Some of the most common questions I get from people who want to live off dividends but don’t have millions saved up revolve around what kinds of investments would be most appropriate. Although mainstream news outlets will try and tell you that you’ll need millions to live comfortably off dividends, the truth is, if you’ve been watching my channel for awhile, you’re well aware you can make a lot of money from dividends with less than half a million saved up. The tricky part is that a lot of the investments that allow you to do this don’t receive a lot of attention from more traditional news outlets. Many people who get discouraged once they find out how much they’ll really need to invest to live off dividends from a 1%-yielding investment quit dividend investing altogether. So in this video, I’m gonna briefly go over what I’d consider to be some of the most crucial types of investments an income holder should have in their portfolio to live off dividends. I’m also gonna give some specific suggestions as to what holdings investors should consider for each investment type. Some of these I’ll spend a little more time covering, and some will be more rapid fire.

You're correct. I think the smartest way to go is to spread out your investments. By putting your money into different asset classes like bonds, real estate, and stocks from other countries, you can lower the risk if one part of the market goes bad.

I have been a dividend focused investor for a long time. This does not mean I don't own growth stocks, I do. A well rounded portfolio should be a mixture of both categories. One way to minimize the anxiety out of stock market investing, is to make sure you keep a large cash cushion. I invest in the market, but never put all my money in market.

I would think that a major benefit of dividend investing is that calculating portfolio size needed is not relevant. We don't care about the value of the portfolio. We care about the sustainable income it pays. As you invest you can gradually see the income rise as you invest more and pull the retirement trigger when it's high enough regardless of the market sentiment.

Calculating the portfolio size needed is very relevant. - How else do you know how much to contribute?
@rogerwheelers4322
@rogerwheelers4322 4 ай бұрын
By calculating how much additional income the contributions produce and estimating how that income rises. the capital value will fluctuate up and down over time so the amount of income new additions give you varies. so capital value being high with a market yielding 2% is no worse for retirement than the same portfolio at a different timepoints where the capital value is half and so the yield is 4%. so long as the yield is sustainable in real terms the capital value being half does not matter. its the same income stream at a different moment of low market sentiment vs high market sentiment.

I'm sure the idea of an investment-Adviser might sound controversial to a few, but a new study by Motley-fool found out that demand for Financial-Advisers sky-rocketed by over 42% since the pandemic and based on firsthand encounter I can say for certain their skillsets are topnotch. My dividend journey began when I realized that two particular expenses in my budget were always going to go up and never go down. The two expenses were taxes and insurance. I realized that the dramatic rise in both will need some added income. So, I started buying shares paying dividends. I can now see that this will be the path I need to take to make sure those two expenses will not overtake my future income.

Since a while ago, I've been in touch with a coach, mostly because I lack the depth of understanding and mental toughness to deal with the ongoing market conditions. Because of dividends, I first began investing in stocks. It's important, in my opinion, to be able to live off of dividends without selling if you invest and make other income in addition to payouts. It suggests that you may pass that down to your kids and give them a leg up in life. Over the years, I've invested over $600k in dividend stocks; I continue to buy more today and will keep doing so until the price drops even further.

There seems to be more negative portfolios in the last 3rd half of 2024 with markets tumbling, soaring inflation, and banks going out of business. 3:50 The yield may be low but MAIN also pays extra quarterly dividend that is usually larger than their monthly. As of 2024 the dividend is $0.24 pr share and their quarterly is now $0.3 pr share. The extra dividend is not a garantee but have been consitent for years and combining the normal and extra dividend does raise the yield to above 8% which I would say is great considering the alternatives.

Instead of buying high dividends stocks for income I do deep in the money covered calls. This can also be done on non-dividend stocks. I just did one for a 5+/- month period. Invested $31,330 with a return of $1950. This may be done twice a year and with the same results it’s a 12.5% yearly return with only being in the market 10+/- months. The stock can go down 16.8% before losing money which is downside protection.

I am approaching 40K in investment income per year. I have between 30 and 40 different stocks, bonds, ETFs and money market funds in my dividend portfolio. Some of those are growth but in the last 5 to 10 years I have mostly invested in income and looked for securities that pay more than 4%.

Form K-1s have never bothered me with all my MLPs, but tax year 2023 I got hit with Form K-3s, which is a new requirement where MLPs report foreign tax. Problem is, K-3s don’t come out until June, July or even August. I’ve paid taxes for 45 years, and 2023 was the first time I EVER had to request an extension to file a return, now until later this summer. Just feels strange to have to delay. MLPs definitely are getting more complicated. Still, it’s worth the dividend return.

I do agree that everyone is different when it comes to how much you need. I actually have around $1.9 million and I’m retired and I rely completely off my dividends and options income. I sell covered calls on my growth, dividend stocks such as PEP, MCD, PG, JNJ, IBM, HD etc. however, the mistake those so-called experts make is saying you need more to live off dividends it’s actually the other way around you need more if you’re going to rely on the 4% rule and selling shares to live your lifestyle.

Biggest mistake I have made in the market, never again.

@SpeakerBuilder Your cashflow from those stocks are doing poorly? You must be kidding? Stock price themselves are cyclical in energy companies; when you buy is important; cashflow from these investments is far more than RIETs. In many of these companies you will have a freeroll option after 8 years or less. Fundamentals are better than any industry in the stock market. You can gain perpetual equity in the Permian basin at 0.60% price to book with zero debt. Upstream, mid stream, downstream arbitrage opportunities abound. You will find that nowhere else. I also invest in RIETs- land and natural resources are the only real assets in existence. I watch this channel also and value his opinion .

@@SpeakerBuilder You're right, but energy and mining investments are not for the "faint-hearted". Some of my most successful (Glencore and Alpha Metallurgical Ressources) and some sub-par investments (VALE as an example) belong to this category. A more stable alternative are Royalties (Gold Sandstorm, Wheaton, ...), Farmöand REITs if you're afraid of hyperrinflation, Mexican and Canadian stocks if you buy into the "deglobalisation" aka "on-shoring" thesis (I like VOLARIS a mexican airline, but there's plenty of infrastructure (Mexico) and mining/energy (Canada), railway and trucking?), ...

Great video! For each and every category, everyone should research the tax consequences and filing requirements (k-1 taxes are a pain, most online tax preparers won't do them and they always come super late in March) whether it's better in a taxable or tax-sheltered account and whether more appropriate for a reg or Roth IRA. Secondly, many but not all of these tend to have declining share price. So if you want a steady or some growth, be ultra choosy. Or be ready to hold it for longer as it works through a cycle (if you like to sell gains and reinvest elsewhere) or hold long term.

I don't get why other people don't go for yield when young, just focus on growth. Say 100 stocks with a 9% yield means you can buy 9 new stocks with the dividend, that is your growth, not the "hope" that the company will be able to increase their dividend from 0,5% to 0,55%. Being from Europe i hate that we are not allowed to buy ETF's from United States, you got some real good ones i'd love to own myself.
