Dennis and Sue are desperate to sell their two-bedroom Thamesmead home so they can permanently reunite in the country…But, after a year on the market, few viewings, four agents, and two major price cuts, Sue’s already moved to Norfolk while Dennis is stuck in their unsellable home. Just nine miles from London, the couple’s end of terrace property features a conservatory and good-sized garden…But with its cluttered, cigarette-scented interiors, stained walls, and oversized furniture, the dark and gloomy home doesn’t stand a chance.
Enter real estate experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They vow to transform the home’s prospects. And while John whittles down the list of agents and improves communication with the homeowners, Sofie clears the air, and brightens the home with a feminine touch and a fresh coat of paint. Will their approach pay off with a sale?

Washing, cooking, ironing. Does he work? Why is he staying there alone? He could be packing boxes and sprucing the place up, instead of making it more messy. It'd would be better if he moved to Norfolk with his wife and left the property vacant, instead of creating more mess,, and smoke daily. This guy is clueless.

I've never smoked, but my Mom did (and it eventually killed her). When I moved out, I had to trash so much of my stuff. I couldn't get the smell out. I'm very sensitive to the odor. My MIL gave me a piano that she stripped and re-finished. It had been owned by a smoking couple before that. She had it for about 20 years before she gave it to me, and I had it for about 12 years. I still could smell the smoke. I don't think you ever can get rid of that smell. I'd never buy a smoker's house because of that. People have a right to smoke, though, even though I hate the smell and I think you're ruining your health. But smokers need to understand that the smell turns a lot of people off.

It’s really hard to get the nicotine smell out of a house. If you paint over it, it comes back in a couple weeks. Every surface has to be scrubbed with a special solution and the rag can’t be rinsed and reused. Lots of rags. Lots of labor. Lots of formula.

I'm embarrassed to say I smoked inside a house I rented for 12 years. I left there 10 years ago. I was allowed to smoke inside, it was a very old rundown building. I still smoke, but would never smoke inside again. I left the property when the owners decided it was time to renovate. Prior to leaving, I scrubbed the walls and ripped up the carpet for them at my expense. It was the least I could, and the owners were very nice about it and gave me a great reference. They completely renovated the place, but I think washing the walls thoroughly, prior to painting, and ripping up the carpet, made some difference to the smell.

I'm convinced there are two keys to using a conservatory / sunroom. If it's pretty close to the kitchen and set up for dining, it is more likely to get used. We built one right off our kitchen and we used it every evening for dinner for the better part of 3 seasons of the year. The other thing that made it appealing to use was serving dinner buffet style from the kitchen so people were just carrying their own plates and drinks to the table, not a bunch of serving bowls, etc. We no longer live in that house and it's the main thing I miss about it.

Wow! Incredible transformation, especially for just getting it ready to sell. Brightening up the conservatory, bedrooms and entryway really made it look fresh and clean. It would have been nice to see something welcoming in front and would have been really inexpensive - maybe a window box of flowers, large matching pots with tall plants flanking the front door, or even a wreath on the door and mat on the doorstep. That would have made a world of difference. That patch of grass wasn't helping the look either. Might as well have just put in bricks to make it more like a clean patio. Personally, I would have found a different place for the trash cans or at least put up some kind of partition to hide them.

Has John EVER interviewed anyone in a town that said it was a nasty place to live? I appreciate his work with the agent side of house selling, but I think talking to people about their town is useless because everyone always praises it.
@SomeoneBeginingWithI

They're probably selective in how they edit it. People might have been negative when asked but they wouldn't include those clips because the message they want is "this is a great area, the problem is with the house and letting agents". To be honest "Is this a nice community?" "There are community centres for children... And parks" sort of suggests there isn't much sense of community for adults, especially adults who don't have children.

Unfortunately MLS hasnt reached Europe yet, although there are talks about having something similar, but I've been hearing that for 4 years now and still no sign of it. Right now, sellers choose to have their properties listed with every single estate agent and its cousin, it is just so silly considering estate agencies tend to work together and share listings and clients.

@SomeoneBeginingWithI
@SomeoneBeginingWithI 3 жыл бұрын
This was filmed in 2008, so I don't know about then, but we did use a lock box while selling my late grandmother's house so they do exist now. I think lock boxes would seem risky if you had four agents and didn't have good relationships with them because if multiple people have the code to the lock box and somebody doesn't return the keys, you don't know who it was. I think realistically that's unlikely to happen but I can imagine someone in that situation choosing not to take the risk.

We're smothered. 4 agents practically means NO effort!! What having multiple agents means when the property sells, they have to split the commission four ways! No way!! Paint alone, w/o special cleaning + fire fighter strength deodorizer, those carpets still emit a smoke smell!

Showing your own house is a huge no-no! You are biased, your perception of the place is skewed and, even more like your personal possessions, you stand in the way of strangers seeing themselves living there. Just don't do it! That's what you pay the realtor/agent a ton of money to do. Make them do it; they know how to do it professionally.

Why do British houses all have solid doors closing off absolutely every room from every other room? I'm not talking about open plan. I just mean you walk into those houses & it's closed doors everywhere. In other countries I've been in you can see into the living room from the hall, no door or pocket doors that are never closed unless someone needs privacy. But it seems like everyone closes doors on every room they go into. I would feel trapped sitting in a living room with the door closed. I want to be able to see light from other rooms & feel the life of the house going on around me in other rooms. Bathrooms & bedrooms closed when in use, but I can't see any reason to close the door to every room you walk into. It's so pokey, like a rabbit warren of little cells.

To conserve heat. My daughter lives in New Zealand, and it’s the same way. They don’t have great heating systems (in NZ, it’s mostly heat pumps), so closing off rooms you are not using, to keep heat in the room you are using, is a thing
@SomeoneBeginingWithI
@SomeoneBeginingWithI 3 жыл бұрын
It's to conserve heat. In the summer we have doors open, but in the winter we keep them closed. Most houses will have some rooms that are colder and more draughty, so you keep the doors closed between those rooms and the rest of the house. Often the hallway is one of the cold rooms, so you keep the doors that lead off the hallway closed. It's really important to have the front door open into a space you can close off from the rest of the house. If it's cold and windy outside you don't want to someone coming in or out of the front door to instantly make your living area cold.

I like these shows but the Canadian series was better - Sophie Allsopp also presents but her offsider is a rather dishy 'man of all trades' - plus they spruce up the whole house not just 3 or 4 rooms. The UK series seems to ignore the bathroom/s and kitchen (the latter room often cited as being 'the most important room' - and, in this case, the master bedroom. Are we to believe that a) these rooms were spic and span and did not need attention (or fumigating) OR b) the reason the house did not sell after the sprucing (at least not in the first 4 weeks) is because these rooms are filthy, untidy and wreak of stale cigarettes?????🙄🙄🙄🙄
