Hi Gina I can relate to this topic as I have been riding off and on for 40 years. Ten years ago after many years of not riding I bought and then shortly sold my sixth bike. Not long after that my mom said she was glad that I did not have a bike anymore. She told me she always worried about me when I had all my bikes but did not want to tell me that in fear that I would give up riding because of her. Seven years went by and the urge hit me once again but this time I didn't tell her, so it's still my secret but sometimes I thinkI might just spill the beans .My situation is different from you but not in some ways .

My mother didn't want me to have a motorcycle when I was 18, and I'm now 66 and still riding. It's the best experience short of flying.

For me, flying was a let down over riding. It was great but riding is much more responsive and the forces considerably greater.

@@elgringoec Well, I've never actually been flying except in a passenger jet to Egypt and that was like being in a train with wings. I'm talking about raw flying such as in a microlight, glider or dive bombing in an old Spitfire. Something I want to try.

@@Apollo949 I'd say, give it a go! No point in regretting not trying something you want to and are capable of. There's nothing like the reaction forces of riding, though, whether whipping through the twisties or muscling a dirt bike through rough terrain. 😆☮️

I'm a grown man, 56 and bought a Honda Monkey:-) Glad I got something small because it's fun and you can make all sorts of mistakes and it's not a problem. Plus you can go on dirt trails where there are no cars. Did you finally get yourself a bike?

I realy admire your openness, I couln't; simply I don't trust internet. I am somewhat surprised about not telling all to either mother, family or friends. Once I was a child, never a parent, I was/am a free spirit, never had a strong connection to my family, even less to inlaws, slightly stronger to friends, none to governments/religion. I totally get what you’re talking about at the 7:27 point. For me, just taking the first step was the hardest. The only person I told I was buying my first motorcycle, a brand new 2012 Victory Kingpin, was the salesperson at the shop in central MD where I was stationed. I was 32 at the time and the purchase was a much-needed turning point in my life. I didn’t plan anything about it; it was a pure impulse buy and one of the best decisions I ever made for myself. Close to 10 years later, I just got re-assigned to a European location and bought my fourth motorcycle yesterday, a stalwart 1992 BMW K75, with the intention of cruising as many EU countries as I can before they send me back to CONUS. Keep up the good work and ride safe!

Being a motorcycle rider is something to be proud of. Starting this at 50 just shows you are now embracing your next stage in life rather than many who start to close in their sphere and avoid things new and challenging. Your true friends should be accepting if not supportive. You took a bold step, and you already know the reward. It just gets better with experience, and you will find many friends you haven't met along the way. You have many years of riding ahead of you. If you decide to move forward on the relationship front, try to find someone who rides. Couples who love riding have a great bond to share, and avoid the conflict of not sharing the same interest at vacation or retirement time. As far as telling your mother goes, I personally feel that hiding who you are to a family member is a slippery slope toward trouble. People who worry about something they can't control are wasting emotional energy. Offer to take her for a ride. She might surprise you. Florida- such a shame, all that sunshine and no curves or hills. Still, you get to feel the wind and the machine. Your next step can be to travel into the mountains when you feel comfortable to take trips. Best of luck as you learn.

Growing up in my home, motorcycle were verboten. I learned to ride on a friend's dirt bike in the sand pits at 15. My mother never knew. At 26 I bought my first street bike. Passed the test a month later and went to see my mother and little brother. She was not happy. Last year I helped my son get his motorcycle endorsement. That weekend I told my family at a gathering. Again, my mom was very unhappy. It's like taking off a bandaid. It has to be done. It's probably going to hurt a little. But the anticipation of it hurts 1000x worse. Just do it quickly and honestly. Don't drag it out.

Good luck with your mom. She will actually be proud of you. And impressed. Our parents have dreams aspirations that they may not have told us. My mom is no longer here and I know that once they are gone you will miss being able to share things in life with them. Glad you are including her in this part of your life. I'm a 52 yr old female and took the Harley riding academy a couple weeks ago and got my license. Been watching motoman on yt and trying to decide what my first bike will be. I was very confident and did well with head and eyes....definitely want all cornering to stick. Good luck.

The hardest for me was to tell my two adult daughters that I wanted to learn to ride a motorcycle at 50. They both said, “that’s cool”. And then asked me if I was having a midlife crisis. To which I said - I would be ok with that, means I live to 100! They have both since gone to MSF and want to ride with me. So that’s pretty cool for me to learn something new and get to do it with my daughters.

