Yeah, one of my riding friends years ago said she'd heard that saying. But the way she heard it was Tell a gelding. Ask a stallion. Discuss it with a mare. Was thinking of that throughout the video, and wondered how many people would know about it in the comments.

What a gorgeous mare, so very drool worthy.....I see Blue roan that's sun bleached. With dogs sniffing the ground it's mentally trying to escape, trying to mentally check out. More like I'm going to ignore you and direct my mind to this ground instead of you...I suspect that was what this mare was doing. She tried it twice and realized you weren't falling for her inattention....Absolutely love watching you work horses...

I can totally relate to this mare. I am training a 4 yo mare that has been doing the same things. My girl (teenager) was a pampered girl that got away with many things, but not with me. If I didn't know any better, I would say that's my horse! I have been doing many of the same things as you, which has made a big difference in my mare's respecting and listening to me. When you are done training Kate, she will be one awesome horse! Thanks for harping on her to collect. I could see the changes in her by the end of the video.

Temperament can be an issue, that is for sure. I was once told by a QH breeder that a spayed mare has more strength and heart than a gelding. Breeding here also comes into play. Your training approach will work here! Being aware and reading her so well is key. Watching her grow up is gonna be fun!

Another really good lesson on a few points. She has a nice conformation, just needs to build her strength. Her trot was a little wavy from behind. Mentally, I love her attitude. Some interesting things in this video for me. A few things I have never heard before regarding behaviors. I have had both mares and geldings over the years , never had a preference as all were very easy to train . If I had heard you talk about the " teenage rebellion" at 4 years of age I would have been likely to blow it off --except I have been going through that with my 4 year old --a first in my life with horses. Can really make you appreciate the easy ones.

I've had a gelding for a year now...13-15 yo...but he loves to play in the field and for a long time now I've said he's a rebellious teen/pre-teen. Only this summer did I begin learning what you do and others in terms of reading him and working with him productively. It requires a huge shift in training/communicating for the human and that brings about huge improvement in the horse. Thank you!

Reminds me a lot of a little mare I'm working with right now. She will not settle on the bit no matter what bit I try. And she definitely wants to bite soon as I make any contact with my leg. Every girth seems to be wrong and every saddle. So I tried bareback and she still wanted to reach around to bite my foot. Same with bridleing but she's letting me touch her ears finally. She's been trained at some point but she was also abused and now she is very defensive and reactive when she feels threatened or pressured. Lounges great but when I get on she wants to pace out way to fast. She's gaited and thinks she has to go top speed. I can ride her with a bosal but I want to transition to a snaffel.
@thespiritualcounselor-beli8785

Stretching her head down was due to the change of lighting where the arena ends and cast shadows. Notice she does it at the same point nearly every time. Horses have poor depth perception and will often need to get a close perspective on changes of terrain or shadowing to know what they are wtepping on. Same reason they will paw at water or terrain changea. If he would have actually let her put her head down there a couple of times she would have stopped doing it. Her leg was cocked while fussing with the bit at the same time because he had just pulled her around and was about to step across but he stopped her. Thusscausing her to rest her foot like that. Some good stuff here, but also some things that are not quite as he said. As for geldings vs mares i will agree that people seem to prefer geldings over mares. In my experience, geldings seem to have more try bc they are pleasers. Both just come back to them understanding what you are asking and confusion. A gelding will give more try when they dont understand, where as a mare you have a discussion when they dont understand. There are pros and cons of both. In her trot I would say her right stifle is locking. Could change as she muscles up, though I have seen horses where it muscles but they just have a chronicly week stifle and it never goes away.

It isn't just Quarter Horses that go through this at around age 4. You may have known this mare since birth and found it to be a very amicable, cooperative horse. Then she hits 4 and you find you have 1000lb 13yr old kid on your hands. "I don't want to and you can't make me." As to color, on my screen she looks more grulla. She is still a very striking girl.

Agree 100% that animals, in human/animal interactions, do what they have learned is effective. So, I see all her head lowering etc, as being misinformed rather than lying. She's pragmatic - it's worked before. She's a great example of how people get attached to external behaviors rather than how the animal is thinking.l She got release for acting submissive but not being submissive. Smart animal. Beat she comes along fast with some clarity.

