As someone who, as a teen, once forgot to close the gate (Well, I was one half of that particular partnerage of forgetfulness), I am to this date still remembering my grandfather getting the call from a neighbour then bolting out of the house to round up the herd because the cows were walking down the road. Yes. Always. ALWAYS close the gate.

I always try to keep in mind that the animals will 100% notice when something's different (some little detail like a suspiciously loose gate, or an unbolted bolt), because they are there 24 hours day, every day. They know exactly what everything is supposed to look like. So they will know the exact moment when they can do something devious and fun >:D

Best to say, 'leave it as you found it!' rather than always close it, because sometimes a gate is left open for a reason.

I really liked how one of the cows (a pretty brown one) was mooing a lot, and Graeme petted her and talked to her until she was calm. Must be really weird for a cow to have its feet all off the ground for that long all at once and might have shaken her up! She got some pets and a kind voice to reassure her. So sweet!

I’ve been a secretary, a travel agent an airline representative, a long distance operator, I’ve worked retail and in gas stations. I worked customer service. I settled in on a service dispatcher. I loved it. I was made for the juggling of many engineers and service requests and customers bi miss it so much. Illness took my career away. I love watching your videos. I grew up in small village in rural Lancashire right next door to a dairy farm, on more occasions that I can remember I woke up at silly time in the morning to our back garden being crowded with runaway cows where the gates had been left open on the farm. I liked it as they were like pets to 8yr old me, my parents not so much when all of their lawn and landscaping was ruined 😂

I would amend the "close the gate" to "always leave the gate in the position you found it." If someone is trying to bring in a group of cattle and they run into a closed gate they are expecting to be open, the cattle will be highly confused.

I actually like to see the routine trims. It reminds me that the yucky, painful looking hooves are not a typical thing. I am one of the city people watching these videos and am very surprised at how much I am learning. I never knew that there was this much work in having cows. I thought just let them out in the field and bring them in for milking, feeding with an occasional vet visit when injuries happen. So thank you Graham for your videos (even the routine ones) because they are all interesting. BTW love the area where you live, gorgeous place

My maternal family still have a dairy farm in Co Cork Ireland. When many migrated to the US around 1890-1900, they established a dairy farm in Oakland (CA), one of two in this part of the city. The farm was shuttered in the 1940s as war industry forced new demands on residents. All this is to say I very much appreciate your care of dairy farm bovine as it grants me a selfish connection to my family history. Thx and carry on.👍

Ohhh my young man that stone wall! We were mobile. My dad an engineer and forever being transferred to oversee building of roads and bridges. Each move meant a different house and I’m telling ya he found shake and so forth in each new place (Canadian Shield) and built a stone wall around the front of each one. He created flower bed enclosures and all. Thing is we moved every couple years so now rural Ontario Canada is dotted with ‘em. I miss my dad. Anyway your stonework ‘round your house triggered a fond memory. Love watching your videos!!

My goodness isn’t it so cool to realize that the same simple medications my mom used to treat my scrapes and scratches works today to help those cows. Iodine and aspirin are as great today as they were 60 plus years ago. My dog right now has a torn toenail that he cut so close to the quick it required a trip to the local Vet ER. If I had extra strength Ora Gel for tooth aches to numb the pain so I could clean it up and get some Wonder Dust ( a much cheaper alternative to expensive Quick Clot!) I would have saves $495.00!!! You can bet I am picking up multiple packages of it when I go shopping!! Always keep Ora Gel and Wonder Dust on hand for people and pets!!

Very true. You'd think rock would be cheaper than it is here, but it's so heavy and expensive to move, and it's got a higher demand as putting rocks in means there is less lawn to worry about watering and to don't have to mow it. Sometimes the rocks are structurally necessary as retaining walls as well, putting even more demand on the market.

I grew up on a large farm with a lot of cattle and hogs. They're constantly walking in their own manure, when they're in the corrals for the winter. In place where there's heavy snow and cold in the winters, cattle are corralled, fed hay, silage, and often corn. Those are all vegetable products. I'm sorry, I'm tired of all the flack about only grass fed. That's not an issue. We raised meat cattle. Hogs are allowed to wallow in mud and even their own manure because they can't sweat and would die of heat in a hot summer. Just a little FYI for those who don't really know what they are protesting. 😃😃👋👋💖💖

It would be an interesting story how a coffee shop entrepreneur became a Hoof Trimmer. I have no cattle but I do enjoy the education you provide. Thanks much!

Excellent description about when to use bandages and when not too. It actually applies to people too. Bandages are there to stop bleeding, but if it isn’t bleeding, the wound will benefit from air exposure

I do like how the cows don't look so skinny or filthy on this farm. For as long as I've watched these videos, I always pay attention to how skinny or clean the cows are, and this one looks really nice. You weren't kidding that these cows get phenomenal care.

Remember, dairy cows are always skinny, these are dual-purpose cows, dairy and meat, so they’ll carry more weight.

@@JudyHart1 I did not know this, but I still wonder why. Are they trying to achieve less fatty meat? Edit: Nvm, I get why. Their milk production makes them skinny because they focus on milk rather than fat stores.

I understand shifting all types of jobs. I’ve been a bread maker, jeweler, engraver, substitute teacher and a math, science and English teacher. Currently doing the best job I’m a stay at home mom. (Still miss teaching and jeweler those were the most fun).

Thank you for explaining the bandage situation. As a retired nurse I love learning about everything you do - as appalling as it is to someone, like me, who practiced sterile techniques, etc. I mean, you don’t even wash the hoof off before working on a wound! And you can imagine how appalled I was to see a wound just being sprayed with iodine and let the cow go on her way through the manure and everything else! You’ve been such a great teacher who has helped not just me but other folks eliminate our anxiety about the sterile techniques drilled into our brains. 😅. Of course, cows are cows and humans are human so we’ll keep our sterile techniques for the humans. 😂. Thanks again, Graeme. You rock!

As a veterinarian who has done foot trims (normally when the problem is so severe they have to come in), it honestly drives me up the wall as well. Honestly if hes going to be around the corium like he does digging out ulcers and fracture lines he really needs to scrub the feet first. But for routine stuff its fine (think about filing your nails, it does not need to be sterile). More than anything, Im worried about him aerosolizing all the cow poop and him inhaling it as he has zero respiratory protection. Cows have E.coli and other bacteria in the poo that might not be pathogenic to THEM but I dont want E. coli O157! I also want to make a slight correction, you WANT oxygen to help fight infection. The anarobic bacteria is the dangerous kind! But I agree that most cows will no need a bandage as the farmer cannot fesibly change it every day (there is a reason he comes with his big equipment after all). Cows have an amazing immune system and as long as they get the pressure off their feet and the infection doesnt go into the bone they will normally heal everything!

Very informative Graeme. I live in a flat in London, so I very rarely see any cows, but I really enjoy seeing your videos and learning so much from you. This was a particularly interesting post and I enjoy saying Perdunculated Coreum. 😂

Didn't know you used to run coffee shops, but the way you made your coffee, I 100% believe it. I used to work as a barista, and I loooved making the drinks...despite hating coffee HA. I miss it, but unfortunately I suffer from very severe anxiety disorders, and the job was very hard on my health. Now I get to watch your videos, and they help soothe me when I'm having a bad mental health/anxiety flare-up. Beautiful day to you ❤
