I stopped playing guitar for about 20 years. Basically self taught as a teenager. Never could quite put all my puzzle pieces together. Year and a half ago I decided to regroup my kids are grown now and I want to focus time on playing music. Learning music. Again! After stumbling upon your KZbin channel. I;m A First Timer Ricky! Great Theory lesson ! Yes, It is Profound! Kinda like the Math, " Mandelbrot set "! I'm 65 and Started Playing guitar when I was 14....... In my 20's drifted away from guitar..... " Life " love Music too much.....started playing again in the 90's........ but Growing up In N.Y.C. I went to A Vocational High school and was playing and teaching Myself guitar at Home...... learning by Ear off Albums...... And Teaching myself the " BOOK OF 101 CHORDS"....... And Low and behold Chelsea H.S in my Junior year, started a Music Class..... and the Teacher was A Piano and Trumpet player Named Artie Blouh ........ Learning Theory from A Pro Opened up A new World! This Reminds Me of way back then !

Wow , watched this twice to understand it , then ended up copying your chart as a reference to hang on my music room wall , It hangs beside chord progression charts I put up , This is amazing , connecting the modes to the chords like this , with the focus on building simple melodies around the thirds of each chord gives me endless ideas that sound so good , Thank you so much , getting a copy of your book so I can follow along with other lessons , this lesson has changed my whole approach , Thanks again

This is a powerful and nicely condensed lesson. I've never seen a graph that shows so well how everything is related in one place like this. As far as a title for your next lesson book - I think it would be deceiving to call it "Stupidly Simple". I can tell from some of the comments, in the chat, that some people don't understand that you are not going to get everything in this great chart you just produced in one go. A person thinking this can be "simple" and looking for a quick path to success will be highly disappointed when they figure out that this takes work and you can't just jump into the middle of it. You did your best to explain that you can't go to a foreign country with their dictionary in hand and expect to have a useful conversation with the locals if you haven't learned the language. As someone who has made all of the mistakes (except for the ones I haven't tried yet) I'm pretty sure that the "I understand/I don't understand" comments are all relative to how much time and effort each individual has been putting into theory. The biggest reason people don't want to even try at this is because they don't have a plan/route to learning the various concepts and bite off chunks they can't digest. Eating an elephant takes one bite at a time but you probably should at least know where you're going to start and whether you're going to grind it, BBQ it, or stew it, and what parts you're going to toss. Hopefully this is taken as constructive. Long answer to your short question about naming your next book. Thanks again for what you are doing for us monkeys, :)

Learning from a knowledgeable and experienced teacher is worth its weight in gold, especially for beginners, imo (akin to a finding a shortcut on an otherwise long journey). Grasping the Nashville Numbering System wont necessarily make one a better player, but it certainly makes life easier--like looking at a map and actually being able to read it.

The G major scale shape used to demonstrate the suspensions was different to the scale shape previously written on the paper. Same 7 notes, but different shape used for playing. Don't let that throw you - it was still a G major scale.

Ricky, about a week and a half ago something lit up and I get everything you are saying. I have since learned the musical alphabet on the entire fretboard and even l Converted the notes to numbers from 1 to 7 for the scales cross the fret board to every 13th. I find it easier to memorize number patterns. love GFEDCBA! You are awesome man! I am consuming everything you put out and I have your book. You have changed my life!

Hi Ricky, This was challenging, however, I finally got it. The suspended 2 and 4 note pattern changes on certain chords in the Key. If I use the Root or I chord pattern over the IV chord it sounds awful. Using your scale formula chart and using the #4 note vs the 4 note over the IV chord sounded great. I was able to use this method over a V IV I Progression in G Major D C G to solo over Can't You See by Marshall Tucker Band and it sounded like I knew what I was doing. Thanks for a tough but rewarding lesson.

This lesson went over my head. Lmao. I FELT stupid E to the 9th. But maybe one day. I find the patterns of this stuff is what is helping me on the chord chart in each position, like how i learned each box of the pentatonic. So for now i will learn that and put the puzzle together later . What you did illustrate beautifully is the synonyms of the the modes. When someone is saying major I, how it also means like 5 other things. That was helpful. Eventually I will have the money to buy your book and future book. For now your lessons are gold. Can't wait for the PDFs also. Keep it up.

