@@gailmurphypike5538 Bless you. My husband too. I was not in his life when he served and when he came home (severely damaged psychologically and physically). So I can’t imagine what that’s like. I’ve only been here in the last 9 years as his caregiver. He had a heart attack last year and it kinda scared him straight. He’s lost weight, takes his medicine, etc (diebetes too - had his toe amputated last year). I am so proud of him serving yet so possed at the powers that be that fund both sides and have no skin in the game.

I was 10, when my 18 yr old brother got drafted. He was able to come back alive! However, He was never the same! He had a heart of gold. But what he saw, mentally screwed him up. He became an alcoholic until he passed away in 2018! God Bless all the young men who had to go to a war that was never going to be won!

Once I heard that some group of individuals (I can't remember if political party, political action group, etc) that was very against war in general were heavily in favor of the draft. At first that seemed strange to me but then it was explained that they believed that a draft meant that a greater number of citizens could be brought into a war and they would therefore vote to avoid conflict when possible. That seemed sensible. A draft or mandatory conscription can actually cause a nation to engage in fewer wars. More skin in the game as you said.

This song embodies the anger at the Vietman draft. My cousin went in as one person. He came back unrecognizable. Died of an overdose 5 years later. But rich guys all got out of it. For those of us who stared down the existential barrel of the draft and the prospect of killing or being killed thousands of miles from home in a war we didn't understand or if we did, we opposed, CCR has captured our anger perfectly. CCR's "Run though the Jungle "or "Have you ever seen the Rain?" are two other anti-war songs. Recommendations for more anti-Vietnam War songs: Black Sabbath's "War Pigs", Rolling Stone's "Gimme Shelter," and Cream's "White Room." Remember and pray for our veterans and MIAs. My daddy was there when I was born in "69", he got to meet me for a few hours a couple times but always had to go right back. I saw him a few times after that but military was his life until I was 8 or so and then he wasn't in a place to get to know me. I turned out to be a daddy's girl by nature and even though it made it hard and sad for me, I loved him and therefore the military more then anything else and was so proud of the years spent and awards collected by my father. He started calling me late at night in my forties (and yes drunk because the memories were hard to chase off} and for the first time told me of how much he loved me and was sorry for not being there, but he passed before we could get to know each other or for me to tell him that I wasn't angry with him. I already knew that he loved me because I felt it without seeing or talking to him and knew that his love for this country was so great that he felt it a personal obligation to protect it for me and everybody's brat (army brat). He was a man torn, but a good man. Sry so long, this kinda crap gets to me. lol

Back then, a boy's draft number was everything. When I was a freshman in high school, a TV was rolled into the cafeteria so the students could watch the numbers being called in real time. I remember a few senior boys running and pounding walls because of their numbers.

John Fogerty, on Fortunate Son. "It's the old saying about rich men making war and poor men having to fight them." The thoughts behind this song - it was a lot of anger. So it was the Vietnam War going on... Now I was drafted and they're making me fight, and no one has actually defined why. So this was all boiling inside of me and I sat down on the edge of my bed and out came "It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son!" You know, it took about 20 minutes to write the song. "Fortunate Son" wasn't really inspired by any one event. Julie Nixon was dating David Eisenhower. You'd hear about the son of this senator or that congressman who was given a deferment from the military or a choice position in the military. They seemed privileged and whether they liked it or not, these people were symbolic in the sense that they weren't being touched by what their parents were doing. They weren't being affected like the rest of us.

A college roomate of mine was named Al, but nobody ever called him that. We all called him "happy", or "hap" for short, because that is just what he was - happy. All the time, smiling, joking, having fun. loving life. After graduation he married his long time sweetheart. Then he got drafted. They made him a helicopter pilot. His first mission was an ambush, and now his name is on the long black wall in D.C. along with 50,000 others.

I graduated high school in 1968 from a largely HIspanic-populated school. The draft was on, so most of the boys from my class were inducted immediately and sent off to Vietnam. It was a war fought by many low-income teenagers, sent to a foreign country for no other reason than American prestige. We lost, big time, and those kids are now retired, homeless and many with PTSD and poisoned by the tactical herbicides used by the Army. Agent Orange, the most well-known, caused permanent damage to many troops, as well as ongoing birth defects and neurological damage to the Vietnamese people to this day. It was a stupid, useless war. The song reflects much of the attitude of those who fought, and those who watched it happen.

My uncle spent most of his adult life fighting the government for disability payments due to his time in Vietnam. I remember his ankles would swell and crack open and bleed constantly. I can only imagine the pain he went through in life. At 62 he finally got his disability approved and died 3 years later. It's a shame really.

My brother in law was drafted a few months after graduating high school. My sister and he secretly married just before he left for Nam and she began planning a formal wedding to take place on his first leave. Two weeks out of training he was in the jungle overseas and caught a deadly sniper's bullet ? My sister was destroyed along with him. She carried unresolved grief for the rest of her shortened life. Devastating results for thousands of families as a result of that conflict.

He went to Vietnam as a civil medic worker, coordinating and setting up hospitals as US was taking over from the French. Was absolutely horrified by what French troops were telling him. He freaking hated it for all incoming soldiers and especially minorities. He was warned by French troops to get the hell out of Vietnam. He called my mother long distance and ORDERED HER TO TELL MY OLDER BROTHER to get out of the Air Force, as he would otherwise die in Vietnam. I was a Navy medic in Vietnam. My parents were poor. No money for college that would have kept me home. Navy medics were assigned to the Marines.I was lucky. I came home in one piece. Messed up mentally for awhile. A wonderful woman saved me from me killing myself with drugs and booze

This song reminds me of my late husband when I was married for 13 years to a man who proudly served in The Marine Corps and The Army and was sent overseas numerous times and had close death encounters but always came back to his family. But sadly his life ended 2 years ago from cancer but he got the Marine Corps funeral he wanted. I'll always remember him as a war hero.

Lots of emotion watching this video.. my big brother went to Viet Nam when he left it was one of the saddest days of my mom and my life… I thank the Lord he came back alive and is still alive today.. but too many gave their lives

486, 000, and not all that came back came all the way back. That war lasted 10yrs but for most who came back it lasted (lasts) a lot longer. What your generation calls PTSD today is a slap in the face to what these men felt (feel) today, for most they never came back. God bless and have mercy upon their souls.

My Uncle was s Gunner in a Hue chopper in Vietnam. Shot down on 3 different occasions and shrapnel in his legs to this day. I respect this man for everything he has done!

It's hard for people who weren't there, but the massive hatred for the Viet Nam "Conflict" was huge and real. There was this slide of war from WWII, Korea and Viet Nam as if there were no years of real freedom from war. The war in Ukraine right now is another terrible, terrible thing and so much of the world is part of it and the hope that it doesn't spread to more places.
