I did that long commute to my nursing school and am a male RN just like you. I was also broke while going to school, but I knew it was gonna be worth it in the end. My dream is to one day become a nurse anesthetist. One day I will get there. Keep going and chase your dream...and always remember the sleepless nights you put in and the long drive you had to do.. never give up. Never ever.

Hey man. There is no such thing as just an ADN. ADNs are registered nurses just like quote BSNs. BSNs get extra classes in shit like English and sociology and community health…..they are not prepared more for bedside nursing anymore than the ADN…. In all actuality the ADN new grad probably has gotten more hours of clinical training

As a new grad here in South Florida I feel you! I was lucky enough to get hired straight into ICU, so I'm making a few dollars more. There are hospitals down here that make you do residency programs that only pay $15/hr for the first three months!!! Anyways, glad I found your page. Very good content and nice to see from a black males perspective!

Lol yea I think your talking about the StaRN program with the hca hospitals. I say go for it because one you get that training in icu you value immediately goes up as a nurse. You can pretty much work anywhere as well because all the hospital will have to do minimal training and orientation for you to adapt to their unit.

My goodness, American schooling prices always shock the hell out of me, I find it soooo insane how much you guys pay for school 🤦🏽‍♀️. Here in Canada, we do have more “expensive” schools but the average for a bachelors in science of nursing is 12-15,000$ for the full 4 years and you start at around 30$ an hour as a bsn. I’ve heard of Lpn’s in the states paying thousands for school and starting at around 18$/hour but I paid 800$ (books and uniforms included)for my 2 year lpn program here in Canada and started at 23.50$/hour

I was born and raised in Cali. I see sooooo many people say that nurses here make more money but it basically doesn’t matter because of the cost of living - CALIFORNIA IS A HUGE STATE. The cost of living is predominately high in LOS ANGELES. There are other areas of California where the cost of living is affordable, but it’s still California so they make the same money as someone in LA.

It’s called buy a SUV, convert the back into a bed, and your set! To spend ~$3k/month to watch TV and sleep is not worth it in my eyes! You can do that on your IPhone Max plus in your car! Get a gym membership, shower there. Also, don’t settle working for just one hospital. GIG yourself, and work for multiple hospitals. Bank will be rolling!

This is why I chose the long route to get my RN degree instead of going to these fast paced programs. So many students come out of those programs $70k-$100k in debt! I’ll be maybe $35k in debt by the time I’m done. Longer strategy, but worth it in the long run.

I wanted to make FL home base but travel nurse after a year or so. Whats my best route to getting ICU experience and not being locked in for 2-3 years? Couldn't catch if you said 8k or 80k student loans, but keep your head up. (If it's 80k, did you go to West Coast University?) Paying down that debt will go by quick. And you should get a differential for having your bachelor's degree over an associate's degree in nursing. That's how it is here in CA. When I started as a new grad nurse with an ADN 10 years ago, I started at $28/hr and now is at $53/hr with our annual 2 % raises we get at my facility which is a government hospital. You just gotta get your 1 yr experience and get to a higher paying hospital. Do you have Kaiser out there in FL? The nurses here in CA who works at Kaiser are starting $50/hr. Good luck, Jeff.

Just curious... Why not go to a community college for less than 10k? Is it the feeling of prestige by going to a well known private university, or is there a stigma on community colleges where you live? My sister and 2 friends went to nursing school (ADN) and then got a job after just 2 years. Signing an agreement to work in rural healthcare for 3 years, they ended up having their tuition paid for by the hospital (future employer). I'll be honest, I hear so many people talk about so much school debt from private and well k own school. I just personally don't think it's worth it. As ADN level RNs, all 3 are in varied specialities (OB, Palliative, and Oncology).

@JeffFallout
@JeffFallout 4 жыл бұрын
Personally I think the bsn route is better because you knock everything out at one time and if you know you want to go to grad school asap then having the bsn will help you realize those goals alot faster. On the associate degree side its generally cheaper and at the end of the day the associates get paid the same usually. The issue with the associates degree for me is just having to do the bachelors courses while working. To me its just an added stress to an already stressful job that generally has no financial benefit unless you want to go to school. So for me its just better to get it out of the way early. But either route gets you to the same goal. Lol hopefully that made sense 😅

ADN nurse here. Just wanted to give you a different perspective. I wholeheartedly recommend the ADN first then BSN later, UNLESS you have a full ride or scholarship that pays for almost everything. It took me 18 months to do the ADN nursing program and had $0 In debt because my program only cost $10k total. I was able to pay for it while working part-time through school. Now I'm a nurse and my hospital pays up to $5k a year for me to go to school (which covers my whole tuition). I'm doing the RN-BSN program at the same community college that I got my ADN. the whole BSN portion costs $8k in total and is only 12 months long (not counting prereq classes). The RN-BSN classes are meant for full-time working RNs, so it's very manageable. It's entirely online and pretty easy. I'll be done soon and will have $0 in debt. I think that's totally worth not having the "traditional" BSN experience or to knock all the classes out at once. Personally I wouldn't want $80k in debt (I know not all BSNs cost that much though). There are pros and cons to each option, and it depends what your personal situation is. Good luck!

@@YouKnowYouuLoveMe This is what I'm planning on doing...I already have a Bachelor's degree in something else but all the necessary pre-reqs because I was also on a pre-med track in university. I'm gonna do the ADN at a local community college where it won't cost me my soul and then once I'm done and employed with that I will try to do my BSN as soon as I can to get that out of the way. From there I will see what I do if I continue with nursing (become a NP) or try to go to med school after working for a few years as a nurse.

@@j4lyphe1 yeah I already had my AA degree so I didnt need any additional prereqs before starting the RN-BSN bridge program so I started it 6 weeks after graduating from my ADN program. For my school the RN-BSN bridge is only 12 months. I always tell people don't pay more than $20-30k for an undergrad nursing degree. $30k is the high end that I would cap it at for a BSN honestly. And try to get someone else to pay for part of it, most hospitals will. All you have to do is fund the ADN and you're set. Nursing just doesnt pay enough to pay all that back and still live comfortable and accomplish your other financial goals. At least not in south Florida where I am.

Don't think the issue is him being in FL, but rather his decision to go for a BSN at a private university. If an RN doesn't want to into teaching or administration/management, or become an NP, then a BSN isn't really necessary, in my opinion. My opinion is based on the experiences of several of my friends and family who are nurses. All got their ADN from community colleges for less than 10k. A few got their BSN and their employer paid for it.

American colleges take students as long as they have the minimum grades and test scores. Anyone can go. As the saying goes, if there is a will, there's a way. Euro schools that have 'free' schools are selective. Also, living in countries like Sweden, income is taxed nearly 50%! So, think about it...is school really free? The grass isn't always greener on the other side. Paying the high taxes isn't a guarantee to get into college. I'm sorry your debt is so high. I went to a community college and it was less than 10k. My job options were the same as those who went to universities. I think they should advise high school students more on options for school that don't cost as much or will be paid for by the employer. I know several RNs who paid nothing for their school, because they signed an agreement to work for a certain employer for 3 years. Not only did they know they had a job at graduation, but they had no stress over school debt.