I loved it, and you are a great teacher...up to around 52 minutes where you just explained something in A I was with you 100%. But then you lost me when you grabbed the guitar and switched to G instead...Trying to keep up but I think this second half deserves it's own video. thank you for all this.

I have my moments like a lot of Hacks do, but a Bullshi**er is a Bullshi**er, and a fisherman can spot a Fisherman afar Attention Deficit and head injuries, it's challenging for me to grasp. Damn I just found your channels and this is absolutely brilliantly explained Ricky. You have a fantastic way of explaining things. So my understanding now is, once you have your chord pattern down (eg I IV vi V) you can then look up the equivalent mode (and then your triads for each of these chords can be use with the arrpegio notes in those modes) ? Eg chord I would be in IONIAN mode which would lead you to the triad formula. You would then use the 2 and the 4 (in this case natural notes because IONIAN has no #’s or b’s) as part of the melody ?

I believe that if everyone could play music we could speak without understanding a word. Music is a international language that everyone can understand. No matter what instrument, we don't even have to read or understand theory or reading just playing. But reading and knowing theory everything is international with that using notes or number like Key of E 1 45 everyone knows chords would be E, A B or use A key and use 1 ii iii 4 5 vi vii. Love your teaching method serious but light hearted and funny. Keep up being yourself, light hearted and funny.

This is another FANTASTIC lesson. The thing that scrambles my brain is this. Min Pentatonic form 1 is in the ii,iii, and vi and the Maj pentatonic form 1 shape is in the I,IV,V. 🥴example keyGmajor: we have Amin/pent shape 1 and Bmin pent shape 1 and Emin pent shape 1. Is it better to see this as extracting the Maj/Min Pentatonic scale degrees from the modal scale formula?💡is this a lightbulb moment ?😢🤦‍♂️🤯

Hi Rick, learning so much from your channel. Thank you. However, in this lesson when you were "banging out" the formula's and Cof3rds, it was going straight over my head. I had (still do) no idea where you were getting the flats, sharps from and how they were applying to the formula? Probably obvious to others, but i just couldn't follow. Also, as side note. This format doesn't work on my phone very well. The chat to the side takes up 1/3rd of the screen making your drawing super hard to read. Switched over to the PC, was a bit better. I sorta know all this stuff...at least enough of it, and it hasn't helped me solo any better. I know scales, I know chord theory, the Nashville number system...all I play is Ionian, major/minor pentatonic (in one position), and Byzantine. Idk arpeggios very much and so far what I know of them was stiffed cause it didn't change my playing significantly... People tellin' me to learn the locations of ALL the notes on the fret board and the interval relationships, licks, etc. I just can't play anything creative OR even borrowed. I'm not on Adderall anymore, and therefore nothing sticks like it used to. I wish I could make the connections that would make it possible, but I'm at the point that I'm truly startin' to believe that only some people ever develop this ability and others just don't...and they hopefully can just do rhythm really well *fingers crossed* or just always and forever feel like giving up. I shouldn't be so dismayed having been learning this stuff for over 20 years! I can't tell any difference in the modes...they all sound the same to me, and they all go straight to the tonic of the Ionian. They say music and math are similar, yeah cause they make sense when the teacher is talking about it, and none when the student is working on the assignment. -=:-(

Im going to have to watch this 100 times to get this. What is confusing is once you picked up the guitar you start talking about suspensions . You didnt use this wording on the chart we worked on for 45 min. Glad I bought the book. Perhaps this lesson right now is to far advanced. Ive been stuck on learning all the notes on the guitar. I feel I must know this before I move on.

@@rickysguitar You're right. Whatever my teacher said, though, that is what I took wholeheartedly. I didn't ask questions. I picked up everything when the timing happened as well. I didn't have KZbin, or ANY online resources. I had a teacher and a book. I never assumed I knew it all either at the time, which is how I perceived their question. Lookin' back, they probably had no clue about the 6th string root notes...after EADGBe that was the next thing I memorized. Which has been a small struggle now that I have elected to play a 7-string...my lower strings are throwin' me off from time to time, but gettin' more acquainted with 'em. I do appreciate your patience and gentleness with me, and thank you for the lesson that I'll be chewing on for a good while. Haha 🤗❤️🤗
