole before setting them in the hole this will make it easier to peel the bark …… I would sushi burn the 1st ( 31/2 ft. ) and then coat it in use motor oil to make it rot resistant and then pack clean half inch crushed rock around it and save on concrete

You'll get the hang of the draw knife soon enough. I would recommend two V braces and one half the height of the other so that your log ends up at an angle. Also, try drawing with knife held at an angle while drawing straight back. Should make it easier. And if it were I debarking those trees, I would insist that the chainsaw come back out and whack all of those nubs off as much as possible. Yes, it is an unfortunate extra step, but knots are no bueno for the knife blade. Keep a sharpening stone in your pocket while working with the knife as well. That should streamline your operation somewhat this time. You now know in the future that if you are cutting a log to be debarked that you cut all limbs as close to the log as possible to begin with. The process will go much quicker. Once you get that down you should be able to debark 20 reasonably sized logs the size you are using for your posts in a single day easy.

You are correct. And I happily concede the point. There IS a place for that "solar generator". But there's just something about calling it a generator that sticks in my craw. Especially since, if you plug it into the panels provided, it doesn't actually immediately put out and continue to provide the power it says it can, does it? With a gas generator, fuel it up, start it, and you immediately have the capacity it says it provides. And you'll have that capacity for as long as the fuel lasts. On the face of it, this is a glorified UPS that plugs into either the wall, or a solar panel. Just call it portable power or something. Calling it a generator like they did, kind of shot them in the foot. They have people that are lapping it up. But they lose a lot of people who just can't get past the feeling of "click bait-iness of the name. LOL Bottom line, it looks like a great product. And it absolutely has a place! As you have demonstrated.

I know this video is old, and this is not a knock against the youtuber, but the guy had the drawknife upside down. You want the beveled edge on the log. It also works better if you hold it at a lateral angle, so the knife can sort of slice the bark off. Cool salamander. That wasn't a crow, it was a raven. Ravens are good, don't shoot them. Your draw knife will probably work long enough to met current needs. The expensive ones will last generations. You might want to look into the Japanese method of treating wood (fire).

Are you charging your portable battery using AC? I'm wondering if it would be more efficient to charge it via 12V or 24V DC, if you have the hookups readily available. Those inverters take a bunch of juice off the top. Although, if you're charging at mid-day when your house batteries are at capacity, it wouldn't matter any. Also, most of the debarking setups that I have seen on KZbin are a foot or two higher than yours. Dunno whether you'd want to build a new one, though. :-)

That will surely build up muscles in your forearms and biceps LOL You might have a few sore muscles but good job you will get use to it. WEAR SAFETY GLASSES when you are debarking those posts you are looking UP and NO PROTECTION???

Hello from Australia. Nice channel. Lovely spot to have a house but do you have a problem with deadly snakes, bears etc in your area?

In the end you might have wished you paid the money for an American made blade. Chinese steel is usually poor quality across the board. You'll will probably find out when you start sharpening the thing.

A couple of comments if you don’t mind. I see you have a lot of subscribers, good for you. But, I’m sure that the cheaper draw knife doesn’t hold an edge as good as the more expensive draw knife. If I were you with some of the money you’re saving on posts, I would buy the more expensive one and compare the two.

Thanks for the input. Maybe I will some day. But for now that money has a different job.
