All of their Evolution medleys are simply incredible. This one is probably my favorite because I was born in the 60s and grew up in the 70s, and Michael Jackson was a VERY big part of my youth.

Daft Punk - Pentatonix had booked professional studio time to record this song AND shoot the video. The studio booking fell thru at the last minute, so they decided to record the song in a bedroom closet and shoot the video in Avi & Kevin's kitchen using an iPad. The total shooting budget was $400...although that didn't include post-production and editing costs. Kevin had to wear the goggles because he couldn't wear the contacts. The single became their first international hit, the video went super-viral, and they won their first Grammy. As a result, Sony promoted them from the small Madison Gate label all the way up to RCA.

MJ is one of the large number of music artist that couldn't read/write music so instead he would beatbox the song then layer in each different element till he had a tape of the song he could play for the session artists so they could reproduce it along with get it into a written format. Just think of how many songs he created over the years and the fact that those tapes still exist mean they can still extract his voice from songs that never got released yet. It came up in a court case where someone was trying to say he stole the song Dangerous from her yet the only evidence she had was a recording after the song was released and it was a song he had worked on over a few years with the tapes to prove it. You can find audio of him singing in the court room as he covered how he creates a song.

New sub here! Honestly, you are going to get a TON of recs (and a ton of subs) but to be truthful, you really can't go wrong with anything from these guys. Every song they do has a different thing to awe you with. It really all depends where you want to go first. Their early stuff? Latest? Original or cover? Upbeat and heavy on percussion, or simple yet stunning harmonies? For older upbeat stuff, Daft Punk medley or Can't Hold Us, and Love Again for an original. Run To You is a beautiful Original, too, and is more harmonies heavy, and their cover of Imagine is arguably the best example of their 'Wall of sound', simply stunning. Later stuff for upbeat... their Blinding Lights cover, their 90's Dance Medley, and for an original try Coffee in Bed (there's a live one for that you could look at). And for something a little whimsical, Come Along is fantastic. Of course, there are offshoots of PTX too. Solo stuff, Scott and Mitch's 'Superfruit'... not to mention their extensive list of Christmas stuff. Honestly, most fans are not ashamed to admit to listening to PTX's Christmas stuff all year long. They're insanely good. It's a deep rabbit hole you're delving into, and I look forward to watching you discovering all the gems!

Great reaction! And not a bad singing voice either! Nice addition! I would recommend their covers of “no” and “gold” and make sure you know the originals first because they made it absolutely killer. Also (can’t remember if you have done this one yet) “can’t hold us” is amazing. I am trying to suggest a variety of styles because, in my opinion, they can literally sing any style/genre flawlessly.

You should check out the live performance of Ah Ha specifically the one at the Starvista stadium. It really shows the range of Mitch (he is the one with the crazy high range). Also note Kevin (the beatboxes) is there but the recording is on a phone and they never show show him in the recording. I love seeing a new Pentaholic be born!! All of their Christmas stuff is amazing as well!

Loved your addition to the end! A capella music has become my go to form of music. I find it almost irritating to hear "real" instruments sometimes. Somehow the beatboxing sounds fuller than the real thing. Home Free just released Working For A Living today. Originally done by Huey Lewis and the News back in '82 I believe. Pentatonix is a wonderful and talented group, but not my favorite . Maybe it’s the pop music but they sound like an episode of Glee to me…without the auto tune…nothing wrong with that, just not my preference. Acapella is not my immediate “go to” for that reason with the exception of Home Free. Maybe it’s because country has a long history of harmonizing but they sound like a great country band that you hear on the radio rather than a TV show. That’s not to take away from the talent of other acapella groups, They are all ridiculously talented! Thanks for another great reaction!👍👏🤗

That's funny, even Adam Rupp said PTX was radio-worthy where Home Free would never be considered so because they couldn't reproduce the steel guitars and country industry instruments the way PTX can for pop/R&B. You said it wasn't meant to be insulting, but it kind of really is because calling them Glee - glorified karaoke - completely ignores Kevin's entire contribution, let alone the things the others do to fill out their sound or the entire reason they have two of their three Grammys - their ability to create mind-boggling arrangements. Themselves. It's just icing that their third Grammy is Best Country Group or Duo. Maybe just say you prefer country as a genre... I certainly am no Home Free fan for the opposite reason. That doesn't make Home Free karaoke, though.

@@perfectkismet Laura doesn't prefer pop music start with that. I don't necessarily either however I have been following acappella for years. Getting on the radio has always been a thing but you really should remember that Pentatonix has been doing that since early on with their Christmas carols. Little Drummer Boy knocked Mariah Carey out of first place on the billboard charts. No guitar sounds needed. I prefer folk and country of the singer-songwriter variety so I followed Avi Kaplan when he left and went to writing original compositions in that genre. He's pretty acoustic but the acappella is gone unless you count how he involves his audiences in singing with him. (Hearing a whole audience do "Change On the Rise" is pretty powerful.) People are different in their musical tastes. Some prefer the more musical theater that Voiceplay and now Pentatonix has gone to since Avi left. It's not my thing. Nor is Christian music. My point is people will disagree and that is perfectly fine. I thought the same thing about Pentatonix and Glee with the way they now definitely wear costumes for their performances not street clothes.

Nice review but is it possible for you to not sing along with the video? This was actually the first time I've heard this live performance...just wanted to hear them sing. Other than that, I enjoy your passion for what you're listening to
