This is a tale of two vintage Iron head Sportsters that I spent the past 9 years rebuilding from when they were both barnyard finds, to the bikes that you see here today.
After spending my whole life riding small mini and trail bikes, on Father’s Day 9 years ago, we find this old Harley Davidson Ironhead Sportster made into a chopper, garaged for 30 years. My Dad said we should buy it, and build it, so we did, for $600.00! and it changed our life. Little did we know that this motorcycle would change our lives, when one bike turned into two, then three, now we have five cool motorcycles, 4 of them Harleys. I have learned how to fabricate, build frames, fenders, gas tanks, paint, and work with leather to make my own seats. But best of all, this has also turned into a family hobby, with my wife Roseann involved in the creative process and sourcing of very cool parts. My Father during most of this time had been excited to to be part of the process, and has been our strongest advocate. But until the last few years his health has been a challenge, and now can only participate from watching and being visually stimulated.
We bought this 1973 Harley Davidson Ironhead basket case motorcycle in 2013, in pieces. After working on it on and off for 7 years, today we find out after all of this time, lots of work, money spent, endless hours in the garage, and making it a father son project. The reason it took this long, was that I also built two other bikes during this time period, and was working a full time job. But as time went on, I finally got serious and made the leap to get this one project done. I really like the way it came out, as I was trying to build a Club style Harley from back in the day, when it was new in 1973. It’s bare bones, no blinkers, speedo, tach, horn, just a really cool bike with a lot of urban charm.