Geez I feel the pain. I moved from the PNW and have a house in Texas now and have my 90 year old mother staying with me to sharing the care of her with my sister. That lives nearby. When my mom saw my bike she was shocked and I got “ they are so dangerous “. I said “ Mom I have had cancer twice and I am still alive. Killing myself on the bike is not a worry for me “. She got it then.

I showed up at the house with a Motorsickle I had purchased with money I had earned over the summer working on a farm I was 13 years old. Yup I have been riding ever since. Great post! As far as secrets and fears are concerned, I suspect yours is relatively benign and not as rare as you might think. As a recovering corporate exec, and now retiring CEO, lots of eyeballs rolled when I rode into work one day on my shiny new 2020 Goldwing at 56! (I rode for 20 years 20 years ago before putting bikes up at the behest of those hiring me.) My explanation today is simple: I’m living proof you’re never too old to have a happy childhood! Good for you for doing the same while you still can and can likely appreciate it more thanks to experience and far greater wisdom! I look forward to hearing about your adventures in the future! 😋

As for being 50 and taking up riding a Motorcycle, I reckon your doing just fine. I have only been riding for around 3 years and I am 61. Your never too old and I am sure there are plenty of us in this age group who enjoy watching and even learning from others in riding a Motorcycle and the places you enjoy riding.

I am 35 and have been riding for over a year. I still haven't told most of my family. I just don't want to deal with all the worrying. I have debated showing up on my motorcycle on Thanksgiving this year as a way of letting everyone know. Not the best way, but it's pretty in-line with my personality they've come to expect.

With me it was just the opposite, my mother had known about my desire to reenter the world of motorcycling for many years , she would never have agreed with it prior to me turning into an older man but as I was approaching age 58 she figured that pushing 60 I was old enough to responsibly handle it, I mean one should be able to do at least some of the things that they have always wanted to do by that age, so my mother had gotten me a motorcycle for my 58th birthday a few years before her death , I mean I shall always be grateful to her for doing that for me because without her I would never had been able to experience this once again.

Love your channel. You come across as a very down to earth, honest, easy on the ears and easy on the eyes kinda girl. I'm 55 and been riding since I was 12. I've owned many motorcycles (sport bikes mostly) over the years. Love the sound of in line fours and love going fast. May I suggest you get an in line four or at perhaps try one just to get that buzz. Twins are ok but in line fours are on a whole new level. You don't have to zap and have your hair on fire but an occasional twist of the wrist will do the trick. But at the end of the day it's entirely up to you. Stay safe n happy riding. Just subscribed.

(Sorry, this is a long one.) I got my license last year, about 2 months into the pandemic before I turned 28. I signed up for the MSF course and told my parents about it 3 days before the course. They were not happy. "You're going to get killed. There's too many people on their phones." Anything and everything they could say, they did say. My mom was almost in tears. Ultimately, they knew that they couldn't stop me as I may be their son, but I'm also an adult. As the course went on, I told them about what I've been learning and how I've been doing on the course bike and they slowly started to understand that maybe I could do it. (I'm a very skinny guy at around 5'10'' and 115 lbs so I think one of their major concerns was me actually being able to handle 500 lbs between my chicken legs.) I passed the course, got my endorsement, and immediately started looking for a bike. I knew the turning point was when my mom was actually sharing some seller pages from FB Marketplace and Craigslist, as well as asking some of her old patrons from her bartending days for bike suggestions. Settled on a 2017 Honda Rebel 500 from a dealership, booked the Uhaul trailer to pick it up, and started up my 'brand new' bike right outside their house. My dad immediately runs out, sits in the saddle, and the next thing I knew he was around the block! (He used to ride dirty on his new Sportster back in '06.) After I get back from dropping off the trailer, my mom comes over to me and tells me all about how my dad said he was proud of me; how I took the proper steps, got some good gear, signed up for the course, got my license, found a good bike, and got it home safely. While it may not have come directly from my dad's mouth, it's a moment that I'll never forget. Now I'm trying to convince him to get that Spyder that he's been talking about ;)

