This High Yield Dividend Stock Keeps Proving Me Wrong

I don’t usually like to talk about stocks I don’t like on this channel, unless I feel like I’m warning investors about yield traps or their long-term share price performance. Over the years, I’ve voiced my disgust with some investments that have really bad track records of performance, including Orchid Island, Annaly Capital, and Armour Residential. But I have to admit that almost ever since I started talking about them, there’s one stock that stands out that I’ve been somewhat pessimistic about, and that’s continued to perform exceptionally well. Although I was never strongly against them as much as Annaly Capital or Orchid Island, despite my negative outlook, their stock has done really well, and a lot of my subscribers continue to be holders of this stock. So in this video, I want to take another close look at this stock, which I have to admit I’ve been completely wrong about up to this point, and try to determine what the future holds for them.

Whenever I see videos speaking about money. I always wish people knew what I knew about money and how it’s not so difficult to hit your financial target if you know the right steps to take. Honestly, I see Not making upto a million before retirement as an unfulfilled retirement. I’m 54 and my wife is 50 . We are both retired with over $3million in net worth and no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. No longer putting blames on the FED for our misfortunes. Saving and investing lifestyle in the stock market made it possible for us this early. Even till now, we earn weekly.

Thanks for the honest update. The « riskiest » BDC I own is HTGC. I decided not to own Trinity for the reasons you are listing, even if they are doing quite well.

This BDC doesn't make any sense. How is it making it's money when all it does is back purely speculative companies, and those companies almost universally have losing track records. It doesn't make any sense. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

This stock has been a bargain. At its base dividend rate it pays about 13% based on current share price. Not including any specials. It goes ex div on Thursday. It trades at a premium to Nav (13.17 last reported) but compared to the premiums people pay for popular BDCs like HTGC it is priced well. I also expect nav to increase along with many other bdc navs as interest rates come down.The analyst price targets range is 14 - 15. It was 15.28 at close today. Will drop on Thursday after goes ex div. I also like RWAY as a newer BDC. They like trinity have sold new shares this year (or are in process) which has also impacted share price. CION is another newer one to look at but their non accrual % is pretty high but sells way below their Nav so a give and take there. Like all holdings in my portfolio these only make up a small % of my portfolio but I think some of these newer BDCs are great opportunities but as pointed out in the video have more risks than ones with longer track records. Trinity does hold some blockchain/crypto companies so keep in mind which I think Div Bull pointed out in an earlier video on this company. Thanks for another great video! All your points are valid.

Considering a return to individual stocks in 2024, but uncertain about safely investing $500k in the market.

You need a certified financial planner straight up! Personally, I would invest in ETF's and also love investing in blue chips/growth stocks.

Agreed, diversifying your portfolio is crucial. Quality stocks provide a strong foundation, but considering other assets is vital for risk spread. My CFP has helped my $657k portfolio grow by 22% this year alone. Consider adopting a similar approach.

high dividend stocks are high dividend for a reason. usually because there is something wrong with their business and the company value is dropping.

BDCs are required to pay 90% of their earnings to shareholders as dividends

@@TristanRailsback-c9c Not only that, but there's probably some law that says that a certain amount of the float needs to be publicly traded, while the 3 employees of ORC holds more than half of all the shares and the company itself probably holds a lot of it. That means the dividends are tax free income, where the employees don't take any paychecks at all. It's very, very smart.

I have ORC, equity trap, but I bought in at $9.5/shr. Fortunately that was low enough to where neg equity is improving. I like the $890 in dividends I was just paid this month. It’s great for income, and will hang onto it for now, but will sell half of it once I get my investment back and find another company for that.

your p/l doesn't effect whether or not its a good decision, think "if I had [insert position value] would I want to buy these shares? if the answer is no then sell.

@@lieutenantpi depends on a lot of factors, including how big the loss is in dollars and if something else can make up the loss. Most underwater stocks for me are due to interest rates. I can wait them out in most cases.
