I think that firing the Artistic Director is the smallest thing they should have done. Thank you for this, thank you for being one of very few with a backbone. I used to work with teenage girls and young adults who had been used and abused as children and it changes you. The things these girls went through is so horrible that I don’t think people would believe it if you would talk about it. We worked with the police sometimes and the scenes they walked into make law and order SVU look like a kids show. I didn’t have what it takes and quit after about a year because I couldn’t leave the work behind at the end of the day. Child abuse and child p isn’t edgy.

Haute le Mode has rubbed me the wrong way lately before this short even came out. He would do celebrity closet reviews and make all these comments about fast fashion but have no problem pointing out and talking about their Balenciaga bags. I totally understand the problems behind fast fashion, but he also has no idea how long someone has had something, or how they obtained that item. He has even made comments about celebrities wearing Dolce and Gabbana and purposely keeps the commentary short (again I get it) but it just felt weird that he never says anything about covering Balenciaga. It felt a bit like virtue signaling to me and it came off as not a priority to him. Im honestly not surprised about the video. I may not be a mother but I was a victim at 14 by a man in his late 40s. Thank you for using the term ‘mother energy’ rather than ‘mothers’. It’s inclusive. There are many women who are childfree-not-by-choice who sometimes feel overwhelmed by how ‘pro-natal’ society can be. Our energy gets channeled into our pets, our nephews and nieces, our friends kids or good causes. You can look out for the rights of your fellow women and the vulnerable without being a mum/mom. Thank you for talking about this. This discussion has brought up old wounds/ pain from my experiences. As someone who survived SA and abuse, and was never believed by ANYONE (workplace, friends and family, etc.), even when it happened in front of them or there was evidence (some of them destroyed or hid the evidence), the most painful part is their gaslighting, siding with the perp, making fun/ jeering and (victim) shaming me. I know it's not all men (gays and straight), but I've experienced too much damage to ever trust them again. You talking about this reminds me that there are good people out there who will support the victim and justice. Added note: I take comfort in the fact that there are those out there who are supported and defended. I've accepted the fact that I'll never get justice for what they (and the people that sided with them) did to me. I've cut out everyone I know out of my life and am in no contact with my family. It belongs to everyone.” When I read this, it sent shivers down my spine as it sounds like an excuse and explanation for the Balanciaga add campaign to me. We, the people, obviously don't get that “beding rules, breaking conventions” and “pushing back doubt” will eventually “pull us forward”. This is very, very dangerous! Balenciaga did just that … testing where the limits are, provoking for the sake of provoking, creating fashion shows that deliberately shocked people in order to be talked about. You can argue that this is “self-expression” and “blazes through boundaries”. However, do we want to normalise the sexualised depiction of children? I am all for creative freedom, but there are boundaries of taste and human decency. Instead of taking several seats (as you’d put it) after the backlash, we are told that we just don’t get the creative vision … and if we decide to be offended, it is our narrow mind that just doesn’t get it. To me the add campaign was a calculated risk to test the customers and the fashion world: how far can we go? They seem to be careful now, putting the emphasis on “family” and “friends”. And yes: this will eventually be forgotten. Thanks for reminding us!

Why do you think someone as well respected as say fashion journalist Cathy horyn was walking in that show? What decision is it that they’ve come to in their lives or work that they’ve decided Balenciaga has made penance and it’s time to take the beans seriously again. There were other prominent editor and fashion people walking in that show as well. Was it Balenciaga trying to say “look, these people have forgiven us, you should too”. Same with dolce and Gabanna. How are they in vogue again? It’s an interesting dilemma.