I understand the Mom thing. My mom is a big worry wart. Luckily my parents are only 4 hours away so get to see them alot. Bless my mom that she asks alot about my bike and shares my excitement of riding all while worried that I am being safe. Love listening to your excitement of this hobby/sport. Well first of all this is the first time I have seen your channel and I would like to say good on you girl for taking up motorcycling, we need more women like you to ride motorcycles and to enjoy the thrill we all get riding on two wheels, yes motorcycles can be dangerous, but ride within your limits and ride safe and you will build up your confidence, and keep up the channel and I'm sure your mother will be fine if you show her that you are ridding safely. I got my first bike at at 58 & hid it from my Mom. She got eye cancer about the same time ( she's fine now). She had a fit when I finally told her. Finally when she asked, again, WHY, I said because you never know when you might get eye cancer & then you can't. She then at least understood. Sometimes she even asks about the bike. Good morning Gina!! I actually tried to write this last night, and POOF!! it disappeared... lol. I was tired so I hit the sack, and decided to try again this morning. I totally understand your situation of not telling your mom! My folks are 91 & 92 still living in WV. Mom still worries about me (I'm almost 68), it's kind of funny really, lol! So yeah, there are a lot of things that I don't tell them just because I don't want her to worry! They know I have a bike, but no idea how much I ride!! Here's one thing I haven't told them yet... I'm going up to Alaska in May for a couple of weeks to start clearing off some property up there, and I plan on making my big move in August!! Every time I go up there I get this: it's dark all the time, or light all the time or it's -60 all the time... all of which are wrong!!! My property is on the Kenai Peninsula, about 150 miles south of Anchorage. On the shortest day of the year, they had 5.75 hours of daylight. Their winters up there are very similar to their winters in northern WV. But you can't change the pre-conceived notions of some people! They don't have internet, never have and never will! I'd given them a couple of my old computers over the decades, but they just give them away. Remember back in the old dial-up days and AOL??? Well one time I was back there visiting and dad wouldn't let me connect my laptop to his phone line because he was afraid it would destroy his phone system!! LOL!!! So no, they don't know I have a KZbin channel, they don't even know what KZbin is... LOL!!! Ride Safe Gina!!

As I sand dowels for my new tent and watch your videos, I am truly enjoying you! My 82 year old Mom is why I moved back to Iowa from Montana. Being closer to care for her makes the emergency commute easier. My Mom hates that i ride! I bought a new helmet as a deal to get her to use her cane. For too many years i never rode a bike to visit her. Now as I am needed more i just get to her anyway I can. Gosh being 50 doesn't make us all that mature does it? Do not worry we do not judge you. Few can explain why we ride so all of our loved ones relax. Having full insurance for extended medical care is my Mom's demand. I prefer to educate the public that we are out there also. So look for bikes and know that we to have families and loved ones. Take care of yourself Beautiful Lady. Get that rain riding experience under your belt so the fear doesn't ruin your riding. Please? Bought my first Harley in June 2020 but due to COVID, a broken ankle and Hurricane Laura and Delta devastation, I just got my endorsement a couple of weeks ago. About a month ago my husband bought me a Harley Street 500 to keep at home (we live in a camper while our house is being rebuilt and I have no place to keep my Heritage Classic out of the elements so it’s being stored about 2 hours away) and I absolutely LOVE that smaller bike. Hopefully by the time we get everything rebuilt and move back into our house, I’ll be ready to move on up to my Heritage. I just now told my Daddy a few weeks ago. I felt like I did when I was a kid and had to tell him I made a bad grade😏 He took the news very well tho. The kicker to it all, I’m a 56 year old ER nurse and still Daddy’s Girl😍

ahh mothers, everywhere, in every culture, in every age bracket, worry. I got get on a motorcycle at 37 even though i had expressed the love for them since I was a teen, simply because I wanted to avoid the "but it's dangerous" talk. I only managed to get through my mom's worry (she still does worry but at least she knows there is no other way) when I had to commute to work on the daily changing 3 different transportation and I was at my bodily limit, so my reasoning was "I'll either have to drive a motorcycle or stop working and do nothing with my life" which is something that neither of us wanted for me. I did give her quite the scare with the crash, but after telling her how much worse things would have been if I wasn't wearing gear and that it was gear that saved me, she now trusts me and the gear, especially since I'm a very responsible careful rider, I don't do crazy things, and I don't speed up.

I fully get it. I started riding at 58. My father was, years before a motorcycle cop so he was okay with it. My mom, just told me, always, "be careful". One is blessed to be well into his sixties before losing his parents (both were WWII vets, btw) and I often am amazed at their courage in each other and their faith and support in their two sons. One thing they taught, its a good thing to be pushed beyond your comfort zone. Security stunts growth.

