I've always thought everyone in the hobby already knew about this as a tool. I have also often used a .3mm mechanical pencil to draw out a design before tracing it with a pen and then painting it out. It works great for a checkerboard pattern or something like flames or camouflage.

These pens are great! I use a 005 Micron pen to paint the dots of the eyes after blocking the whites of the eyes out with Citadel Pallid Wych flesh (an off white colour) works soo much easier than a brush! Sometimes I paint green or blue iris onto the eyes first with a Raphael 2/0 and finish with the micron pen for the pupil but that’s just depending on the scale of the model and what mood I’m in! I have used a larger version of these pens (05 I think?) to add runes to a yellow Viking shield before.. but like Emil says, DEFINITELY Leave these for a few hours to dry, then apply a layer of varnish. As when I added wash to the mini the pen smeared all over the shield and I had to start again. Be patient!! The results are worth it! 😁

Most important: do not shake that pen like Emil in the Video!! The pens are open behind the metal fitting and the ink can flow out there, this will cause trouble as it smears everywhere and the tip will not write anymore. My two cents. Microns are Divas

Emil, I use those from time to time on my minis like for small eyes... the only drawback I see is the tint is a bit reflective.. so from some angles it reflect and looks like is not painted... totally fixed when I apply matt sealer.. Diluting black paint with ink and some flow improver works well, it won't dry too fast that way, although you will have to put some of it on paper before bringing it to the mini to stop too much running of.

IMPORTANT! If you use them on Acrylic paint there is a chance for the pigments to clog the flow of ink and it will seem like your pen is broken. A good way to fix this is with all purpose stamp cleaner. It will unclog the tip and lets the ink flow again.

Emil would it be too much trouble to ask for a vid about detailing up dark painted areas? Like paneling a black mini or something. Everyone has suggestions but I would like a more professional opinion.
@Ben-fk9ey3 жыл бұрын
Some advice would be that in nature and the clothes we wear it's rare for something to be 100% black. So mixing in and having a hint of brown/purple/blue or whatever helps. As for paneling a black mini maybe think the opposite way around in that instead of shading in recesses make the bits that would catch the light lighter or glossy? That way the black recesses would automatically look darker?

The other Big tip to easy tiny details would be using Prisma-Color Pencils to edge highlight after applying a matte varnish. Adding the matte Varnish adds enough Tooth to the surface for the Prisma-colors to stick really well, easy edge highlighting for fast bigger armies or for the individual who struggles with fine line work in general. Just apply another layer of Clear coat to lock it in or it will rub off.

@@tychoMX It may happen, but it's easier to fix then a brush. My main art stile is drawing with pencils, pens, and inks, and I am way more skilled with these tools then a brush. Choosing a liner for the pupils was my first thought after fucking up my first attempts at painting eyes, especially the ones inside helmets.
@tychoMX3 жыл бұрын
@@Astronometric Thanks for the feedback. I'm pretty useless with pen, pencil, or anything in 2D - made do hundreds of sheets of calligraphy as a kid, still can't write legibly now.
