This is a new record in stupidity!
Brian not so logic believes himself to be the world's greatest expert on navigation. Everything from astronomical navigation to satellite-based navigation.
In his last two videos, he thinks he proves that GPS cannot possibly work on a globe. Yes, you read that right. He claims that GPS only works on a flat earth.

If GPS is "ground based" as flerfs say it is (never detailing what 'ground based' means) then why do aircraft like airliners have the GPS antenna on TOP of the aircraft and not on the BOTTOM?

Strangely, when I put my GPS recorder on my West facing window sill, and run a program to draw the paths of all visible satellites, the East side of the plot is empty. It's almost as if something is blocking the signal ! I wonder what it could be? It must be huge.. about the size of a house maybe !! At the same time , my phone works perfectly... odd that.

I actually was met by the satellite dish argument by a flerf, and I wondered if I still remembered my maths, and low and behold I got the direction to geo stationary orbit correct. lat=your latitude All angles in radians cos(elevation) = sin(latitude)/sqrt(1+(re/rs)^2-2*(re/rs)cos(latitude)) re=earth radius rs=earth radius + geostationary orbit elevation above the equator. I got 28 degrees elevation at latitude 54.

Planes broadcast their position for any receivers in range to pick up, whether ground based or satellite. Some Low Earth Orbit satellites such as the Iridium NEXT fleet are fitted with such receivers. I have not heard of any GPS satellites carrying them but then they are a bit far out at over 20,000 miles up.

Funny how total stations (ground based measurements) will not match gps observations unless the gps coordinates are protected with the proper scale factor, which varies based on position on the globe.

Brian seems to believe that GPS calculate angles to determine the location. GPS use timing of signals between the known location of the GPS satellites and the receptor to find the location. Listen, Brian, when we ask «How wrong can you get ?», that's NOT a challenge.

Trilateration
@Kualinar
@Kualinar 19 күн бұрын
@@scott_meyer With the GPS, it's tetra, or more, lateration. Adding a fourth distance allows the determination of the elevation.
@TruthNerds
@TruthNerds 19 күн бұрын
@@Kualinar "Adding a fourth distance allows the determination of the elevation." That's not quite correct either. The (non-empty) intersection of two spheres, in general, is a circle, so "bilateration" would only tell you that you're anywhere on that circle. Add a third sphere and, in general, you get two points, which is a lot better but still ambiguous. Add a fourth sphere and you typically get a single point. The main reason to use as many satellites as possible is to reduce the error introduced by measuring inaccuracies though, e.g. due to signal reflections. Unless you're determining an initial fix (the GPS receiver just booted), you can probably disambiguate pretty reliably between the two possible points for trilateration, because these points are likely to be hundreds of km apart and you still know where you were last minute.

Brian seems to not even be able to spell! That diagram has angles marked implying triangulation. But GPS uses trilateration. The receiver uses the signals from 4 or more satellites to calculate the distance laterally to the satellites. Its position is then at the intersection of those lines.