A trainer's responsibility is to guide a horse's training from beginnig to end so that each individual horse reaches their full potential. That growth requires the trainer to make daily decisions like a map taking the horse from one place to the desired goal. Not only when the horse first gets there but every day you have to decide if the thing the horse is doing that you don't want is training or pain related. If you are not capable of knowing that answer yourself, then you would have no business taking a horse for training.

All I'm saying is when you get a horse look in its mouth just like all people did when they had to use a horse as a tool. "don't look a gift horse in the mouth" adage comes form that basic premise. Horses that come form hobbiest or untrained horse people usually don't know what floating teeth is much less what effect it has on the way a horse will react to a bit. Your a great trainer. Teaching the customers ABCs can save them money and dissapointment. Yes you have a plan for the horse. What is the Plan to prepare the owner to keep their horse at the level you trained it to.@@timandersonhorsetraining

Difficult for me to understand saying she needs more rear, pushing off with rear. This is very detailed training obviously the previous trainer didn't know and you seem to do it in your sleep. I guess you are saying have her bend at the pole and hold her back enough to have her round her back some. It will be interesting to watch you work her rear. I am just not seeing it. I can see the final product, but don't understand what I am seeing. You clarified the use of neck reigning for me, but so difficult for me to see the shoulder lifting and rear pushing. Sigh.

That's a good question. She was sent because she was starting to push the owner around and get her was and the owner was getting into battles she wasn't winning. Basically if you saw in the beginning if the ground work when Kate was showing the learned actions I was talking about to get her way. I knew how to correctly read her actions which went a very long way in correcting the problem. I made another video of her today working cows, she has progressed a long way really quickly just from correctly reading her behavior.

Just one look at her frame and you can see that for a horse in work, she has a weak hind end. I have always thought a horse lowering its head was a sign of it either stretching the muscles along the spine, or relaxing after the workout (lunge). Considering some people advocate encouraging a horse to drop its head to relax and chill out; how do you go about distinguishing a horse you get in? If you are treating them as if they are trying to move or dominate you, yet they have been trained or encouraged to drop their head; how confused do they get? Do you have a list of these potential conflicts you ask the owners about in advance of getting a horse in? I wholeheartedly concur re the walking out to the horse, not visa versa.

It was very obvious that she wasn’t using her back end right. I hope she doesn’t have physical issues that make it painful for her. Also, when she lowered her head when she was standing next to you quietly, it looked like she just wanted to lower her head because she was getting relaxed with you. Are you sure she didn’t need rewArding for that instead of punishment?

Mares lower their head to get close when they press on physical boundaries, physical space is very important with horses, he has his own bubble in which he is comfortable her being in. Her reward (and it’s very different from humans concept of relief) is backing up and being out, out of that zone of pressure. Reward for effort, respect in rules

Hi Tim, with regards her put her head down, how do you tell that its because she is trying to heard you? And not being submissive Just trying to understand more. Thank you and i like watching your videos.

You have to look at the whole totality of the situation and her whole body, not just her head. Her head went down as soon as I started lunging her. A generally agreeable horse might do that but she wouldn't have been sent to me if she was generally agreeable. Also horses especially young horses are always going to challenge a new handler. With looking at the whole picture the answer to her intent is pretty obvious.

@@timandersonhorsetraining This was very interesting! I've followed the big name clinicians and take bits and pieces from them. Have always seen them doing the hind end disengagement, head down etc, but never seen anyone lunge your way with keeping the hind engaged through a turn/change of direction. Makes total sense with training for different disciplines! Along with the head down. But i'm curious about the head down when you went in to to pet her. To me this just seemed like relaxation, at least from what can be seen in the video, like a blow out or lick/chew. Are you just assuming with this type of mare that head down is going to be more of a "dominance" behavior or was she displaying something else?

@@funnyfarm72 if you watch this video I think it will help you better understand how the head down can mean different things in different situations especially how it relates to this horse. kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5SvqXmaqql0o6s

@@timandersonhorsetraining I was going to give a similar reply to another post. You have to look at the whole horse. Ears, tail, even facial expressions. It's similar to people thinking a dog is friendly because it's tail is wagging and can't figure out why they got bit.

Do you think the weakness in her hind end is due to training errors or conformation flaws? If it is due to conformation flaws, how will that impact your training? How can she be a cowhorse if she can't sit down on her hocks?

In her case she just needs to be taught to use her back end better, just like a person who slouches need to be taught to sit up straight.
