That car is super clean! You just can't find them in such nice shape these days, at least in the US. The 1997-mid 1999 V70Rs in automatic were actually 4-speed autos, which is why the gearing is so long... I used to have a 1996 850R sedan with the same transmission. In 1997-1998, you could actually get these cars with a 5-speed manual, in both AWD and FWD versions! In mid 1999, they upgraded the 4-speed to a 5-speed automatic for the V70Rs, as well as increasing the turbo size and boost. While you still don't have a semi-automatic mode with the 5-speed auto, the gearing is leagues better. I have a 2000 V70R AWD myself (last year of production for this generation) and it's been a fantastic car... so much quicker than the previous years, which I have all test drove when searching for a successor to my 850R. However, that being said, I love all of the '90s Volvo R models, especially the ones with cool colors like the saffron orange in this video :)

In Sweden, most of the V70 R models have been used as donors, and the engines end up in older 2/740's. The T5 has good potential! Some guy ripped a 2JZ out off his Supra and replaced it with a T5.

@sonicstep3 жыл бұрын
I agree about the mid range acceleration (traction from rest is piss poor anyway, unless it has L.S.D.). That is where my 850 excels. Unfortunately, it got me pulled over by the cops recently. Fortunately, the officer was reasonable and I didn't get a ticket (mine is a manual gearbox).

A manual, either in t5 or r form, is much better to drive than the auto for sure. They are also as rare as hens teeth so good luck with that! I understood that the auto r's also had a slightly smaller turbo too? I drive a 940 turbo Estate (165hp) with now 300k on the clock - so just about well run in. It doesn't rust, it doesn't fail, the boot swallows basically everything you throw at it, it's light and spacious inside, the kids love it, it's comfy, it's no slouch (0-60: 9.5s, Vmax 127 mph), it's still fairly eco (I average 26 - 29 mpg and I sure do push it a bit) . And best of all: It's still RWD! No 4x4 nonsense or nose-heavy understeer through a FWD. As an everyday car it really is hard to beat - even by brand new models.

Jay, I had a 98 T5 - drove it for 10 years, retired 2 car seats while rolling this delight. This car is a bit iconic, people really liked it, gave me a bit of individuality, which I really didn't expect, because it really wasn't that great a car. I could hear the tailgate rattling in your video, they sell a kit to fix that, it is a solid must do! Also, you didn't mention the torque steer, perhaps it is better in the AWD version, but it was murder in the T5. I enjoyed the video, but I think you are wrong about the audience. Younger people eat this stuff up, it would go fast here in the Northwest (USA).

Trouble with the AWD is the extra weight of the rear end set up which i think is lifted directly from the 900 series, and you can really feel it in accelleration and mpg. However all weather useability means its unstoppable in anything slippy. Its a trade off only you can decide. Plus the 5 speed auto box sounds like a good idea but is prone to expensive failure, ditto the transfer case. The default answer is say "find a 2WD T5", but those have all been bangered to death, so perversely there are more Rs around (like JayEmms recent vis on the 156 GTA, easier to find than a regular V6...)

Martin Sorensen you realise it was a big heavy barge and probably had some form of limiter
@1cmman5 жыл бұрын
@@Mr330d Yes heavy indeed, over 1700 kiloes from what I remember and yes maybe the topspeed was limited because it reached 200 rather quickly.
@Mr330d5 жыл бұрын
Martin Sorensen Sometimes manufacturer’s limit them because they aren’t getting enough cold air at speed I had a 1.6 tdi Leon 105bhp that had a limiter at 200kmh even after chiptuning it was there but it must have been for a good reason lol
@1cmman5 жыл бұрын
@@Mr330d I also have a 30 year old Corolla GSI as a hobby car and it too can do atleast 200. The guys that did the chip tuning on your Leon should have removed the limiter as well.:)
@Mr330d5 жыл бұрын
Martin Sorensen I was actually surprised that they didn’t remove it because it reached 200kmh a heck of a lot quicker but in Ireland 200kmhs is definitely plenty our speed limit is 112KMH

Get your hands on a Mitsubishi Legnum VR4 (if possible), lighter, more powerful and faster than the Volvo and oh so sexy!! The back seat folds down completely flat and a single mattress fits perfectly for some fun nights.

The volvo engine is so much better. Have you driven one?

Umm no.
@majortom11645 жыл бұрын
@@xsduprwd3937 When I owned my Legnum, I also had a Mondeo XR5 ( the same turbo 5, only 200cc bigger) the Legnum was smoother, more powerful by 20 kw, 40 more torque and 100 kg lighter. The legnum shit all over the mondeo in regards to performance and handling. The only way it was behind was the woeful turning circle and horrific fuel consumption.

Thanks for a great video. A question - is the underneath factory undersealed as it would be for the domestic market or being JDM did they not bother with underseal?

this is not a 1997, as the S/V/C cars didn't come out until 1998. in 1997 it was still 850.

05:38, soon - thanks to Sadiq Khan - it will not be possible to drive it inside the North/South circular road regions without paying additional tax; seven days per week. Then a requirement to pay again if travelling into central London.!