I've got my motorcycle license last year, at 30 years old. I wanted to do it for a long time and then the pandemic happened and had to wait, but I finally did it. I told my parents because somehow they are a big part of my decision-making, in the sense that they have the right to know. They are no strangers to the motorcycle world and while my dad was troubled by the idea but supported me, my mom was totally against it, but respected that it was my call. So what I did was to tell them, specially her, every little (big) thing that I was learning in school and step by step she was more supportive. Mind you, she was still worried, but she was more open minded. One weekend I took her with me and she met my instructors and saw me riding. At the end of the lesson when we were walking home, she told me that she saw my passion with different eyes and saw how happy I was on that rebel 500 and she loved it. One of the instructors told her that I was made for this and she told me that she felt proud at hearing that and seeing how happy I was riding. It's her job to worry as a mother, she will always worry, but she also trusts me and that is huge. Today she tells me every time she sees a motorcyclist and what gears he/she was wearing, whether she like his/her bike or not and things like that and it's kinda fun. Thing is, our moms will always worry, because it's in their nature, especially when it comes to their daughters. :) Keep riding!

Since my 20s I've been riding a motorbike and for 30 years my mom hasn't liked it and worries about me. She's now retired and in Australia ( I'm in New Zealand) and I kinda sorta told her I'm done with bikes and they are all sold now. I still have one and yes I ride it and I do feel guilty. Ginger; You did not lie to your mother. Just because you did not share this with here is not a lie. Are you a grown woman living your own life? Are you married? You have a life of your own now and there is no reason you have to answer to your mother or get her approval. I realize that may sound a bit rough, but I have learned a very long time ago that if I am going to look for my mothers approval in what I do with my life, life is going to suck. I very much enjoy seeing a middle aged woman riding motorcycle. As a middle aged man I love to see women around my age riding. It is very encouraging to know there are women around my age who enjoy the same passion for riding as I do.

Hey Gina, it's so cool that you ride! I know it can be hard to tell parents about street motorcycles. See as a teenager I had a few trail bikes that my parent signed and even paid for. My mom is the baby of 7 and had 6 brothers and 4 of them rode motorcycles 1 of them was an actual racer, she tagged along with them often until one of them got killed on a motorcycle. So when a got old enough to buy my hone I intent about it and my mom went crazy, final word was if I was getting a bike, make it with a luggage rack cause I would be out of a roof over my head. Next day I got home with a brand new 900 Z1 Kawasaki without a rack, not a word was ever spoken and I had 12 other motorcycles trough the years and race 2 of them. It's a disease and it's in your blood you just cant resist. Now in my 60s I still would ride but a broken back and neck 17 years ago put a stop to it, now its sports cars.

It is hard to tell your mom something like this as moms worry. It is awesome that you decided to start riding. I got my license when I was 41 and have had it just over 6 years. Gina you are absolutely right in your comment on buying and using the right bike that suits you and your own personal needs. The important thing is getting out there and riding. If in future you wish to upgrade, downgrade or move sideways in terms of which bike you own and ride is purely your choice and you shouldn’t let anyone influence your choice. Suggestions can be healthy and helpful but ride whatever you are comfortable with. I personally know people with awesome bikes but hardly use them, What’s the point in that. Keep riding, keep having fun and do as you please. That’s what freedom is all about X

Hello Gina and welcome to motorcycling. I absolutely love when young folks, women and otherwise anyone gets into the sport/hobby. It's an absolutely outstanding thing to engage in. I feel you on this one. first time I fell in love with motorcycles I was maybe 10. My parents were in the "Oh HELL NO!!" camp. So, long story short, I learned a lot about mechanics and built a hunk of junk minibike from old parts and a borrowed cement mixer engine. Well, when the police busted me for ripping up and down my street, completely illegal, my patents told the cops to keep my home made bike. fast forward 40 years, 4 years ago, I too was 50 and decided I wanted to ride. For me this was particularly questionable as I have a vision imparement. My entire family feels I should not be on a bike. Only my brother in law rides and he started just a year or so before me. So, I made a deal with everyone. I took the MSF. If the instructors told me that I wouldn't be a good candidate, I would give up the dream. Problem is, the opposite hapened. I was killing it on the MSF course. Instructors couldn't believe I had a vision impairement and that I hadn't been riding for years. So it took a lot of days for the wife to be OK with it. Didn't tell my 80 year old father for months. When I did, he took it well, but still is of the belief that everyone on a motorcycle crashes and has a horrible accident. Actually, my entire family believes motorcycle = accident. When I got my second bike, Harley Street Glide, they thought I'd lost it as this is a big heavy cruiser. Well, I'm still having a blast, kind of.... right now the wether here in Jersey sucks, snow, ice cold, dismal skies, but when spring hits, I'm back on 2 wheels. Best of luck and ride safe. Bob

My husband had some riding experience (30+ years ago), and I know a small part of him was apprehensive when I announced my intention to learn and buy a bike. 2 days later he took it for a ride, loved it so much he picked up one for himself! We've gone on some really nice rides together and I have made so much progress in a short time..
