She died the summer right before my junior year of high school. I loved her music. I remember she died, and the next day my family left on a road trip and pretty much every radio station I turned to with my headphones was doing tributes.

I was 16 when this song was released and that was a dark year because 5 months after Aaliyah’s passing. In January of 02’, on the weekend of my sisters birthday. Her best friend died, the weekend before his birthday.. aaand it was their Senior year in High School. So this song has sooo many connections for us both. And now a new one. 🤦🏽‍♂️

Also, fun fact: This song was co-written by Ginuwine (with Teddy Bishop and Johnta Austin) who had already recorded it and intended on putting it on his 1999 album 100% Ginuwine. But while Aaliyah was in the studio, she asked Austin and Bishop to play her some of the tracks they’d done with other artists. And when she heard “Miss You”, which Ginuwine had already recorded vocals for, she called him up personally to ask if she could record and keep it for herself. The label didn’t allow her to put it on her last album, though.

Static Major (Who wrote a good chunk of Aaliyah’s hits, especially on her last album, as wall as from the R&B group Playa) is in the video in a red and black leather jacket as well. He passed in 2008.

I was born 1985, Now 35 soon be 36 on July 7th. I grew up listening and watching all the OGs and their video too. I was in the elementary when 2pac and biggie pass way. I was a freshman when Aaliyah pass way. My first born son was still baby when she pass way. Now DMX this is hard. I remember trying to trick my grandma to buy DMX there was X tape. She brought it for me. I kept it on repeat so she can listen to the prayer. Her friend switched to the next song. My grandma turn around to get her money back. I was on punishment for two months for lying to her.
